Get the most out of your guitar!

Have you ever wanted to get a liquid, "electric" feel and sound out of your acoustic guitar? Do you want to get the most power and sound out of your acoustic and make your notes sing with sustain?

Learning the fundamentals of Gypsy Jazz will put a powerful approach to guitar at your finger tips. Inspired by the legendary virtuoso Django Reinhardt, the Gypsy Jazz style is one of the most technically difficult and expressive ways to play the guitar.

Gypsy Jazz harkens back to the days before the electric guitar when players had to make their instruments ring out with great volume using only a pick and their hands. Since most of the tunes played in Gypsy Jazz were composed in the swing era, you will also gain profound insight into the fundamentals of twentieth century popular music.  We will start by learning how to play in the style of Django Reinhardt, and then use this foundation to develop your own, unique style of playing.

Content and Overview

The first part of the course is an introduction to the basics of accompaniment. Then we will explore single-note right hand technique and begin to lay the ground work for soloing.

We will cover a range of topics.

Technique: I will guide you through the unique rest-stroke picking technique employed by virtuoso guitarist Django Reinhardt and the top guitarists in the Gypsy Jazz genre.

Rhythm: Learn how to play your guitar like a drum. Bring out the swing and rhythm. This is useful for many different styles of guitar playing and isn't limited to Gypsy Jazz.

Soloing: Get deep into soloing through Jazz chord progressions. Get to know the nuts and bolts of Swing Guitar soloing in a way that will enhance your overall playing in other genres as well (Rock, Swing, Jazz, Bluegrass etc.)

Practice: Develop strong practice habits and techniques to help your playing get to new heights of competency.

Learn the whole guitar neck: Gypsy Jazz playing utilizes the entirety of the fretboard. Build an infrastructure that will enable your fingers to fly around the neck of the guitar with great  freedom.

Performance: Learn how and what to focus on when you perform so that you and your audience can have a more powerful music experience.

This course is not just for Gypsy Jazz guitarists!

Many of the facets we will explore in this course can be used to not only help you play in the style of Django, but will also benefit your competence in  almost every other plectrum based approach to guitar.  A solid foundation in Gypsy Jazz picking technique can enable you to achieve unmatched precision, speed, and tone that will increase the quality of your playing in Bluegrass, Rock, Pop, Modern Jazz, etc. Gypsy Jazz harmony will spice up your licks and phrases as well.

If you are coming from a Classical or Flamenco background, Gypsy Jazz is an easy gateway into learning how to play improvisational Jazz. Many of the Gypsy Jazz motifs, melodies, and it's  overall aesthetic have roots in both Classical and Flamenco guitar.

By end of this course, you will be armed with the basic accompaniment technique necessary to sit in on a Gypsy Jazz jam or gig. You will also become acquainted with the single note rest stroke picking technique. The third part of the course covers fundamentals of Gypsy Jazz soloing.

Just watched first full lesson and I already have it down. Very well explained. This course is good for anyone who has played guitar for while and can make chords. This is not for day 1 beginners, I would say I’m intermediate at best. Fun course!

By Chris Meade on 11/26/2018

I've tried to play gypsy jazz before, but I did not grasp these basic building blocks before jumping into some songs. The only question left unanswered is: What kind of pick is used to play gypsy jazz guitar? My pick looks thicker than the instructor's pick.

By George Caldin on 8/31/2018

Definitely helpful for learning the different rhythm techniques in the gypsy jazz genre, which are all explained in this very clearly. However as an already experienced guitarist I found the lessons of section 4 on arpeggios pretty unhelpful, as would most guitarists who have had experience in any other music genre (this section is around an hour long so a large part of the course). Very basic stuff that doesn't need an hour to explain To anyone who is totally new to guitar I would definitely recommend this course, but to anyone who already has considerable knowledge about guitar I cannot recommend it.

By Jesper Akerman on 3/1/2018

I am a beginner to gypsy jazz but not a beginner at the guitar itself. I feel like the beginner part in the info is a bit misleading even though I now understand the course is more for complete beginners, at both the instrument itself as well as music theory. I expected to learn more about chords and progressions. Dom7 arpeggios and lines. How to play diminished stuff. I expected to learn more common songs, not just the Minor swing and bossa. I learned the waltz but don't really know what to do with it. Good things from the course was the more philosophical ideas Alex talked about in the beginning. Things like "keep your mind still" " keep everything loose, even the mind" " meditate on the things you practice" I really liked that. Sorry for kind of ranting the course. I just thought I would get more out of it / Jesper

Pretty thorough, like getting lessons. I could have paid much more. But I would have liked to hear more playing as to know what to do with the lesson. Or even better have him play the chord progression while I peddled in the arpeggios he just thought and visa versa. I learned some things though and feels worth it!

By Vince Marrone on 8/1/2017

Alex does a great job of breaking down the basic gypsy jazz rhythm technique. Mastering this lesson is key to getting the swing and projection for an authentic sound. His no-nonsense approach will have you doing it right in no time.

By Roberto M. on 7/22/2017

Alex is a master at his craft and it comes across in the course. He understands the basics as well as the advanced aspects and can teach with authority. He also comes across as genuinely wanting you to learn...which makes watching this course a motivational pleasure. Its a perfect way to learn.

By Joshua Diedrich on 7/17/2017

Really great class. Excellent pacing, Excellent explanations, instructor is charming and feels like he's just sitting there talking to you in your room. No pretense or self-promotion, very down to earth and willing to connect with students. Best guitar class I've found on Udemy. I do wish he would open up and play a solo with the notes at the end of the solo section, or demonstrate more in general how the basics can be used at a high level by just having fun and playing on camera sometimes, but great foundation. Make a part II! want to go deeper.

By David Levitt on 7/16/2017

Alex is a master of the loose-wrist technique and in this video he shows the components of the technique very clearly and in great detail. The importance of this technique in playing Gypsy Jazz cannot be overstated: it is the technical foundation of the style.
