Course Description
The views expressed in this course are the instructor's alone and do not reflect the official position of the U.S. Government, the Intelligence Community, or the Department of Defense.
Although anyone can claim the title of “intelligence analyst,” there are currently few commonly understood, standardized certifications available to confirm analytic skill and proficiency. Some may argue that each analytic assessment should be judged on its content and not on the certification or reputation of the author. However, an analytic product can often read well even though its analytic underpinnings are flawed. Also, it would be beneficial to have some objective measure of an analyst’s skill before selecting him for a task, rather than to discover afterwards that the analyst was unable to meet the task. Having addressed why certifications are needed and assuming certifications would provide a worthwhile benefit, the discussion then turns to how and in what areas should one attain certification. Through an analysis of the concept of analysis, the author proposes that three basic divisions should be created to train and certify one as either a descriptive, explanative, or predictive analyst. This course provides level 1 certification as a descriptive intelligence analyst.

It was okay. Many of the slides included inconsistencies or errors. The final exam wasn't hard, but some of the questions were confusing or poorly written. The "note" about not providing a certificate for a course titled "Level 1 Intel Analyst Certification" should have been provided up front.

I learned a lot in this course about how to think in general and how to think about evidence, as well as how to reframe problem statements. Highly recommend for anyone who needs to use logic as part of their work or study.

The information is good background and foundation for this topic. However the slides feel to me to be horribly dated. The clip art and excel tables copied in feel like a 90's time machine. Also the example of Serbs and ABC news crew further anchors this in the 90's. There was also a feeling that this is potentially a sales vehicle for the books being mentioned, even if those books are the ideal entry point into this field.

As someone who was an all-source analyst in the US Army, it is pretty wild to see a business claiming there are no standards for intelligence. Also, statements like "Humble, but confident" are for presentation, as in public speaking. This is not applicable to deliberate methodology of analytical thought, and muddies the concept of this module.
