Course Description

This course examines the oldest and the shortest Gospel in the New Testament, recorded for us by Mark. You are invited to study the life of Jesus and the Good News he both announced and enacted. Join Prof. N.T. Wright as he teaches and guides you to look through Mark at Jesus. Come find out what makes this Gospel distinct from Matthew's and Luke's accounts. Learn the reasons Mark selected and arranged his material in the particular way that he did. Discern the ways in which Mark may have launched a new literary genre for his time. Explore what Mark has to say about what God has done in and through Jesus. Discover the remarkable achievement of Jesus, and how Jesus calls people to be his followers as a result.

Students in this course will examine the Gospel of Mark through the following frameworks:

- A 'biography' of Jesus.

- A book about how Israel's scriptures and narrative came to fulfillment.

- A book about how God's Kingdom--the place where God reigns over his world in a new way--was launched 'on earth as in heaven' in and through Jesus.

- A community-forming narrative about a new mode of being, a new epoch of world history, and a new people.

- An action-packed story of confrontation between Jesus and opposing powers, both worldly and spiritual.

- A book which invites readers to become part of the story themselves.

This course contains 27 lectures by Prof. N.T. Wright, along with corresponding quizzes to check your comprehension, and practice exercises to help you engage with the material. There are no extra academic articles or required readings. The 'articles' in the course include the biblical texts, and the practice exercises, which offer 8-10 prompts to help you absorb, reflect, and practice what you are learning.

this course help me to know who is Mark, the Key verse : 1:11 And the voice come from Heaven : you are my son, whom I love, with you I'm well Pleased, 1:15 The time is fulfilled and the Kingdom of God is at hand ; repent and believe in the Gospel, 1:17 come, fellow me, Jesus said ,and I will make you fishers of Men, 10:45 for even the son of man did not come to be served, but serve, and to give his his life as a ransom for Many, 12:33 Love the Lord you God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength: the second is this Love your neighbor as yourself, 16:15 He said to them , Go into all the world and Preach the Good news to all creation, and understand the Relationship between Mark Gospel and the old testament,

The teaching of NT Wright makes me think about the Bible and the gospel very differently. Instead of reading the text and giving opinion Wright teaches you how to do a deep investigation of the text. This course shows me how to do qualitative research on the gospel of Mark examining it from many different angles. Wright calls this a multi-layered reading. He shows you how to focus on the compilation of the book and the meaning of the book at the same time.

My favorite theologian teaching my favorite book of the Bible! This is the course I've been waiting for. I've taken every N.T. Wright class on Udemy and this one did NOT disappoint. Mark is a short gospel, but there's a depth to the meaning. Professor Wright spends a lot of time in the introduction talking about the different layers--which helps pave the way for greater understanding later. This is a class I'll re-watch year after year.

Prof Wright's opening lecture is on its own worth the price of the whole course. And there are still so many more lectures to come.I thought I knew a lot about Mark's gospel but this has illuminated so clearly a host of issues. What a blessing to have access to Prof Wright's wise teaching about Mark's gospel which sends me back to prayerfully reading and reflecting on the gospel itself and its implications for action as a follower of Jesus.

I find these courses with N.T. Wright most stimulating and spiritually inspiring, as well as highly informative. This for me is both a desirable and needful exercise in order to not atrophy in mind and learning capacity, and for devotional engagement with the Word. They are for me an invaluable spiritual ‘Life’ preserver in an otherwise sedentary life foisted on me by age and stage after 50 years in full-time Christian ministry by this season of pandemic restraints and weather induced shut in. Grateful!

Although Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels, Professor Wright's teaching, including both the historical context and explaining it as a form of Apocalyptic, has lifted Mark's Gospel off the page and brought it to life in a whole new way for me. Mark's use of dynamic and dramatic language often means we can read through Mark too quickly; Professor Wright takes all the dynamism and drama and expands it to tell a fuller and more complete story where, as always, Jesus is at the centre. Although Mark is believed to be the earliest of the four Gospels, after taking this course it has become just as relevant to my daily life today as a follower of Jesus as it would have been to those in the middle of the 1st Century. A truly excellent course for anyone wanting to understand why the Gospels remain relevant throughout all times.

The Gospel of Mark is such a breath of fresh air and the very good news we need to hear over and over again! Especially in a protracted pandemic with bad news upon bad news. The Gospel of Jesus is the beacon of light and hope we can cling onto. The excellent theology and insights by Professor Wright on Mark's Gospel is enlightening and empowering. I highly recommend this course!

If you want to know about the who, where, why and when about Mark, follow the course. If you want to know about healing, and the inside off healing: forgiveness, follow the course. Mark shows the authority of the gospel. The authority of Jesus is explained as a priestly and above all messianic authority. The parables take on a completely new meaning through Professor Wright's explanation. It is massive course, not only in length but also in briljant exegese.

By Jeffrey Turnbull on 9/18/2021

Prof Wright's great knowledge and understanding of Greek, the first century world and the whole of Scripture gives us great insight into what Mark is saying about Jesus' ministry in his Gospel. It is remarkable how he shows us both what individual passages are saying but also the big picture of the Gospel as a whole, which is something we often miss in our day-to-day Bible reading. This course will be a real blessing to all who follow it.
