Our take

Based on the ratings of 298 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a project course: build a serverless blog with Next.js and Sanity's headless CMS, then ship it on Vercel. Filip Jerga walks through project setup, modeling blog and author documents in Sanity Studio, fetching and styling content, adding pagination and sorting, a light/dark theme, and a preview mode for drafts. At 13.1 hours across 84 lectures, it assumes basic JS and some React, and the syllabus backs that up with a dedicated deployment section rather than a quick throwaway demo.

Reviewers like the pacing: Jerga breaks concepts down and explains what's happening as he debugs, and several mention the course GitHub repo is well organized and easy to follow along with. A few call out real support during earlier runs, quick answers to questions. The complaints cluster in a few places. Jerga's accent trips some students up early on, and the auto-generated transcript doesn't help. One reviewer also found support had gone quiet, no reply to a posted question. More seriously, the course has aged: one reviewer hit dependency version conflicts that added debugging pain, and reviewers from 2024 and 2025 go further, calling it outdated for anyone starting today.

The material was last refreshed in February 2022, and it shows in the recent one and two star reviews, both explicitly calling it outdated for anyone starting fresh now. The blog project itself stays basic too, no localization, no complex data relationships, so it's a solid intro to wiring Next.js to a headless CMS rather than a blueprint for a production content site. Worth it if you want the Sanity fundamentals and don't mind patching version mismatches yourself; skip it if you need something current out of the box.

Best forDevelopers with basic React who want to pair Next.js with a headless CMS and deploy it live.
Skip it ifYou need current Next.js practices out of the box or multi-language content support.

Pros

  • Step-by-step explanations that walk through why, not just what to type
  • Course GitHub repo is well organized and easy to follow along with
  • Covers real deployment to Vercel with static optimization, not just local dev
  • Later update section adds newer hooks like useSWRInfinite

Cons

  • Last updated February 2022; recent reviewers call it outdated now
  • Dependency version conflicts mean extra debugging just to get set up
  • No localization or i18n support, and the demo blog project stays fairly basic

Listed as All Levels, but it really suits developers who already know basic React, not total beginners.

Course Description

What is Sanity?

Sanity is the platform for structured content. With Sanity, you can manage your text, images, and other media with APIs. You can also use the open-source single-page application Sanity Studio to set up an editing environment that you can customize quickly. With Sanity, you have access to many APIs, libraries, and tools that helps you leverage the benefits of having all your content available as a single source of truth. This article will quickly walk you through some central concepts, giving you a head start.

What is Next JS?

Next, JS is React framework that provides infrastructure and simple development experience for server-side rendered(SSR) applications.

  • An intuitive page-based routing system (with support for dynamic routes)

  • Pre-rendering, both static generation (SSG) and server-side rendering (SSR) are supported on a per-page basis

About the main project

We will start with integrating an immaculate application layout I have prepared for you. We will follow the latest practices of React and Next JS. This means we will utilize hook functions as much as possible.

After the initial layout and pages are created, we will start preparing actual data in Sanity Studio. I will explain to you the basics of Sanity, and we will prepare two types of documents - Blogs and Authors.

We will specify various fields describing our data, for example, "Code Blocks," "Images," and many others.

After data is fetched, we will display blogs on our application pages. You will learn how to process images and apply stylings to code blocks.

Later in the course, you will learn how to apply different filtering options to the application view, paginate items, and manage to sort the data. You will learn how to use the provider and consumer/concept, which we will use to control our application's light and dark theme.

Next, we will talk about the Preview feature. The preview feature will allow it to display draft blog data before they are published into production.

We will deploy our application into the Vercel platform at the end of the course. The application will be statically optimized and super fast.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to see you in the course.

The slug field should be generated from the title by default. There’s a lack of localization support for Sanity posts in Next.js, and I’d like to see specifically how Sanity works with languages (i18n etc) and what configuration/settings are required.

Excelente curso, abarcó muchos temas que se me hacen escenciales para el buen uso de next y sanity. Sólo me gustaría que se actualizaran algunas librerías ya que al parecer tiene algunos años que se hizo el curso. Saludos.

The instructor is very knowledgeable and organised and delivers the lectures with empathy and understanding. This course has helped me a lot in understanding many concepts and manage better my work tasks.

By Tiffany Runsewe on 12/16/2021

This course is quite good and I like it at the beginning, the instructour added some practical way to add nextJs with the sanity cms, however, there are lot of things missing like no translation, the blog project is very basic. Therefore, if you have more complex project, then, you'll have an issue since you don't know how to apply it with sanity, also the instructour at the beginning saying if you have an issue, then, you just send question to his email or comment udemy, however, there's no any reply for your questions, so expect that you walk by yourself if you purchase this course. I would change my rating if the instructour update the course adding more features, translation, ways to get all blogs events etc, but for now it's average at best.

I am really enjoying the course. Filip breaks the concepts down into simple steps with excellent explanations. I'm learning a whole lot and if I was pressed for areas of improvements, I'd say his accent can be difficult to understand at times, especially near the beginning of the course. Unfortunately, the transcript doesn't help because its auto-dictate functionality isn't capturing the words well.

By Geoff B on 12/16/2020

It can be difficult to understand Filip at times. Some things are breezed over too fast without an explanation.

By Janelle Tamayo on 10/22/2020

This course was amazing. I got to learn headless CMS with Sanity.io. Filip's videos were easy for my brain to handle. I learned new techniques from this course such as the use of debugger, getStaticProps, getServerSideProps. The deployment to Vercel was easy and the errors were addressed. I am satisfied with this! Filip also replies to questions as soon as possible!

A fantastic course! I enjoyed this course so much. A perfect mixture of everything. A well-chosen project, which is - by the way - looking great. I never felt so relaxed and entertained during I was coding along a course, and sure I learned a lot of nice things. Two lessons before I finalized this course, I bought another course from Filip. I've to admit I'm now addicted to his manner of teaching. He is very supportive and he is answering rapidly to questions. Filip, thank you for everything!

By Mila Borowik on 6/27/2020

Once again amazing course from Filip. Never heard about Sanity before but this course has explained all of the necessary knowledge straight away! Can not wait to progress with the course more!
