Course Description
Have you ever used an app and found it intuitively easy to use? Do you remember the last time you had trouble getting a product to work, like when using a new piece of technology for the first time? Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a key skill for professionals who seek to engage customers, users, audiences, and subscribers with powerful, well-designed products and experiences that leave a lasting impact. In this course, you will learn to master the fundamentals of human-computer interaction by exploring user experience design and research with users to discover actionable insights and achieve better results. The course, designed by nationally recognized expert Professor Ray Lutzky, PhD, is an introduction for product designers, software engineers, and anyone who wants to create better experiences for their users. This course is adapted from graduate-level university courses in HCI, digital media management, interface design, and user experience design taught by Dr. Lutzky at Cornell University, New York University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Southern California. Topics include understanding affordances, ethics of user research, research techniques such as interviewing and usability testing, developing personas, persuasive technologies, wireframes, prototypes, and more. The course includes quizzes to assess learning at the end of each section, and activities to help you build your own user experiences through the application of techniques covered in the course, culminating in the design of your own user experience design plan.

As an experienced UI designer, I have encountered many eye-opening moments throughout my career. Despite achieving several successes in my past projects, I have come to realize the importance of grounding my work in established Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) principles, focusing on a structured approach to execution.

Role of research I've learned the value of qualitative and quantitative methods to gather insights about users, their behaviors, and their challenges. These insights inform every phase of the design process. Balancing Affordances and constraints HCI taught you how to strategically design elements that guide user behavior (affordances) while managing limitation (constraints) to prevent confusion or errors. Usability Testing Is Crucial Testing with real users revealed how small design changes can significantly impact user experience, reinforcing the importance of listening to feedback and adopting designs accordingly. Tools of the Trade From creating wireframe to building interactive prototypes, you've gained practical skills in using tools and frameworks that enhance collaboration and visualization of ideas.

It was very easy to follow. The explanation is sharp and straightforward. I'm currently learning Front-End Development as part of my career transition journey from Sales. Furthermore, I've been curious about HCI & seeking sources that can complement my desire to understand better of how to building a great product that users actually want, need & possible to build. This course is defintely a good start for me.

I feel the first assignment came to fast. and there were some terms like: "constraints", "common affordances" and some others, that i feel needed proper introduction. especially for those with no prior understanding of the subject.
