Love this course!! I thought I'd be less interested in the music theory part but turns out it piqued my interest big time and before I know it I am now all over the internet digging deeper into music theory and full on learning music! The course is well built as it first gets you invested because of your interest in garageband, but you quickly realize that you do need (and want) to learn music theory if you really want to become a good musician. I like that it wasn't built the other way around because starting with music theory before concretely trying anything in GB might have made me want to quit before even starting. This is a good introductory step to music production. Thank you!

Yes! worth the money for sure!!

so far the best thing I learned was quantizing a track. that's something I've struggled with on garage band and musical typing. im excited for the music theory part and im glad that you added this into the course becuase i feel like i am musically talented but know nothing about actual music theory.

This is an excellent course for beginners. The explanations are very clear, the instructor really starts from the beginning (how to download garage band) and the final material on major and minor chords, although not really related to garage band, gives useful information on how to "match" melody with bass and drums.

By Josh Gallacher on 1/19/2016

Although you will learn about some (I stress on some) of Garage Bands features in this course you won't learn all of them or how to use them effectively and you won't learn anything that you couldn't have really figured out on your own with a little time dabbling inside the programme. The videos appear to have been recorded on the fly with no prior planning, like it's being made up as it goes along and there are mistakes within the videos that are just left in. One video in particular there is a problem aligning the tracks together as the track being dropped in won't snap into alignment with the others. Rather than figure out why it isn't snapping together the instructor just moves all the tracks to align with the new one and throws it out as a creative solution rather than actually figuring out what was wrong... which by the way EDIT > 'Snap To Grid' (or command + G for the keyboard short cut) which when ticked helps you move the track snap into place with the rest (literally took less than a minute to find that on my own). Maybe I had higher expectations for the course than what it was but honestly I expected to learn more. I mean at the basic level you'll find out a couple things but even so, the quality of information isn't great and the delivery on the videos isn't that great. If you take the course make sure you use the coupon because it's full price is criminal.

Matt is an easy to understand instructor and helped me get to know more about using GarageBand. The production quality is excellent. What I have learned so far is helping me spice up my music. It helps that I can go back to each video as I need to and refresh anything I get confused about. Informative and fun , Thanks Matt!

This course is great for a lot of different reasons. First off, the information given out is both well-prepared and also given out off the cuff. The fact that Matt is able to give off some examples and references off the cuff not only makes it sound less rehearsed and awkward, but also shows how truly knowledgeable he is about the topics he's presenting. Aside from being knowledgeable, he's confident, very genuine, and he clearly wants to help you succeed, even after you've finished his lecture. He's stated more than once in the lesson that he's willing to help out outside of the course itself. Matt also provides insight into aspects of music that help you learn more about how to hone your craft without being completely held down by teaching the program. Matt doesn't HAVE to teach you anything about music theory in helping you to use GarageBand, but he does and he also shows you with the use of popular examples that everyone can relate to (i.e. Don't Stop Believin' is in the Key of C). This is also a great course because this was my first experience with this website. I'm really interested in music, so I wanted to give this a shot. This course definitely gives me more trust in not just Matt's other videos but in udemy as a whole!

The lectures are broken down into bite-size pieces of information, so it is easy to grasp. This is helpful if you are new to a program like Garage Band, as I was. The instructor speaks clearly, is down-to-earth and has a friendly approach, so if you know nothing about music but want to be creative with it, the course is not intimidating and allows you to explore at your own pace. While I am an experienced musician, I knew nothing about using Garage Band and wanted to learn about it in a casual and fun way, which was accomplished. All the videos are screen shots of Garage Band on a Mac, so it is relatively easy to see where to click etc. In reading the discussion boards, it seems the instructor gets back to the students with answers to their questions fairly quickly, which is good.

I thought it was a great course overall. I am a beginner with learning music, and this instructor was very knowledgable. It was a little slow at times but you could tell he wanted to make sure everyone was getting it and understanding it. He is extremely detailed which I appreciated. There's so much that goes into garage band but the instructor made me feel like it was seamless. I want to keep going over this to make sure I retained everything because there is so much information but I'm so glad I have this course now! I feel like I can make music now!

By Ron Masa on 12/23/2014

I really enjoyed this course and it gave me a good working tour of what the program can do... which is Plenty. I also appreciate how responsive you were to people's concerns, adding several sections that really enriched the coverage for me. The looping exercise is Great and the music theory more interesting and helpful than I had expected. I will definitely get more out of this app than I would have without your class.
