What you will learn

  • 1. Write clean, correct C programs from scratch — and understand exactly what happens in memory when they run
  • 2. Master pointers step by step — pass by reference, pointer types, and how they map to hardware
  • 3. Pack, unpack, and manipulate data at the bit level using masks, shifts, and bitwise operators
  • 4. Model real-world hardware data with arrays, structures, and unions — and know their exact memory layout
  • 5. Convert fluently between binary, hex, and decimal — the number systems embedded engineers use daily
  • 6. Use the C preprocessor properly: #define macros, macros with arguments, and conditional compilation
  • 7. Explain the complete compilation pipeline — what the compiler, assembler, and linker each do to your code
  • 8. Choose the right data types and variables for memory-constrained embedded targets
  • 9. Build the exact C foundation needed for microcontroller work: GPIO, UART, and interrupts come next

Course Description

The C programming language is the foundation of every embedded systems role in the world. If you want to write firmware, understand how microcontrollers work, or break into embedded systems — this is the one skill you cannot skip.

This course teaches C the way it is actually used in embedded development: hands-on, visual, and with real code written in front of you. Every section follows a simple pattern — theory first, then a working program that proves it. No filler, no fluff.

Who this course is for: Whether you are a fresh engineering graduate, a hobbyist who has outgrown Arduino, or a software developer pivoting into embedded systems — this course was built for you. No prior embedded experience required. A basic comfort with computers is enough to begin.

What you will learn:

  • How data is stored in memory — RAM, addresses, binary, and hex — the foundation everything else builds on

  • C fundamentals: data types, variables, control flow, functions, and loops with live coding throughout

  • Pointers and memory — the most important (and feared) topic in C, explained visually and step by step

  • Arrays and structures — how to model real-world hardware data in C

  • The Embedded C essentials: volatile, bitwise operators, bit manipulation, and preprocessor directives

  • The complete C compilation pipeline — from source code to machine code, including what a linker actually does

How the course works: Every section builds on the last. We start with what an embedded system is and end with the compilation process that turns your C file into the binary that runs on a chip. Along the way, every concept gets a working program. You will spend more time reading and writing code than reading slides.

Any C compiler or IDE works — the course shows a free setup, and every example runs on plain gcc as well.

Free companion articles for every section are linked inside each lecture's resources.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Write clean, correct C programs from scratch

  • Understand how your code maps to memory and hardware

  • Read and use datasheets that reference registers, bit fields, and memory maps

  • Be fully prepared to move into a microcontroller-specific course with confidence

Updated based on learner feedback. Suitable for students and working professionals alike.

I was expecting more of a course on embedded C specifically. This course is however, in my opinion, more of a comprehensive beginner to intermediate course on the C language in general, and for that it was well done and a worthwhile course for anyone looking for such. Thanks.

Audio can be improved but the course is very clear and concise, I enjoyed it.

This course is very helpful for me to learning basic c in the embedded system, in this course all the points are well explained and there is one advice is when you take a new code that time you can't explain the process of how to create a new project or file so this one is a problem but otherwise this all things are better

By Gustavo A. Sanchez Rocha on 7/4/2023

The information was very good explained and the topics were excelently selected to understand the basics for embedded C.

By Nagaraju Potti on 5/22/2023

Is there a difference between 'C' and 'Embedded C' when it comes to RTOS implementation? The other four points are good in explaining the differences. Kindly, request for an answer. Thank you.

By Prakash M on 6/21/2022

This course is really helpful to understand the basics of embedded c. But this course covers only the programming. I would have been satisfied if the instructor had made a section for simple practical project using a microcontroller.

By Bojan Marković on 1/23/2022

Good. Sound can be better and there shouldn't be advancement in the course before submitting the solutions of the exercises. Solutions should be given upon request.

By Nicolau Nfinda Sebastiao on 2/6/2021

It was so good! I learned a lot of things that I had no idea before.

By Ivan Popyvanov on 9/30/2020

There is exist some good points. But this is not embedded , there is no practical examples related to embedded system. Somekind of greed is felt. Course not oriented to Embedded , this oriented only on a printf function. Hope that this Teacher will create in future more interesting course that will conatin real Practice with real Microcontrollers , Sensors , Buttons , Encoders , Screens and etc. Good Luck! In any cases I will waiting your next course related to MCU!

The course and the delivery is amazing. The instructor explains everything is smimple ways. I am really happy to have joined this course.
