Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,953 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Chris Sivewright's economics course is less a tidy lecture series than a long, running class. It has 609 lectures in 47 sections, about 55 hours of video, plus 163 articles, and it was last updated in August 2026. Micro and macro are in there, but so are units on war, green economics, crime and social media brain rot. He lists more than 40 years of teaching and an Oxford background. The course is really for people who will read, research and post in the Q&A, not for those who want to sit back and watch.

Reviewers like the pace and the way he speaks, and one says the instructions and expectations are clear. Another calls it practical rather than theoretical and says they already feel like an economist. A reader who works in the industry uses it as a refresher. The complaints are about workload and format. The one-star review says it is not for beginners, leans on outside links and videos, and has dull slides. That reviewer also felt scolded at times. The section titles back some of this up: many are labeled MISC, and there are doodling units not everyone will want.

The rating is 4.4 from 1,953 reviews, and about 18,000 students have enrolled, so most reviewers seem happy. Still, 84 of those ratings are one or two stars. It suits someone who wants to follow economics as it happens and is fine doing homework. If you need a clean, exam-style run of microeconomics then macroeconomics, the loose structure may frustrate. Total beginners should start with the section the course flags for them and expect to put in real effort.

Best forSelf-motivated learners who want economics tied to current events and will join the Q&A discussions.
Skip it ifYou want a short, tidy micro and macro sequence with polished slides and no required homework.

Pros

  • Keeps growing: last updated August 2026 with units on war and green economics
  • Reviewers like the instructor's pace, his clear speech and clear expectations
  • Practical, discussion-led approach; one reviewer calls it not theoretical at all
  • 609 lectures and about 55 hours cover micro, macro, trade and policy

Cons

  • Heavy workload and outside research; the lowest reviewer found it too much as a beginner
  • Loose structure, with many sections labeled MISC and some off-topic doodling units
  • Slides described as dull, with heavy reliance on external links and videos
The course is not theoritical at all fully practical, I already feel like a economist analyzing things a lot.
sipicelic gamer, a student

Listed for all levels, but a reviewer warns beginners the workload is heavy and it expects reading and posting.

Course Description

Economics is not a subject that should be taught through a static, outdated course. If you want a course that is current, intellectually serious, highly interactive, and taught with strong instructor involvement, this is designed for you.

The economy does not stand still — and neither should an economics course. This course is updated several times each month with new lectures, exercises, case studies, and regular educational announcements, so you are not simply enrolling on a fixed set of videos. You are joining a course that continues to develop in response to major real-world economic events and debates.

What makes this course different is simple: it is active.

Most online courses are uploaded once and then left alone. This one is not. Here, students are encouraged to participate, research, think independently, and engage in discussion, while benefiting from a high level of instructor involvement. Questions are answered, student work is discussed, and the course grows over time.

Recent learner feedback has praised the course for its clear, thoughtful, and non-ideological approach to economics, with an emphasis on real-world developments, engaging exercises, useful reading, and independent thinking. The aim is not passive viewing. The aim is to help you understand economics properly, apply it to the world around you, and strengthen your ability to think critically.

Why students learn well on this course

The best way to learn economics online is through a combination of:

  • clear video lectures

  • discussion and debate

  • case studies

  • quizzes and exercises

  • research tasks

  • active instructor support

That is exactly how this course is built.

Inside the course you will find:

  • Hundreds of lectures

  • Regularly updated content

  • Frequent educational announcements

  • Case studies and discussion-based learning

  • Quizzes and multiple-choice exercises

  • Research-based homework

  • A highly active Q&A

  • Strong and ongoing instructor engagement

The Q&A is especially important.

Many courses claim to be interactive, but very few genuinely are. In this course, there are 8,000+ posts where students share ideas, respond to exercises, discuss case studies, and test their understanding of economic issues. That matters because economics is not learned well through passive watching alone. It is learned through doing, questioning, researching, discussing, and refining your thinking.

Students here learn by:

  • doing the work

  • following real economic developments

  • researching beyond the lectures

  • sharing ideas

  • having their reasoning challenged and improved

This takes time and effort — from both you and the instructor — but that is precisely why the learning experience is so much stronger.

