Course Description

Learn how to use the Robot Operating System (ROS) platform which is used to program real world robotics. The course is designed for beginners with little, to no experience using ROS. The coding in this course is done in Python 3 using ROS Noetic. We will go over installation of ROS, how to develop code that uses the framework, and even go over simulation tools so you can make your own robot and control it in simulation, with code that can easily be ported to a real robotic system.

The course is broken into 6 main sections:

  1. Course Introduction

  2. Environment Setup

  3. ROS Overview

  4. Using ROS in Python

  5. Robotics Simulation

  6. Course Outro

Section 1 is a general introduction to the course.

In section 2 you will learn how to setup your computer to be able to run ROS. This includes utilizing the Ubuntu operating system, installing ROS, and introducing you to the code editors we will be using in this course.

In section 3 I will teach you at a high level what "tools" are included in the ROS framework, and what each of them do.

You will spend the majority of this course in section 4, learning how to implement all the various ROS tools in your very own Python code.

Section 5 will touch on using the simulation and sensor data visualization tools ROS has to offer.

And lastly the course outro will go over what you can do once you have completed the course, as well as some frequently asked questions and a survey to help me improve the course.

So what are you waiting for? Let's get to programming, using the most widely used open source robotics platform, ROS.

Raymond Andrade

Hey there, I'm Raymond Andrade.

I am a  Robotic Systems Developer, specializing in software development for marine robotic systems. Besides working in the field of marine robotics, I was the project manager of the University of Hawaii Marine Robotics Research lab during my time there doing my undergraduate degree. There I spearheaded robotics projects such as the RobotX challenge, to marine robotics demonstrations in partnership with the US Navy and NATO allies.

In my courses I hope to provide a clear and aesthetically appealing approach to teaching. Searching the internet for relevant robotics content that is easy to understand can be tricky. Therefore I try to keep my courses as high a quality as possible, packed with one-on-one discussions, aesthetic animations, and walk through coding exercises.

I hope to help make robots more prevalent in everyday society. Hopefully together we can create robots everyone can benefit from.

As an introductory Course It's great to show some of the fundamental features of ROS Version 1 as well as a detailed description of it's structures of comunication based on topics pipelines and also the basic features of gazebo and rviz. The best thing showed (my opinion) was that when the projects were finished little or nothing had to be hardcoded on the py file nodes, everything could be controlled, getted or setted only by terminal commands.

Hes very good at explaining what you need to do and its very easy. I will recommend this course by far from others (-: You can learn ROS so Easily with this very cheap course!!!

Personalmente, creo que es una buena introduccion, vi varios videos de youtube y no entendia como estaban estructuradas las carpetas ni como funcionaban las relaciones en ros. Con esto pude captar muchas cosas.

This is my first course in ROS and the instructor has broken down all the complex things into simple concepts that are well understood. I recommend this course to every beginner and even non-beginners who would love to refresh their memory. Looking forward to taking subsequent courses taught by the instructor. Thank you!

You get the basic idea

Some parts are very well explained, but some parts are run past too fast; could use a more in-depth explanation of how the "nifty trick" works in detail

This course is not complete but its explained simply and great. It honostly deserves its money. Actually although it was incomplete and some stuff like urdf are not explained properly, (also moveit), it was the best course I have ever had on ROS. trust me just buy you wont regret.

Brilliantly curated and follows a really logical pathway to help one understand not just the how, but also the why of the ROS API - Major Kudos indeed.

By Chase Coffman on 10/28/2020

Yes it was pretty good I just don't think some things were explained enough. For instance the Actions project was very hard and I pretty much just watched what he did.

By Jordan Dalessandro on 8/25/2020

This course is such a relief from the confusing tutorials that the ROS website has to offer. I love that Raymond brings so many visual elements to his teaching method. He is clear and concise when he speaks. He definitely knows what he is talking about and he seems happy to share it with the students. He shows you the core concepts of ROS and how to use them with an explanation for each step.
