Our take
Based on the ratings of 8,841 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2015. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a free, 66-minute introduction to TypeScript spread across 13 lectures. Daniel Stern walks through installing the compiler with Node and npm, then covers types, interfaces, classes, inheritance and modules, with a short detour into Grunt for build automation. It's pitched at people who already write JavaScript and want to understand why TypeScript exists before they pick a longer course. With more than 104,000 students and roughly 8,800 reviews, it has drawn a big crowd, and the free price probably explains a lot of that.
Reviewers call it a good basic tutorial, and one says it finally cleared up interfaces and modules after struggling with them. The instructor gets credit for keeping people engaged, including one 71-year-old who says it held their attention. The complaints are just as consistent. The course was last updated in April 2015 and reviewers, including three from 2026, call parts of it outdated. Section 5, Building an App with TypeScript, has no lectures at all, and a couple of reviewers want more on using TypeScript in real projects. One finds the video blurry, another the zoom edits distracting, and one says example classes named after the Starks are harder to follow than real code.
About three quarters of reviews land at four or five stars, which is fair for a free hour. It isn't a substitute for a full-length course such as Understanding TypeScript or Typescript: The Complete Developer's Guide. Treat it as a free warm-up: watch it in an evening, then move on to one of those if TypeScript is going to matter to you.
Pros
- Free and only 66 minutes, so it fits in a single evening
- Beginner-friendly coverage of types, interfaces, classes and modules; one reviewer says it finally cleared up interfaces and modules
- Covers setting up the compiler with Node and npm, not just the syntax
- Over 104,000 students and a 4.3 rating from about 8,800 reviews
Cons
- Last updated April 2015; three reviewers from 2026 still call parts of it outdated
- Section 5, Building an App with TypeScript, has no lectures, and reviewers want more on real projects
- Blurry video and zoom edits bother some viewers; one finds the Stark-family example classes confusing
This tutorial is outdated. But still relevant! Good basic tutorial.
Listed as intermediate: you need solid JavaScript and a little Node, but no TypeScript at all.
What you will learn
- Compile, Test and Run TypeScript on your workstation
- Use TypeScript classes and type annotations
- Build and run a simple app using TypeScript

By taking this course you will,
- Set your PC or Mac up to develop TypeScript
- Be able to understand why TypeScript is used to build large web applications
- Use TypeScript's classes and error checking
- Create and extend TypeScript classes
- Share Code via Modules
In the first section, we will learn about what projects TypeScript is appropriate for. We will learn who makes TypeScript, and what projects use TypeScript every day.
In the second section, we will learn about using Node and NPM to install TypeScript, and how to use the command line to compile TypeScript into JavaScript. As a bonus, we'll learn a bit about TypeScript compiler errors.
In the final section, we will take a look at a few of TypeScript's many features.
We will learn about types, how they are used, what kinds are available in TypeScript, and how to make your own.
We will learn about interfaces, inheritance, and TypeScript classes. Using the module system, we will share code between TypeScript files and compile them to JavaScript.
This course includes many videos, as well as links to useful tools like the TypeScript handbook.
This course should take 3-4 hours to complete, as you may wish to pause frequently to try the many code examples provided yourself.
This code is ideal for anyone wanting a solid beginner's foundation in TypeScript, as the hands-on lecture format will ensure that any pupil has a working knowledge of the basics.

El curso, aunque orientado a introducir el lenguaje, ofrece un contenido suficientemente completo para comprender de manera sólida su manejo. Incluye un ejercicio práctico que resulta adecuado y bien equilibrado respecto a la duración total del programa.

I Actually Learned something about typescript as well as grunt so that was interesting. The teacher kept me totally engaged , which I must say Kudo's to him. I'm 71 and my attention span is shorter than a lot of 5 y.o.'s Ha!, Ha!, Ha. Good Job Teach. I maybe able to try one of the harder typescript classes now that I made it through this one. :)

Tutorial is a fine starting point for people completely new to TypeScript while having used JavaScript to at least some extend. The lessons only explain what certain constructs offer and do, but the videos do not elaborate much on the “why” to motivate the choice of certain design patterns. Apart for your personal preference, do not expect any technical jargon that could speed up learning if you already know more than one other script language.

When doing Angular course, mid-way I realised, knowing basics of typescript are very important. The part of the course I liked most was steps to use inheritance and calling of module.

Daniel Stern could get a little too monotone and repetitive to the point that most users attention would have wandered off by then. This caused me to not be able to fully understand and grasp the concept quickly. But at other times, it was perfect. (I suggest that you put background music from Spotify at an unbelievably low volume...)

I think this is a very good introduction about the typescript language. The tutorials are well done. All the material is exposed by the instructor are presented in a fine way and it is easy to learn the subject by following the course. That being said, besides the course being awesome, which it really is, it missed a complete section (don't know why the section is not there), the final one just before the conclusions, in which , supposedly, the instructor will present a final complete app that will wrap all the concepts presented in the previous lessons. With these final tutorial in place the course would be perfect in my opinion. Anyway many thanks to the instructor for this fine course.

Great course for beginners, which I am. However, I'm using Windows, and had a problem running the install command for Grunt, receiving a message saying it was refusing to install Grunt as a dependency of itself. I think this is not uncommon, and wish the instructor could provide a heads up and maybe a workaround during the course. It sucks to be clicking along, only to be suddenly stopped cold during the grunt section to have to go and google (did not find a quick solution). All in all, great course, though.

The course content is well thought in order to demonstrate an ideas behind the TypeScript from Microsoft. The introduction helps to overcome initial surprise of yet another JavaScript based "super set " language. The course just skims on surface of Typescript environment. IMHO the Author should emphasize a fact, that TypeScript is missing many features of ECMA Script ES6. And is recommended to use with Angular 2 framework.

This course explains it much more easier than the course I saw on Lynda about Typescript. Definitely got me going up and running on typescript and understanding it better. it is clear, easy to understand, and explains it without confusing or missing any parts like other tutorials. Thank you!