What you will study

This course covers economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, business economics, and global economics, while continually connecting theory to current events and policy debates.

Recent additions include topics such as:

  • trade balances, current accounts, and bilateral deficit narratives

  • gains from trade, tariffs, retaliation, and trade war dynamics

  • elasticity, substitution effects, trade diversion, and exchange rates

  • inflation transmission from trade policy and policy uncertainty

  • climate externalities, climate risk, resilience finance, and insurance withdrawal

  • energy market design, reliability, storage economics, and electricity demand

  • AI, productivity, automation, labour markets, bargaining power, and job polarisation

  • competition policy, rent concentration, and the changing balance between labour and capital

  • economic statecraft, sanctions, deterrence, signalling, and strategic interaction

  • structured finance, risk allocation, information asymmetry, and liquidity

  • agglomeration economies, FDI, industrial policy, institutions, and political legitimacy

The course also includes case studies on artificial intelligence, autonomy, critical thinking, inequality, education, governance, ethics, and economic power, helping students understand not only economic theory, but also the broader structural changes shaping the modern world.

Who this course is for

This course is for you if you want:

  • a serious introduction to economics or a deeper understanding of it

  • a course that connects theory to current events

  • regularly updated material rather than static content

  • meaningful instructor engagement

  • discussion, exercises, and case-based learning

  • a thoughtful, balanced, and non-ideological approach

  • to build a strong understanding of economics, macroeconomics, and microeconomics in a practical way

Before you enrol

If you are looking for a short course to play in the background and finish quickly, this may not be the right fit.

But if you want a course that is current, rigorous, interactive, and genuinely taught, with regular updates and real instructor involvement, then this course is for you.

Come prepared to think, research, participate, and improve.
If you do, you will learn economics as it should be learned: actively, seriously, and in close connection with the real world.

This course is not for beginners. Despite reading reviews about the heavy workload, I purchased it thinking I could keep up. However, I simply couldn’t; it requires a massive amount of time and outside research. The slides and fonts are dull, and the material relies too heavily on external links and videos and we needed add our commentary under the chapter. I wasn’t interested in the discussion-heavy format; I just wanted to understand the concepts. The instructor treats students like college kids, often slipping into a 'complaining mode' that made me feel like I was being scolded and wasting his time.

I am enjoying the course work The stimulating discussion in the course work and assignments to Brain rot and cognitive decline and how to have proper balance in use of social media vs time out of social media is warranted. Shallow habits of the mind dulling our capacity for deep thought and meaningful experience shows that while not a medical diagnosis , the cognitive decline noted is true and causality will be established in further research work. My mind is getting more and more stimulated into how diverse economic studies really are from its huge relationship to politics as we move into a more multipolar global economy. I enjoy every lecture and tasks. This has been a stimulating academic journey. A little bit extensive and time consuming but worth it.

I originally wrote a semi negative review on an early lecture (I thought it was on that lecture specifically and not the whole course. I am new to Udemy so that was my mistake) The course is very long and there's a lot of sections on Covid19 and how it effects/effected the economy. This gets a little tiresome but it does do for great brain exercises and makes you reflect on real life scenarios, so I did find that useful. There's a lot of homework to do, and youtube videos to watch. I did most of it, but not all. I do recommend doing this as you will learn a lot more and more in depth. He mentions many times to participate in the q&a. I recommend doing this where you can as it will challenge you to put your learning to the test and help you learn more. All in all, it is a great course. I learnt what I was looking to learn and can now apply this to my life. Thank you for the course Mr. Sivewright, and my apologies for the initial negative review.

