Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,462 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a 3.5 hour acrylic abstract course taught by Andy Morris, a full time painter in Dallas whose work hangs in a hotel there. It is built around demos. He paints, explains his thinking, and the student follows along on their own canvas. The 14 sections run from a first painting and a simple landscape to neutrals, abstract expressionism and art panels. It is aimed at people who have never painted, though one reviewer with years of experience said it gave a fresh perspective.
Reviewers like the relaxed, encouraging teaching and the way projects start easy and get a little harder. Several mention practical money savers, like house paint and decorator brushes, and the color mixing lessons. The complaints are fairly consistent too. Some find the videos long and slow. One wanted a closer look at the brush and palette. A few wanted more on composition, paint basics and abstract theory. One reviewer expected to paint the art shown on the cover and felt misled.
The course was last updated in January 2023, which matters little for painting technique. Of roughly 1,460 ratings, most are four or five stars, and the average is 4.4. The supply list is basic, and substitutions are allowed, so getting started is simple. Treat it as a gentle first step, not a design education. Anyone wanting rigorous composition lessons should look elsewhere, but a beginner who wants paint on canvas this week will likely be happy.
Pros
- Easy projects first, so beginners are painting right away and building confidence
- Money savers like house paint and decorator brushes alongside the pricier brands
- Andy Morris explains what he is doing and why while he paints
- Color mixing with a restricted palette is named as especially useful
Cons
- Some reviewers find the videos long and slow, with little to take away
- Light on composition, abstract theory and basics like gesso and mediums
- One reviewer wanted a closer view of the brush and palette while painting
The course is laid out to get the student to start painting easy projects right away which helps to build confidence. This helped me tremendously!
Beginner level fits: no painting experience needed, just a basic supply list with an applicator bottle and a spatula.

What a fun, exciting introduction to painting abstract art! Andy has created projects that are doable and progress from simple to a bit more complex. He teaches important concepts clearly and makes them easy to understand, and covers a breadth of topics I have not found in other introductory courses. He also includes info about how to save money while creating beautiful pieces. Thanks, Andy! You're the best!

Overall great course! Andy explains well what he is doing and why, and has many practical tips. I like how you can just get right into painting even if you don't have any experience. Even for someone who has painted for several years, this was refreshing and gave a new perspective to painting, and I'm excited to evolve my style further!

I enjoyed Andy Morris teaching style. The course is laid out to get the student to start painting easy projects right away which helps to build confidence. This helped me tremendously! I have tried other courses were you leave the classroom, go home and look at a blank canvas and just can't seem to get started. Thank you Andy!

I learned some tips I can use. I am especially grateful to know about using house paint for my large abstract paintings. I enjoyed learning the technique used, it is much more liberal than other abstract artists I have learned from. For me, some of the videos were to long and I would have liked to see the brush and pallet while painting.

Finished part 1. Teacher gives lots of encouragement. good advice for those who want to sell their art. Good information for beginners regarding supplies, color mixing but I would appreciate more information on what is the difference with paint, gesso and medium. Best way to thin paint. What is abstract theory-that is I don't want to copy your painting, I want to create something that is more than throwing paint at the canvas. Maybe that is in part 2.

Good intro to basics. The patchwork format is especially interesting.

I enjoyed this course as Andy didn't rush it and talk real fast like some teachers do. He did a lot of demonstrations by just painting and that, I believe, really helps to get ideas and techniques. I look forward to the next course!
