Course Description

Photography is about the frame you put around an image, yet the story does not end there.  Your photo goes beyond the frame, through a kind of intuition.  It captures the gesture of a particular moment and conveys a message through careful targeting and emphasis of certain key features.  It says "Look!  This is special."

To make your photography special you need to understand composition, which IS the essence of photography.  Yes, exposure, aperture and ISO are important, but it is the composition of your photos that will make people take notice of your images and remember them.

When you create a composition there are countless possibilities.  Learn how to make certain decisions creatively and with accuracy.  There are nine key elements utilised to achieve stunning photo composition and I take you through them - step by step.  You'll have plenty of practice and plenty of opportunities for constructive feedback.  And, I've simplified the content of the course so there are no fancy photography terms to remember.

If you are looking to improve your photography from Good to WOW, then join me for a creative photography journey.

Mark A Paulda

Mark Paulda is a curious minded Gentleman Wayfarer, and international travel photographer, who thrives on challenging everything he knows as a Westerner.  Having two best-selling books on the market, Mark's publisher, TCU Press, calls him an author, though he is unsure about that title.  "El Paso 120," Mark's latest book, was named one ot the Top Books of Texas for 2015, and he was a featured author at the Texas Book Festival.  There are a few more books in the "pipeline," as they say in the publishing world.

That said, Paulda has flown well over a million miles around the world - mostly with his camera.  He has walked over 120 miles with a Nomadic Berber Tribe in North Africa, co-hosted First Lady Laura Bush's visit to El Paso, was nominated for a Grammy for CD Cover Art (Recollections by Asia Featuring John Payne), discovered that Happiness is indeed a place in Bhutan, and is teaching a young Balinese man, Gede, the "art of photography" so Gede can tell the story of Bali from his perspective.  Oh!  And, London is one of Mark's most favourite cities (in addition to Venice).   For more about Mark Paulda, and his great experiences around the world, please visit his blog - The Gentleman Wayfarer.

This course is recommended for all levels while it is definitely for beginners. As a practicing artist and teacher myself, it was nice to revisit what I studied in art school though I was expecting to delve a lot more depth in what dynamic photography is. This course would be very good for those who have only very little knowledge about composition, and photography in general.

By Juan Luis Pérez Blanco on 1/30/2021

No, el título me confundió, se acerca más a elementos de la composición que a composición de fotografía dinámica.

By Judeus Itutud on 5/20/2020

Topics and techniques discussed are very interesting. There are a lot of practical samples. I wish however that some videos are devoted to live demos of the rule being discussed.

By Michael Neale on 5/11/2020

Very interesting course and great presenter. While a lot of the content wasn't new to me, there were a few elements I hadn't heard of e.g. Dutch Tilt. Keen to develop my artistic skills of photography with this additional knowledge.

This course was very well done. It exceeded my expectations. The instructor used techniques in his presentation that helped me focus on what he was talking about, not upon him (e.g., he was often visible by silhouette only). After introducing a concept, his use of visual examples was outstanding. I would recommend this course to any photographer who, like me, has struggled with composition beyond the basics, such as "the rule of thirds."

By Helmut Bartens on 4/18/2019

Everything presented makes sense. The question is how to apply it for my own photos. Not so simple. Yes I believe you, practice is he way. Must take the rules along until I know all of them by heart. Tend to lock onto a few of them and forget the rest. Work to be done. Thank you.

By Erika Clarkson on 1/18/2019

Well explained with good ideas, especially the bonus exercises. And as the tutor says, practice, practice, practice is absolutely key to it all.

By Paul Waxman on 12/4/2018

Having started years ago with 35mm film, I already understood the basics of a good picture. This course is making me more conscious of the structure (composition) of the pictures I take. Since photography is deeply personal, I don't agree with everything in this course but, it is making me more aware of the various components of my pictures, question some of the compositional choices I made, and where I could make them better.

By Daniel Williams on 11/23/2018

Lots of information about the different composition tools that can be used. Explained simply with some good examples. Nicely paced with supporting material.

By Anonymized User on 9/13/2018

I found the step by step course well constructed and even though I have been an artist for many years, it still opened my eyes to new ways of seeing. However, because the instructor has his own photographic work to do, he is not always available on a daily basis, which I feel slows down the learning pace. Thank you for a great course.
