Course Description

Painting a realistic portrait is much more than creating a well proportioned sketch and using a beautiful color palette. Our goal is to capture the likeness and character of a subject.

My name is Lettie, I studied Architecture and I’ve been an illustrator since 2012.

I’ve worked on a wide range of projects from architectural designs to video games, to children’s books, websites, I sell my illustrations on print-on-demand sites and, currently, I am combining my illustrator work with teaching digital art... I think it's worth the effort to take on new challenges and keep evolving. And today, is a good day for a new challenge! Yes, today we are going to paint a realistic watercolor portrait in Procreate. I know it can be intimidating, but I will walk you through all my process.

In this step-by-step course, we will start learning how to choose a good reference image. We’ll talk about the importance of lighting and contrast.

Afterwards, we will use the Loomis method to simplify the head into basic forms. We will learn how to make a value study in a traditional and in a digital way, understand the properties of color and several methods to create the perfect color palette.

Next, we will talk about digital watercolors. Since the techniques and process will be the same than with real watercolors, you will be able to do this digitally or traditionally. The choice is yours!

Finally, we will start painting our portrait. I’ll share with you tips on how to paint skin, eyes, hair, fabric folds, texture, and much more.

The reference image, custom brushes, color palettes, procreate file… everything you need to start painting your portrait with me is included in this course.

Basic knowledge of Procreate is recommended but not required to take this class. Having said that, let’s get started!

Lettie Blue

Hi! I’m Lettie Blue, architect-turned-illustrator, story-maker, and big fan of coloring books.

I’ve been a professional illustrator since 2012, working on all kinds of projects, from architecture and video games to children’s books. In 2017, I also started teaching because, honestly, I can’t sit still! Life’s too short not to do what you love.

Since 2023, I’ve teamed up with my friend Angie Grace to create mandala books, both easy and intricate, sometimes mixed with cute, whimsical illustrations, so people of all ages can enjoy the magic of coloring.

More recently, I wrote and illustrated a special interactive book for my grandma, who is living with memory loss. It’s called Where’s the Dessert? It’s a warm story with simple activities that feel more like sharing time with a friend than “memory homework.”

Whether you’re learning Procreate or coloring solo, with friends, or joining my grandma’s adventures, I hope you enjoy every moment.

Lettie is a great teacher. Above and beyond the recorded work, she has always been there when I needed some additional one-on-one help. Thank you Lette. Highly recommend this course

This is a great course. I am used with traditional painting, and this is helping me to learn digital. It is not easy, at first but I will get there.

This isn't really for beginners. Some parts of the lesson went through quite fast for a beginner.

I’m enjoying the course so far and have taken a lot of good information on layering color separation. Great instruction and great examples. I have downloaded the resource file and it has all the layers, but they are all empty. Is that a problem with my Procreate? Nonetheless, very good course.

I have been looking for a course like this for ages. Most of the digital watercolor courses I've found were either too basic or had an end product that didn't even resemble a watercolor painting. What I loved about this course was that even though the instructor did make use of digital "perks" (such as layers and the occasional use of the smudge brush), her techniques were completely "traditional" - from using "masking fluid" to building layers from lightest to darkest. The end would probably fool most people into believing it was a traditional watercolor. And best of all, I loved her little sidekick with his hilarious commentary. (You have to watch the class to understand!)
