Our take
Based on the ratings of 16,588 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
Kyle Pew's course is a short, tidy introduction to SQL using MySQL and MySQL Workbench. The syllabus shows 59 lectures across 12 sections, about 3 hours of video, 8 quizzes and a single lab. It starts with installing MySQL, then walks through SELECT, WHERE filtering, sorting, GROUP BY with HAVING, creating a database and tables, inserting records, and finally joins across related tables. It is aimed at people who have never touched a database. Around 51,000 students have enrolled, the course was refreshed in December 2025, and one 2026 reviewer worked through it on MySQL Community 9.2.
Reviewers keep using the same words: short, crisp, easy to follow. Students like that the videos are brief, that there is sample data to practice on, and that Pew is candid and a bit funny about himself. The sections on joins and aggregation get singled out as the strongest. One reviewer who could not install software at work praised the built-in lab environment and wished it were used more often. The caveat, raised even in a five-star review, is depth. It is not an advanced course; it covers the basics and stops. One student finished still unsure what SQL was for in day-to-day work, which says the course is light on real-world context.
At 4.6 stars from about 16,600 reviews, with 93 percent giving four or five stars, this is one of the safer beginner picks in the MySQL category. It is deliberately compact, which is the point: you get the vocabulary and the habits in an afternoon, then move on. There are no coding exercises, only quizzes and one lab, so expect to set up your own practice. Recommended as a first step, not a last one.
Pros
- About 3 hours total, split into short lectures reviewers say suit a limited attention span
- Quizzes after each section plus a lab environment, useful if you cannot install software at work
- Joins and GROUP BY sections get singled out as the strongest material
- Updated December 2025; one 2026 reviewer completed it on MySQL Community 9.2 with Workbench
Cons
- Stops at the basics: no subqueries, window functions, indexes or performance topics
- Only one lab and no coding exercises, so hands-on practice is thin
- Light on real-world context; one reviewer finished unsure what to use SQL for
This course breaks down the fundamentals of SQL in an absolute compact and easy-to-understand way. In just 3 hours, it covers everything important without any unnecessary fluff.
Genuinely beginner: no database experience assumed, and the 3-hour length means it never gets past the fundamentals.

Course Description
LEARN SQL WITH MySQL
In order to make intelligent business decisions you need the proper data. In order to get the proper data you will need to communicate with and query data within a database. This is where SQL comes into play. SQL stands for Structured Query Language. It's the language used to communicate with a database and more importantly the data needed to make intelligent decisions that will save time and money.
WHY THIS COURSE
This SQL course starts with the absolute basic building blocks necessary to communicate effectively with any database. You'll learn how to query and manage a database using MySQL. MySQL is a free open-source relational database management system (RDBMS), used by many of the world's largest organizations.
Each section of the course will focus on a key topic of working with SQL. The video lectures have been created so you can follow along as the instructor demonstrates each concept. At the end of each section you can test your understanding through a section quiz and exercise. Once you complete a section the next section will build on the topics of the previous section. This encourages your learning as you build upon the knowledge you learn as you move from one section to the next.
This course is not just a sit back and watch the instructor type on the screen kind of course. The lectures and course flow has been designed to help you engage in the topic and participate by writing your own SQL. The TRUE LEARNING happens when you apply what you're learning and try it yourself.
The course also contains downloadable resources you can use away from the course as you continue to learn SQL. The QA board found within the course offers you the opportunity to ask questions and get answers from the instructor and interact with the other students enrolled in the course.

This was a really good course introducing SQL to someone who had no idea what it was. I still don't understand the practical use for it as I was trying to see how I could implement what I learned in this course into my daily tasks at work. And I'm still unsure of what I would ever use SQL for

I did not know anything about SQL. I had never even thought that I would learn the fundamentals so easily in a world full of complex and marketing oriented courses. Thanks a lot. Spending money and time on this course was worth it,

This course is great if you are completely new to SQL or if you want a refresher into the fundamentals of MySQL/SQL. I have taken other “beginner” courses that get into the weeds with far too many confusing explanations. Kyle does a great job at keeping it simple, helping you understand the basics and giving you real world examples of doing basic querying.
