Course Description

Do you want to enter the field of Bioinformatics, but don't know enough about DNA, RNA, and Genetics?

Are you curious about the recent advances in DNA sequencing technology, and how it can be applied to Personalized Cancer Therapy and Disease Research?

Do you want to use Bioinformatics tools to analyze data generated by Next Generation Sequencing?

By the end of this course:

  • You will have a strong foundation in DNA, RNA, and Genetics

  • You will have a thorough understanding of Next Generation DNA Sequencing Analysis

  • You will use a cloud-based platform called Galaxy for the analysis of large datasets

  • You will assess the quality of raw data

  • You will use FastQC and Trimmomatic to improve data quality

This course is a starting point in NGS. It covers Biology prerequisites and quality control. Future courses will cover data analysis in more detail.

Project:

This course includes a step-by-step guided project.

This project will assess the quality of raw data from an Illumina sequencer.

You will then use FastQC and Trimmomatic to improve the quality of this data.

Prerequisites:

  • Biology and Chemistry at high school 10th grade level

  • Elementary Statistics such as interpreting charts, histograms, and box-and-whisker plots

  • You must enjoy Biology

This is an introductory course ideal for those with no prior experience in Next Generation Sequencing Analysis.

The second section of the course talking about basic concepts of genetics was very helpful for me as my biology knowledge is very limited. The narrative is slow and not natural, but the concepts are very well defined and described. I appreciate the speaker's effort to provide nice visual support for each concept. The third section was hard to follow for me. I lost track in many sub-sections. Overall it is a very good introductory course for beginners.

Many thanks to the author who prepared this course. This course is really good if anyone wants to improve their theoretical concepts about genome analysis and next generation sequencing for bioinformatics. My recommendation is that the author should add exercises at the end of every chapter in this course to give students more practical real world knowledge. By the way, this course helped me to improve my concepts.

Very good short course for those who are looking for an introduction of NGS and Bioinformatics, like me. The content was well organized and the pace of the course was perfect for me. Overview on the use of Galaxy platform for data analysis was really helpful to understand how it works. I would recommend to add tests after each chapter or at the end of the course.

it's a great intro to bioinformatics, and more than worth the money. I just hope the course could expand for like a part two where you go in detail about the genomic databases and use cases especially related to personalised medicine. BUT this is more than worth the money. and a great start if you are coming from a coding, or even a bio background but have forgotten the basics! Kudos :)

i'm actually a medical student interested in bioinformatics, and so far i'm really enjoying this course and i'm learning so much. i have one request tho, it would be very helpful if you could provide handouts as a required reading i think that would help the process and i'll take much less time writing notes. but overall, Great job and thank you for making learning interesting! all the best

This course has a very good basic introduction about Genetics and Next-Generation sequencing. It also included the use of Galaxy for sequencing and analyzing the data. The instructor arranged the course in a well-mannered way so that anyone without a primary knowledge can understand it.

Great explanation of NGS and Quality Control. It would be interesting to add a few more Data Analysis Tool at the end, such as transforming the FastQC into SAM/BAM , Variant Calling and Visualization. Also, when explaining the technology and biochemistry behind Illumina, it'd be good to have more visual aids, maybe a few macros or animation would be useful But great quality overal!! Thank you Shreeya Kumaresan

As an engineer completely alien to this discipline, I leave rather empty. While the instructor was conveying somehow interesting information, I don't feel I'm taking anything that would help me boost my career. I think other people more knowledgeable in the field might be able to enjoy it better, but I did not. Additionally, the approach of the instructor was very monotonous and slow, not engaging at all. Last, in some videos you can hear random sounds in the back. I'm being very harsh with this because is a platform for education and is expected to be paid. The quality is worth of a YouTube tutorial.

This course is good as a starting point for NGS. The initial genetics part is extremely good because concepts are explained in a simple and cleaner way. I have never seen a book or a video explained the genetics concepts this clear. The same pace didn't go through on NGS unfortunately, but NGS part is good as well. There is a little room to add more advanced videos on NGS. That will make this course the best resource on the internet. Overall it's a good course to start NGS. Udemy bugging in the middle of the course for rating is an irritating thing.

Very concise information - I will need to review most of the lectures. That said I am learning a lot on this subject. So I reviewed earlier sections and found latter section of the course much easier to follow. The presenters voice is very pleasant and soothing which makes doing this course in one sitting much easier. This course is highly recommended for people entering this fascinating field of genetic bioinformatics.
