Course Description
Death, Grief and Healing
This course is designed for learners who want a serious, reflective, and continually developing study of grief, bereavement, and healing. It differs from more static online courses in that it continues to grow over time, with additional lectures, case studies, and resources being added, alongside a high level of instructor presence and active encouragement of student participation.
The course is intended not only for those with a personal or professional interest in grief, but also for learners in related fields such as business, management, leadership, human resources, organisational behaviour, coaching, education, and the helping professions.
A particular strength of the course is its recognition that grief is not only a personal or clinical issue. It is also a workplace issue, a communication issue, a leadership issue, and a matter of organisational culture. For that reason, the course may be of special interest to business students seeking to understand how bereavement and other forms of loss affect individuals, teams, and professional environments.
In organisational settings, grief may influence concentration, judgement, motivation, attendance, confidence, interpersonal communication, decision-making, and overall performance. It may also affect team morale, role expectations, boundaries, psychological safety, and the capacity of managers and colleagues to respond appropriately. Yet these issues are often underexplored in traditional business education. This course addresses that gap by including material that examines grief both as a deeply human experience and as a significant factor in workplace life.
Topics of particular relevance to business students
Added in May 2026, these topics include:
understanding grief at work
how loss affects focus, energy, and performance
common myths about grief in professional settings
what managers should say to a grieving employee
what managers should avoid saying or doing
how to support a bereaved colleague respectfully
grief, communication, and team dynamics
returning to work after bereavement
managing deadlines and workload during grief
creating boundaries while grieving at work
how HR and leaders can build grief-sensitive policies

remote and hybrid support for grieving employees
cultural differences in grief and mourning
ambiguous loss and non-death grief in the workplace
healthy coping strategies during the workday
recognising when someone needs extra support
healing, meaning, and long-term adjustment after loss
These topics make the course relevant to the study of:
leadership and management
workplace communication
emotional intelligence
employee wellbeing
organisational behaviour
professional ethics
human resource management
team dynamics and culture
Course approach
Throughout the course, the emphasis is on careful, self-paced engagement. Learners are encouraged to proceed slowly, reflectively, and thoughtfully, considering what they are seeing, hearing, and feeling. The Q&A area is presented not simply as a technical support space, but as an opportunity for reflective engagement, discussion, comment, and shared learning.
The course combines personal reflection with professional and educational relevance. It includes theoretical, practical, and experiential elements, making it suitable for learners who want to explore grief not only as a personal process but also as a subject with broader social, cultural, and organisational implications.

AI summary of 126 reviews:
The reviews highlight the detailed and resource-rich nature of the course, with learners appreciating the thorough instruction, reflective questions, and well-structured materials that facilitate self-paced progress and deeper engagement.
Resources included
The course includes:
three detailed workbooks/journals
numerous additional resources
a Handbook on Death, Grief and Healing
Important note
Because of the subject matter, some parts of this course may be emotionally challenging. The material addresses death, grief, bereavement, and loss in direct ways, and some learners may find aspects of it distressing. However, the course is not concerned with death alone. As the title indicates, it is equally concerned with grief and healing, and its overall purpose is to support understanding, reflection, and movement towards healing.
Meditations are included, along with opportunities for independent reflection and further personal investigation.

The Oxford Diploma: Death, Grief, Healing in Depth is one of the most comprehensive and emotionally insightful courses available for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of grief, bereavement, and the healing process. What makes this course stand out is its balance between psychological knowledge, practical grief support techniques, real-life case studies, and personal reflection. Rather than treating grief as a purely academic subject, the course explores the human experience of loss with compassion, depth, and sensitivity. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics including bereavement counseling, emotional resilience, distress tolerance, end-of-life issues, grief across different age groups, cultural perspectives on death, and practical approaches to supporting individuals through loss. The inclusion of workbooks, reflective exercises, case studies, and guided discussions creates a learning experience that goes beyond theory and encourages genuine personal and professional growth. One of the strongest aspects of the program is its emphasis on healing rather than simply studying grief. The course acknowledges the complexity of loss while providing meaningful tools that can help both professionals and individuals navigate difficult emotional experiences. This diploma is highly valuable for counselors, coaches, healthcare professionals, social workers, caregivers, and anyone interested in understanding the psychological and emotional dimensions of grief. It is also suitable for those who have experienced personal loss and wish to gain deeper insight into the healing journey. Overall, the Oxford Diploma: Death, Grief, Healing in Depth offers a rich, thoughtful, and deeply human exploration of one of life's most challenging experiences. It is a course that not only educates but also encourages empathy, reflection, and meaningful personal development.

This course offers a lot of materials and resources. It gives us a lot of perspective on the subject, a lot of ideas and thoughts. It is creatively design and it's very clear that the course designer & instructor is very passionate and dedicated and wants to give as much as possible for the students. (My notes on this course is 352 pages). I highly recommend this course. However, this course can be made shorter and is still as effective/useful. Because aside from absolute return, we should also consider the rate of return on time/effort invested by the student. 753 videos are a bit too much for most people. A profit of $100 is good if you invested $500. but is not so good if you have to invest $100,000,-

At first glance this course seemed interesting, and the instructor’s attitude in the first video actually captivated me and made me want to start the course. As I progressed through the lectures, however, I gradually lost interest. Some of the resources look like they were created with ChatGPT. I’ve been using ChatGPT daily since it was released, so the style is very recognisable. That doesn’t necessarily make the content wrong, but it does make the material feel less original. I also think the expectation that students will use threads flawlessly is a bit unrealistic. A course that has been running for nine years, with 700+ lectures and thousands of students, is naturally going to feel complex and difficult to navigate. Even with explanations, it can still feel messy. One suggestion would be to move the YouTube video explaining the thread system earlier in the course instead of placing it after several case studies. Finally, the size of the course feels overwhelming. Since I’m not interested in the diploma, I will probably only complete the lectures that are most relevant to me. If someone is looking for formal accreditation in grief and loss, there may be more structured routes than this course. This review is based on the first 18 lectures and some trends I’ve already noticed. My opinion may change if I continue further, and I may adjust my rating later.