Hi I've been following this course entitled "The Most Comprehensive (86 hours) Economics Course (Diploma) since 6 months. It's true that for someone seeking knowledge transfer as uploading information from one device to another and think it can be achieved in a one shot operation, this course may seem bewildering at the beginning and throughout its length. But I think that this course is not only high academic one, due to its high academic content, but it also addresses different topics, such as economics, public affairs and policy making, social impacts of public policies, European affairs and political bargaining, etc. And these can be transposed in discussions in different countries. I also think that this course is worth much more than $9.9 and its standard quality goes beyond those courses dispensed by IMF or World Bank for certain professionals and is accessible by everyone, even those in the poor countries like mine. As for myself who have served at some point in time in public policy management and making, this course is valuable ressources for sharpening and honing my economical, social and political critical thinking at the same time it reinforces and updates my knowledge in the various fields necessary to understand the real world. I seize the opportunity to thank Chris Siverwright for this great work and his abnegation and continuous effort to update it which renders the topicality of the course very impressive. I recommend it without restriction! Monja Roindefo Learner of the Course

This course encourages you to participate. In each and every lecture the tutor reminds you to involve in discussions, to comment and ask questions in order to get the most of the course. The main economics concepts are explained in short lectures of 3 minutes and in the following lectures if mentioned they are explained again. There are lectures on economies of the USA , The UK, South Africa, Nigeria etc. The tutor encourages you to listen actively and ask questions because that is the way we learn and develop economical thinking.

The course is a perfect mix of informational and executional education. We are not just presented with theories and concepts, but we also get exposure to current affairs, aticles, research work, and other online material. Mini research projects and discussions in the Q/A are the spirit of this course. This section doesn't just widen perspective but induces curiosity . Would 10/10 recommend this course to anyone wanting to upscale their knowledge of economics and the world !

It a very good course if you want to learn economics , one of the best things is that is not just a course as the instructor is very responsive more than you would expect even if the course end as time goes new things keep adding up and your knowledge keeps increases. Everything is perfect expect for one thing as nothing can be perfect so is this course ,one flaw that it carry is the lack of new method to present(as no animation or exciting ppt's are there) and i guess this is the only downfall of the course but that does not stop the instructor for making this course a real worth while experience for students and with all that being said its definitely worth it if you want to learn economics but lack newer presenting Technics

By Sachinraj K Venugopal on 5/9/2020

Great...great..... great job and effort by the instructor to make us understand the the situations happening or happened in the global economy especially UK, US so on. and different ways to remember the economics concepts also very helpful. i was only viewing the economic situations in India without much involving in the global issues. as of now where i have covered 50% made me to analyse and observe the things happening in the global economy. thank you so much professor. Out of curiosity and interest i have joined this course. god has given me the opportunity to access this course through my friend's lap. but now i have to return him back the lap very soon as he need to do some research work. i don't know whether i could complete this course as i don't have my own laptop or mobile. hope i would and thanking god for giving me the opportunity to complete at least 50% of the course.

In the following, I would like to take the opportunity to compose a short and fair rating on this course Micro and Macro Economics offered through the Oxford School of Learning in the UK. I have come across the course for more than one year and I can confirm to really enjoy as the lecturer is always very well prepared when it comes to updated topics and issues within the global economy, but also the British one. The structure of the course is well thought. The student is introduced some examples on how to use the platform udemy which enables him/ her to succeed and complete the course by being awared. The core system of the course is the Q&A session where international students do have the unique possibility of posing questions and answers related to a specific theme. By so doing, current and updated socioeconomic knowledge is built up on a very sustainable and profound level. Without overstating but I rarely saw any engaged lecturer who really lives for the very complex and difficult subject such as economics. It is worthwhile to mention that, apart from economics, many other fields are covered including culture and politics. This course is a give and take activity. Rather than just passively sitting in front of the computer, I can confirm that one's outcome significantly increases and stays abouve by doing workbooks, homework and classroom participations. In closing, I also want to highlight the educational announcements where the lecturer posts current and relevant issues that, if wanted and necessary, can be transferred to the Q&A room. Finally, I can recommend this course as it can be done full or part-time according to one's needs, wants and likes. A big thank you for the continuous engagement, resilience and communication on this course as it helps to improve social, planning and conceptual skills in the long run.

The course is Good, so far. Homework: There is homework. I have not found it difficult to understand, but it does take some time. I entered this course knowing almost nothing about the study or nature of Economics but have learned a good deal so far. The teacher has been doing a good job. He will answer questions or addresses concepts to be understood. His assistance/help comes at a very reasonable amount of time. He may ask questions. :-)
