Our take

Based on the ratings of 3,517 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short introduction to SharePoint Online team sites and OneDrive for Business, taught by Robert Crane, a Microsoft certified SharePoint professional. It runs about 3 hours across 24 short lectures, most with a PDF and a resource list. It is aimed at ordinary Office 365 users at work, not admins or site designers. Nearly 15,000 students have taken it, and the rating is 4.4 from 3,517 reviews.

Reviewers like the clear explanations, the cursor highlighting that makes each click easy to follow, and the recap at the end of each lesson. Several call it a good first look at what SharePoint can do. The complaints are consistent. The recordings date from 2013 to 2017, so menus and features have changed, and some resource links are dead. A few say Crane speaks fast, the audio level wobbles between lessons, there are no exercises or quizzes, and initial site setup is missing.

Last updated in December 2017, the course shows its age. Treat it as a map of the concepts rather than a click by click guide to today's interface. People on a newer tenant, or anyone who wants hands on practice, may do better with something more recent. For a first overview before you start using the tools at work, it does the job.

Best forOffice 365 workers new to SharePoint who want a quick, narrated tour of team sites and OneDrive.
Skip it ifYou need current menus, site setup from scratch, or design depth. Many recordings date back to 2013.

Pros

  • Short: 24 lectures in about 3 hours, so a first overview is done in an afternoon
  • Cursor highlighting makes each sequential click easy to follow, per reviewers
  • Each lesson ends with a recap that helps the steps stick
  • Covers both team sites and OneDrive for Business, with PDFs and resource lists

Cons

  • Recordings date from 2013 to 2017, so menus and features differ from today's
  • No quizzes, exercises or assignments, and no setup of a site from scratch
  • Some reviewers found the pace fast, the audio uneven, and file sharing repeated
Easy to follow along with, good introduction to SharePoint and it's features.
Sarah Silvia, a student

Beginner is accurate for Office 365 users at work. One reviewer found it too basic for site design.

The information so far has been great for someone like me who is completely new to sharePoint, but he speaks rather fast. I wish the information was presented just a little bit slower, as I am trying to mimic what he is teaching on my own computer. Otherwise this is a really helpful training.

Interesting course to understand what functionalities are available in SharePoint and to learn the basics. Clear that there is no time at the beginner level to go deeper. However, for some functionalities it would be interesting to get some practical use-cases as an outlook for the intermediate level.

Some of the "links" that were already prepared by evaluator are not already in place for people. Explain how to make that SharePoint link for the sync. The whole sync function needs to be better explained. I would also like to see how to make a custom page where you can link to multiple files on multiple teams.

I had to get an intranet setup with about a week to learn Sharepoint. I’ve used Sharepoint before but it’s been a really long time so a lot has changed. This course got me up to speed fast and I was able to get work done by the due date. I was even able to train a few staff on how it all worked as if I had always known it!

The most things I already knew because I am working over 2 years in the field Microsoft SharePoint (2010 and 2016 On-Premise). But there where also new things to learn for me like in the topic Implementing a MailBox in a SharePoint Teamsite and in the lessons with OneDrive. On the whole it was a great course.

Buena instrucción no improvisada, muchas gracias.

I think overall the course was well laid out. I came in already know a little about sharepoint but was looking for reasons to use team sites over just OneDrive for Business. I would also like to see some more explanations of things instead of making comments like "that is more in depth than we get into here".

By Maurizio Cichero on 2/12/2018

So far very clear and fast. Some time little boring (e.g. when the speaker explains the text formats option again and again) I miss a general overview on the information organization. May be a graphic representation would help. Thanks so much for building the course and the excellent documentation

Well structured and easy to follow. I have never used ShairPoint before but this course give a good understanding on the possibilities with ShairPoint. If you are a easy learner then yes this goes through the basics but still this is a good start if you are new to ShairPoint.

Great course. The material was very well covered but more importantly the instructor was very responsive. I had a slightly more advanced question and Robert got back to me incredibly quickly with a thorough response. I definitely recommend this course and this instructor
