Mobile App Design: From Beginner to Intermediate (Udemy.com)

You'll master design in Sketch 4.0, prototype within Invision, and create specs and version control for your designs

Created by: Nicholas "Techustler" Ivanecky

Last updated February 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 144 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

A ten hour walkthrough of the classic mobile design toolchain: Sketch for the screens, InVision for click-through prototypes, Zeplin for handoff specs, and a short detour into Git for versioning design files. Nicholas Ivanecky, a product manager rather than a working designer, builds three projects on camera, from a warm-up screen to a social media app to a recreation of the PayPal iOS app, then closes with a section on landing a design job. It's aimed at people with no design software background who own a Mac, since Sketch does not run on Windows.

Reviewers mostly like the calm, plain delivery. One calls the videos short and understandable, and a four star review credits the course with getting them a lot better in Sketch. The complaints are consistent though. Low star reviews call the material outdated, note the instructor skips hot keys and repeats work he could have copied, and say the Git section never explains what the commands actually do. Two reviewers say the course looks under-prepared, with small mistakes throughout. One reviewer found the intro music on every video and the monotone voice hard to sit through. Another summed it up as good for basics but needing other materials to really understand.

The bigger issue is age. The syllabus shows Sketch 4.0 and classic InVision, and the last update was February 2017, so the interfaces on screen will not match what is installed today. The neighbouring InVision Studio courses cover the newer tool. Anyone who wants a cheap, gentle tour of the whole design-to-handoff workflow and can tolerate old menus will still get that here. People who need current tooling, or who learn better from a practising designer, should pick one of the Studio courses instead.

Best forMac owners with no design software experience who want one gentle course covering Sketch, prototyping, and handoff.
Skip it ifYou need current Sketch or InVision Studio interfaces, or you already know Sketch and want advanced UI work.

Pros

  • Covers the whole pipeline in one place: Sketch screens, InVision prototypes, Zeplin specs, and Git for design files
  • Three build-along projects, ending with a full recreation of the PayPal iOS app
  • Reviewers describe the teaching as calm, plain and easy to follow, with short videos
  • An hour-long closing section on portfolios and job hunting, including sample outreach emails

Cons

  • Last updated February 2017 and built on Sketch 4.0, so menus and InVision screens are out of date
  • Requires a Mac; Windows users are told to run an OS X virtual machine to follow along
  • Low-star reviews cite skipped hot keys, repeated work, small mistakes, a thin Git section and monotone delivery
Was really nice! You a real down-to earth guy and you can explain things very good. I felt comfortable watching your instructions and got a lot better in sketch! Thanks!

Labelled all levels, but the description targets beginners, and a three star review calls it basics that need other materials to complete.

Course Description

Update: Join over 8,200 students in the Techustler Course Series. You don’t want to miss this learning opportunity.

Have you ever wondered how those beautiful apps are made?

What are the best practices and tools currently used by designers?

How can I start my career in design?

If you ever wanted to understand the space of mobile design, then take my course "Mobile App Design: From Beginner to Intermediate". I created it in a practical way so that when you finish the content you can immediately put it to use in your product.

Now, why should you design mobile apps?

Today, advanced technology needs user friendly interfaces. Developers and non-technical folks want to make their applications more appealing and easy to use. There is a reason why so many people started to use Apple products, their design is their main product selling point. Going forward, people developing products need to make sure their users have that great experience.

Another great reason is lots of companies want to hire designers. This has been a growing trend recently where UI Designers in the US make upwards of $80,000 USD. With this course, I'll teach you the relevant tools to get your product designed well, build out your designer portfolio, and land that next job in design.

This course contains over 100 lectures and 10 hrs of content. It's designed for beginners to play with new software and get a grasp at the recent design trends. You’ll learn the tools and best practices needed to be a great designer. I also throw in bonus content on getting a designer job with techniques and sample emails.

Course Structure

The course follows a familiar structure where in each video I will teach the concepts followed by a challenge or practice question. If your goal is to become a better designer, you should understand design principles, other graphics softwares like Photoshop and build out a massive up-to-date portfolio. The course does go deep into understanding Sketch but you will need to get creative to build new UI experiences.

Environment Setup

This course aims to simulate a live in-person course as much as possible. After you finish each lecture, you should practice and try the solution on your own. You learn the best by practicing and doing.

Projects

At the end of each section, you will be asked to quizzes or be given a challenge. When you have finished a challenge you can then post it in the Udemy discussion board or your online portfolio.

giving details and focusing to outsource for UI design, but honestly, the course goes slow and sometimes it's hard to understand teacher what he said! What else, course give you good details which you need for future.

The course was fantastic! I learned lots of high-value stuff. Definitely worth it for anyone in the design field and anyone who wants to add more certifications to their resumé

Wasn't enough of explanation as to what git is, or how it's used or why. Would be useful to have a running glossary to what the git commands do or what the letters are short for. I still don't know what -m means for instance.

Feels like the author has not spent much time preparing for the course and/or running through the material him self before presenting it hence too many small mistakes which have become annoying after a while. Also, out of all the video streaming platforms, Udemy is the worst one in terms of video streaming. Just too many problems. Whenever I pause/resume the video, there is like 3-4 seconds lag were I can hear the audio but the video is frozen. After about 4-5 minutes of watching, the video will just freeze completely and I have to reload the whole page. The problems don't stop here however. In order to get back to the point I was before reloading the page (due to the video issue) I have to wait for like 1-3 minutes for the loading to finish. This is just crazy. It does not happen on any other site where I also play HD videos hence it is not an issue with my network/hardware. I think to ask for refund as it's becoming very difficult to continue watching the course.
