Emilio Padulo

Greetings

My name is Emilio Padulo and I am an Senior Tokenomics / Game Economist at Animoca Brands

Ever since I was young I have always been interested in creating games; whether it was inventing RPG games with my sister, creating huge Lego worlds with story-driven adventures or building Excel spreadsheets for Diablo. From childhood my path has always been clear - I would work in the video game industry one way or another.

During my adult years, I continued on this path and obtained two degrees, one in Marketing and another in Game and Level Design. In the course of my degrees, I delved into many theories heavy topics about Game Design & Development such as; the Freemium business model, gamification, analyzing KPIs for optimization, level design, color psychology - just to name a few.

There has been a lot of trial and error in my own personal approaches which are errors I want others to avoid hence why I've started creating these courses to help developers new to the industry to not make the same mistakes I, and many others have done.

I cannot wait to share all that I have learned with you so that you too can become a great game developer in no time. So start now, and take a look at some of the courses I offer. If you have any questions - feel free to reach out!

As a complete beginner to narrative design, I've learnt quite a lot from this course. The quality of the material is varying though, both in terms of content of the slide and audio. Some sections like character design and world building could be expanded considerably, and overall the course would benefit from much more practical exercises to use what is covered. There are some assignments, but these are sparse and not really applying most of what is covered. Character psychology takes up almost half of the character development section and is dedicated to the pseudo-scientific 16 archetypes, which I find are not super useful. One shortcoming of most sections that lessons are relatively short and often contain a lot of questions that are read from script. It would be much better to show how to e.g., develop a character step-by-step, and complement many of the lessons with corresponding exercises.

I was really excited when I found this course, the table of contents looked legit and everything in place. Unfortunaltelly, as per my understanding it was not delivered. This is not a Master Class - there are not enough examples, not enough dive into particular sections. The videos were not entertaining and not clearly explained - teacher could have done much better job as it looks like he has a lot of knowledge and experiance. Each section has slides, with a lot of text, which the autor is reading... I managed to take some good output from the course, but stil think Emilio could have done much better job.

The course was an excellent choice! The assignments were interesting and fun. I learned a lot about world building and what narrative designer have to focus on. The course author readily answered a question of mine and the lecture about how to build a portfolio is really helpful for beginners! Thank you.

The course delivers the fundamentals and tools that are quite crucial when it comes to narrative design that I have lacked, specifically in the world-building section. The feedback given by the instructor makes sense and is well informed. Could use more exercises to keep the muscle of creation rolling The course in my opinion lacks the info or tools to give complete newbies, those who are without portfolios or "industry experience" get really started from scratch in the industry.

My passion is to become a game director / designer but I took a different IT course in university which are not game industry focused. This course helps me to be inspired and show me the know-how in writing stories and how to be a narrative design.

I still have 2 assignments left to complete and finished all the lectures. I really like the way the instructor set up the class. It feels much more like a hands-on, interactive class than many here. Students can review and comment on each other's work, something I was hesitant about, but it actually turned out great. The instructor offered insights and advice that I would have never thought of myself, nor found in other writing courses. This course is indeed highly specific to writing to the video game genre, and he shares his real world experience with us about the industry. I took this class, not to get a job in the gaming industry, but to aid in writing for my own indie game I am developing. Still, this course did not disappoint. Aside from the last few bonus classes about getting a job, the course was quite relevant to what I was seeking, and I am coming out of it feeling inspired and ready to finish my project.

Such great examples and breakdown of all aspects of the game design process. Would highly recommend for folks that are building a game on their own or with a small team (that’s the category I fall into at least). Also, 90% of this I listened to while running or driving. Visuals are great but you can also listen to this more like a podcast. Love all of the questions and really gets the creative side of the mind going. I’ll be going back and rewatching this throughout my game design and development.

I feel like this course really takes you to the actual world and what it's really like in the industry. And what I like most about this course is the feed back. In other courses, to have this kind of interaction you have to pay a big chunk. But in here, it's already included. And Emilio does check the assignment thoroughly and gives detailed and helpful comments.

By Andrew Oldham on 6/8/2020

The teacher is knowledgeable and skilled on the topics. He teaches a more practical approach to narrative design than most who tend to stick to storytelling theory. A real insider's insight into the professional side of the industry. Would definitely recommend this class to others. However I do have some issues with the videos. Namely that the instructors sentence structures when communicating in English, his 2nd language to be fair, are choppy and can be difficult to understand. Had to watch the videos 2 or 3 times to follow his reasoning. Also less than a hand full of his videos have editing mistakes where he forgot edit out flubbed lines. Very disorientating. Otherwise a worthwhile class.

This course was exactly what I needed. As I said before, I have some experience in narrative design and writing, but it is quite one-sided. And that's why I wanted not to deepen but to widen it: learn how narrative is designed in other companies and in Western studios in general, what in my current job is wrong and what is correct. As the only writer in my current studio I can't also evaluate my own job - and this course helped me again. Finally, the "Breaking into the industry" part was probably one of the most helpful because it showed me international standarts of application stuff. Thank you Emilio - and see ya :)
