Our take
Based on the ratings of 2,859 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a free, half-hour introduction to Elasticsearch, and it does exactly what the headline promises and nothing more. Across 14 lectures in four sections, Sezin Karli walks through installing Elasticsearch, starting a node, adding the Head and Marvel plugins, and running create, read, update and delete calls. It is aimed at people who know relational databases but have never touched a search engine. About 33,000 students have enrolled, and the 3.9 rating from nearly 2,900 reviews tells the story: fine as a first look, thin as a course.
Reviewers like that it is short, the pace is comfortable, and the slides make the terminology easy to follow. The complaints are bigger. The lectures were recorded for Elasticsearch 1.6 and 2.0, and the last update was December 2018, so the plugin chapter no longer matches what ships today. Several students say the installation steps did not work on current versions, and the setup is Windows-only, which left Mac users wanting more. A recurring gripe is the instructor's accent, and one reviewer found the auto-generated captions no help. A couple of low-star reviews also say he does things without explaining why. Others wanted at least a diagram of clusters, shards and indexes rather than watching files download and unzip in real time.
Because it costs nothing and takes half an hour, the downside is small. Treat it as a vocabulary primer, then move to something current. The Elasticsearch courses it sits beside on our site cover recent versions, Kibana and Logstash, so this is really a taster before committing to one of those. If you want to type real queries against a modern cluster, skip straight to a course built on a current version.
Pros
- Free and only 30 minutes, so it costs nothing to find out whether Elasticsearch interests you.
- Slides explain the core terms clearly; one reviewer who struggled with the audio still followed along.
- Pace is unhurried and well organized, from starting a node to the first CRUD requests.
- Assumes nothing beyond basic relational database knowledge, no programming needed.
Cons
- Recorded on Elasticsearch 1.6 and 2.0 and last updated in 2018; the plugin chapter no longer applies.
- Many reviewers found the instructor's accent hard to follow, and only auto-captions are available.
- Covers only basic syntax; no architecture diagrams, no conditional queries, and Windows-only setup.
The course is good for someone who wants to understand how to interact with ElasticSearch on a very elementary level. So just the Hello World of ElasticSearch.
True beginner level: it assumes only a passing familiarity with relational databases and no coding at all.

The course gives only basic syntax and nothing more. There is some information on installation of Head and Marvel plugins, which in fact nowhere used through out the course. In addition new versions of Kibana includes Console (former "Sense") plugin, thus there is no need to install it and this chapter should be rewritten.

The course is good for someone who wants to understand how to interact with ElasticSearch on a very elementary level. So just the Hello World of ElasticSearch. I expected a little more from the tutorial in terms of the internals of ElasticSearch and how it actually stores and retrieves information. Maybe some diagramatic representation of the architecture of some sort. But if the intent was just to get the Hello World of the basic CRUD operations then it did justice.

Its a good course for its price (free) but it is extremely short and covers a really old version of elastic and does not cover linux. Things did not work out of the box and I had to catch up to make them work. The instruction quality is good though. I am sure if the course was updated it would have been much better!

Informative course, it needs to be updated I installed ElasticSearch v6.3 along with Kibana 6.3, concerning the plugins I didn't to install Marvel nor head nor sense, instead, I installed Kibana which contains sense (know called 'Console'). Thanks for the course!

I wanted a step-by-step explanation of what ElasticSearch is and the basic ways to interact with it. This course does exactly that. Quick note: for anyone using ElasticSearch 5+, plugins are no longer supported. You'll need to find another GUI than what is recommended in this course.

Very basic, but short and worth working through. Questions about install and run on versions above 1 and on Mac OSX not covered in lectures, but answered in questions section. This course will help you install and run ES and get you through creating, retrieving, updating and deleting documents. A good start, but no more.

In my opinion, this has been a really nice course in order to take the first contact with ES. Unfotunately, the plugin installation and configuration way for the current version of ES (2.3.3 at June 16') and its plugins has changed. However, it can be easelly solved sufing a little the Internet and the official ES documentation.

Senzi is an excellent instructor and responds promptly if you get stuck. He has a solid grasp over ElasticSearch and explains the subject matter carefully. This was a free course and he impressed me enough to sign up for his paid course on ElasticSearch-101

The course Getting started with elastic search was awesome. I believe the course was for version elasticsearch1.7. In version 2. we cannot install marvel directly, we need kibana(https://www.elastic.co/downloads/marvel). This tutorial help me get started with elastic search. The voice clarity and pitch was good and kept me going:).