I am taking this course to help myself walking to the path of grieving. since 2010 I have experimenting loss after loss and the grieving process for me has been very difficult, because in top of a loss and the accompanying grieving, there comes another and another and so on. Also I will like to use everything I learned to help people near me with their grieving process English is not my primary language, so please excuse any error in my postulate. Thanks for having me here.

The mix of videos of an actual person, readings, discussion questions, and q&a postings make it feel that I am in class (only that it's not in person/face to face). The discussion questions really makes me process and challenges the way I think. At times, I stare at the screen trying to gather my thoughts for a long time. And this is good, because in this age of AI, alot of things can just be read in the internet. Initially my goal was to finish fast and apply it right away, but now it is to take time and absorb the lessons.

This course is absolutely extraordinary. I have personally gone through a fifteen-year period of constant losses and a profound shattering of my own identity, which I had to rebuild completely from scratch. Today, I work as a grief coach, and I can say that topics like compounded grief and loss of self are handled here with incredible depth and respect. The course perfectly and authentically shows that healing and grieving cannot be rushed. An invaluable and highly thought-provoking resource that I highly recommend!

Honestly, I haven't journeyed far enough yet to make any assumptions about the course. One thing I noticed is that most of the course work I have come across so far is UK based. I am wondering is the certificate at the end only effective for those based in the UK? I am not really sure as I am in the US. So far I did get excited about the prompts for art journaling. I think there are some pretty great prompts there.

As someone who wants to get DEEP into everything that makes other people uncomfortable I THROUGHLY appreciate this instructors enthusiasm on this topic! I have taken other courses here that feel like they drag on and my ADHD brain quickly looks for another form of stimulation. But between the mindful background music to the scenery to the context where things are said, I'm finding it easy to stay engaged. I just started the course yesterday and am already loving the emphasis on mental health and being consciously aware of how we are BEing through the lectures.

My involvement in this course was more than just about learning. For me, it was mainly a journey—an experience. During the almost six months I spent on this course, I not only acquired a lot of knowledge but also became part of a worldwide community that was keen to understand significant topics about death and grief. At the same time, I must say that it wasn’t just a dry and purely academic course. Chris is an excellent instructor, deeply dedicated to what he does. He emphasizes interaction and communication, and his approach makes you feel like you’ve known him for years. He is direct, engaging, and knows how to make you feel like a member of the community, which is what open and distance education is all about. Though I was enrolled from a distance, Chris, through his experiential and immediate videos, as well as his tours of the Oxford landscape during class time, gave me the impression that I was there with him. His warm and empathetic voice made the course feel very personal. I didn’t feel like he was teaching me; rather, he made me feel as though he was entrusting me with important knowledge about life, love, death, loss, and bereavement—valuable insights that flowed effortlessly from his rich experience. The course was "open" in the sense that it wasn't set in stone; it kept evolving and improving. I frequently revisited certain sections because there was always something fresh and exciting added. Many of the new ideas came from my discussions with Chris, which made me feel like I was contributing to the course's development. This made me feel that my ideas mattered and that I had something worthwhile to contribute. Chris encouraged me to be fully involved, and I felt like I was really learning something new, valuable, and interesting. Overall, this course was the best thing I did this year. I not only learned new things and made a new educational friend, but the course also helped me understand my emotions better and think about my own experiences with loss and grief. The exercises that accompany the course are experiential, and if you perform them, you’ll find yourself changing, growing, and evolving in a beautiful way. The art therapy exercises where also unique and inspiring. Although I am not much of a painter, though these exercises, I was able to channel my creativity in video and I was able to create some nice videos through this course. This course looks at death and grief in a comprehensive and multi-faceted way. It covers all parts of the topic and gives clear advice on dealing with grief in different situations (like losing a child, spouse, pet, etc.). While the course goes into great detail on these subjects, its main strength is its ability to help you understand your own feelings and encourage deep thinking about the case studies in the exercises, all while increasing your ability to empathize with others. Through Chris’s thoughtful narration, I was also introduced to a world I didn’t know existed. With his words, Chris was able to speak to my heart about people long gone, like Peter Thomas. His love for Peter Thomas and for the course’s contributors who have passed away truly demonstrates the essence of the course: that love —whether for oneself, for others, for healthy living, for meditation, for gratitude, or for forgiveness— is the only way to overcome death and endure grief. These are the benefits of the course. To achieve this level, you need determination, patience, self-control, and active participation, but the hard work is definitely worth it. I am very thankful for this course, for getting to know Chris, and for this wonderful experience.

I have enjoyed taking this course. I found it very relevant for me as it helped me do some of my personal grief work having lost my beloved spouse in December 2018. The content has been relevant for especially on how to prevent early death, how to prepare for death and how to support those dying or who have lost a loved one. For me, i never really thought much of death as a reality until my husband was battling cancer and given a very poor prognosis. I particularly liked the tips on how to go one living when a loved one has passed and how to positively handle and go through grief. The resources given out as workbooks and handouts are a great boost to the knowledge being taught in the course. I liked that some content on COVID has been added too. This makes the course even more relevant given that this is something that has affected almost each of one us and as Grief Counselors in this moment, we are better equipped to help those grieving as a result of COVID. Thank you for the passion and dedication put into this course.
