Course Description

MySQL Performance Tuning Online Course Curriculum:

MySQL Architecture

  • View the steps involved in Query Execution

  • How the Cient/Server Protocol affects MySQL

  • Understand how the Query Optimizer does its job

  • How the Storage Engine Layer makes MySQL unique

Finding Candidates for Query Optimizations

  • Making use of The Performance Schema, which is a gold mine for spotting querying for optimization because it allows us to measure where the time goes

  • Finding the few queries that are responsible for most of the load on the system. Checking to the top 1000 queries it’s usually not worth your time to optimize.

  • How to find the relevant information out of the plethora of performance views and metrics available in MySQL

  • Understand why UPDATE and DELETE statements are also reads even though they are primarily write statements. This will have an impact on I/O, and therefore to the response time.

Analyzing the Queries

  • Understand why MySQL creates a query plan, before each query request

  • How to read query plans, and understand how each of the underlying node types works on MySQL

  • A series of examples, to show how the EXPLAIN output can be used, to identify where MySQL spends time on your query, and why

  • Which are the important pieces of information, to look for in order to spot performance issues

The Clustered Index and Choosing the Primary Key

  • When we work with index-organized tables, as the ones in MySQL, the choice of the primary index, is very important.

  • We'll see how the primary key, can impact the amount of random, or sequential I/O, the size of secondary indexes, and how many pages need to be read into the buffer pool.

  • We're going to understand, why an optimal primary key, with respect to the clustered index, is as small (in bytes) as possible, keeps increasing monotonically, and groups the rows we query frequently, and within a short distance of each other.

Indexing for performance

  • Which are the main function of an index?

  • We'll see exactly which tables are in need for an index, and which tables are better without one.

  • We'll check how MySQL relies on statistics to choose the best index, and how we can help it to make better decisions.

Composite Indexes

  • Common mistakes of composite indexes

  • How to decide the order of columns for multicolumn indexes

  • Be able to reason through how indexes work, and to choose them based on that understanding, not on rules of thumb

  • Which are the use-cases, that make Redundant Indexes useful, and when to avoid them.

  • Work on some benchmarks, to check the actual performance in numbers.

MySQL Server Configurations

  • Check how we should approach MySQL configuration changes by considering some best practices, so that we can successfully tune MySQL.

  • Which are the three options that MySQL is most likely to benefit, from non-default values, and also how to set them.

  • Go through an overview of the data lifecycle in InnoDB, so that we have background knowledge when making configuration changes.

  • Adjust parameters that are important for certain use-cases, for example, buffer pool instances for high concurrent workloads, and how to make use of parallel execution for certain queries.

MySQL Transactions and Locks

  • Transactions are very important to ensure data integrity but when used wrong they can cause severe performance issues.

  • Get an overview of why locks are needed and some ways to reduce their impact.

  • How indexes, splitting the transaction and the isolation levels can help to reduce the number of locks

  • Monitoring options and what reporting tables to check to spot lock problems.

Introduction to Scaling MySQL

  • What it means to scale MySQL and, we'll walk through the different axes where we may need to scale.

  • Understand how to scale different kinds of loads

  • Replication and why we need to make use of Read-Pools, Health Checks, and Service Discovery

  • Which are the main concerns and pitfalls when deciding to Shard the database

  • How to partition data in MySQL

  • Which are the use-cases and advantages for using a Queue

  • Fundamental Concepts for Scaling Writes with Sharding

Content was good. The only downsides are a bit nitpicky. There are a few typos in the presentation/lectures. Also the presenters accent is a bit thick. I really had to pay a lot of attention and I found myself missing some points when I came to the questions. Besides that it was good. I really like how the course is broken up into short lectures which makes it easy to consume.

Great course. Dont be fooled by the small amount of hours in this course. It is packed with information every single second. Although this states it would only take a couple of hours to complete this actually took me several days. It helped to watch a video then go to explore the topic on a database so that you can get hands on experience with it. There so much data in here as well that I was able to create multiple pages of notes. Amazing course to gain a deep understand of MySQL and how to optimize your tables as well as queries.

It's easy to tell, based on its length, that this course is only an introduction to performance tuning. Based on the available preview videos for the course, you can also tell that the instructor is not a native English speaker, and his accent sometimes makes it hard to hear what he's saying. So I'm not factoring those in, rating this course. I liked that the lectures are short, and usually (if not always) followed by one or more quiz questions (but quite often, the questions are easy to the point that they are silly). I found the lectures to be quite interesting, but your mileage may vary. I may be wrong, but I think that on occasion the instructor says the exact opposite of what he intends to say. However, the biggest minus of this course (which you can't tell without access to the Q&A section of the course), is that the instructor doesn't respond to questions -- his latest response is of "1 year ago". All in all, for the discounted price it is a decent course, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.

This course has taught me a lot of things concerning SQL performance on MySQL/MariaDB. Not everything is applicable to MariaDB, but a lot of it is. This course will not provide you with a simple answer to the question ‘What can I do to enhance the performance of my application’, but it will teach you the tools that are available to do so.

The content of the Course is excellent, thats the most important thing to me, however, in my case, I had to go back or stop the lessons because: First, the pronunciation is not very good, but acceptable, the subtitles leave a lot to be desired throughout the course, I did not see a well-written "MySQL", or it was "mi skill", "eskel", etc... that only tells me that nobody cares the hassle of reviewing the engine that generates the subtitles, let alone giving the speaker the ability to review them.

This was a decent high level look at MySQL performance optimizations and some common issues you run into. I wish it had included an example project where you applied the techniques as you learned about them. The quizzes were too frequent and too short to be of much use though, and mainly asked about something you heard in the last minute, I'd ignore them and go through them at the end.

Very hands-on and pragmatic. Useful as a warm-up, or for learning re-learning the dry textbook-level, academic body of knowledge about transactions, query optimization, physical data organization and so on. I took a lot of notes, and copied queries for taking a look under the MySQL hood. Now I know better where to look when there are performance problems. Another plus is that the author spent quite some effort to create a mini-quiz after almost each short video. (On Udemy Course quizzes are uncommon, unlike other MOOC platforms). I had some problems with some of the explanations, but it doesn't matter, considering these quizzes are learning aids - they do not decide over the course of participants' careers. The examples are for MySQL 8, but can be transformed to MySQL 5 with little effort, or just used 1:1,

Its a hard subject to get to grips with however this course shows why indexing is so important and leaves you thinking you have the ability to take this much further quickly, the instructors great experience is being matched by his ability to convey it in a manner that can be picked up by those much less experience quickly!

Course is very knowledgeable and insightful. But there are few issues, if rectified then it will be really good. Issues faced are mentioned below: 1. Captions are not properly transliterated, very confusing for some key words 2. Many videos don't have visuals and audio after a certain time 3. Many descriptions are not available for query shown in the videos
