Course Description

Do you need to learn how to set goals--fast? Has your manager asked you if your goals are SMART? If you want to measure and evaluate your progress and make an impact, you are in the right place!

Setting goals seems like it should be one of the easier things to do at work. You are good at your job, so writing down thoughts on what you will tackle in the next 3-6 months should come naturally, right? Too often we set goals that are vague, undefined ideas about what we want to accomplish at work. Without concrete steps to achieve those goals, and without setting measurable metrics, it can be impossible to know if you’ve reached them.

In this course, you will:

  • Explore why goal setting is important and why it’s worth your time

  • Bust myths about goal setting

  • Figure out what MBO, OKR, BHAG, and SMART stand for--and why everyone talks about them

  • Discover the fundamentals of goal setting

  • Master the SMART goal setting framework

  • Identify your current top 3-5 goals at work and make them SMART

  • Create a realistic plan to meet your newly set goals

Using a combination of worksheets, downloadable PDFs, checklists, and other resources to help you through this process, by the end of this course, you’ll have a manageable list of goals and steps to take to reach them.

As an executive coach, I work with executives and their teams to better understand what they are responsible for and how to hold each other accountable. I’ve seen first hand the destruction that can be wrought when goals are not concrete, not written down or discussed so that everyone is on the same page and working toward the same objectives. Teams need commonly shared information about what to do, who is taking on each step, and when each step needs to be completed. Setting goals, and motivating others to accomplish them, is not an innate skill. It’s one that can be developed, and in this course, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

Without the ability to set real, actionable goals for yourself and how to measure them and judge whether or not you’re reaching them, you’ll fall short every time. Don’t allow that to happen.

So, if you’re ready to work out exactly how to get from where you are now to where you want to be at work, then sign up for this course and let’s get started!

The information about Smart goals in particular was good, as well as the supporting/expanding questions (for example, how to think about each SMART category, with specific questions to prompt reflection - extremely helpful!) However, the course didn't address other, foundational issues I have with goal-setting - especially around topic 2 "why goals are your best friend at work". I'm a person with a lot of internal resistance to goal setting, specifically because I feel like they limit my creativity, and I'm not particularly motivated by money, challenge, competition, achievement or attention. (In fact, I fundamentally dislike most of those things and, as a result, I actively avoid them). Goal-setting feels like something I'm being forced to do for administrative reasons, not something that I'm doing authentically for myself, so I had a really hard time connecting to the importance of goal-setting. The information and support in this section seemed to be, "just decide you're wrong about goals and change your mindset" - which I didn't find particularly helpful. I'm sure my issues with goal-setting are more to do with my own personal psychology, so perhaps it's an unrealistic ask - but if you ever create a course about how to overcome those more personal/internal resistances to goal-setting, that would be fantastic!

I recently completed your course and I appreciate the effort you put into creating this course to help individuals enhance their goal-setting skills in the workplace. However, I found that the content was quite basic and covered knowledge that many might already be familiar with. And the overall delivery of the course felt monotonous, which made it difficult to stay engaged. Additionally, I found the final assessment questions to be somewhat irrelevant to the material covered in the course. I was keep getting 60% on the quiz and at the end it doesn’t show you which answers you got wrong.

I learned through this course that the reason that I failed at many of my goals was due to not really knowing how to set them/break them down to smaller steps to where they were achievable, and not really communicating with my peers/manager as much as i should have.

By Bram Thotha on 2/29/2024

Large goals are achievable when it is broken into sub goals. Communicating your goals allows others to assist you and also makes you accountable. Using the SMART method of setting goals ensures that your goals are achieved.

I enjoyed this course. The concept of SMART is great and can be applied in the work environment and personal life as well. Leila presented the information well. The resources and the follow-up activities are good. I would encourage you to take this course, devote your time and apply the concept to your projects. It takes time to follow the SMART method but it will pay off in the end.

I liked the general presentation on all types of goals, I appreciate the details provided for SMART goals, the language around each aspect and the checklists provided as resources. The message from the Thank you section is very positive and motivating, reminds you that goals are not only to help the company but also your career. I didn't like that she used too many times the finger quotes and at times seemed a bit patronizing.

Yes this was helpful for me at this time. I am in the middle of buying a large amounts of items and I am not sure how much is to much so I need to set goals but didn't know where to start with that mindset so this video was perfect helping me to understand how to get started on this goal I need to set.

I have/am looking at a lot of content regarding goalsetting. I am looking to make improvements in life outside of work in order to further my professional development. I think I can apply these principles

"Goal setting at work: Plan for success and reach your goals" is my first course on Udemy. I really appreciated the very practical, clear and concise theoretical and practical content. Leila Bulling Towne has a good command of her subject and is an excellent narrator. I think this is the kind of training everyone should complete both to achieve their professional and personal goals.
