Course Description
The Apostle Paul spent 18 months establishing a local church in Corinth. After he left, divisions, squabbles, leadership crises, and tension surrounding following Jesus in a very secular world threatened to fracture the foundation he worked to establish. In his letter to Corinth, Paul confronts these divisions with wisdom and tact.
In this intriguing online course, Professor N.T. Wright examines 1 Corinthians Chapters 1-10, and explores how the Apostle Paul dealt in practical terms with difficult, controlling, divisive people. You’ll also learn more about Paul’s views on marriage and human sexuality, and how he navigated questions of conscience and the limits of freedom. Prof. Wright makes clear connections between the teachings of Paul in Corinth and challenges faced by modern church leaders.

The course is helping me understand 1 Corinthians better as I 'm leading a Bible study on the book at the same time. I still have questions about application (HOW do we maintain unity and diversity?), but I really enjoy Prof. Wright's knowledge and perspective. Thanks for the opportunity!

Prof Wright is without doubt one of the greatest bible teachers of our time. Just being able to sit at his feet and learn the wisdom of Scriptures from him is gold. His lessons on 1 Corinthians is full of insight and has help me gain in depth understanding that would have taken me years to obtain on my own. And his teaching style is gentle and meek.

I have benefited from and appreciated greatly this course. Professor N.T.Wright brings a wealth of scholarship to his teaching, ranging from his understanding of Greek history and culture that made the city of Corinth such an important outpost for the good news of Jesus, to his deep appreciation for the history of the Old Testament and second temple theology that forms the backdrop to Paul's letter. Professor Wright is fluent in the theology of Paul and the New Testament and is able to teach and share new and keen insights that will enable any student to grow in faith, knowledge, worship, prayer, and community life. I appreciate the focus that he places on unity of believers particularly. Professor Wright helps us see the distinctions that are particular to the church of Corinth, such as the freedom and relative lack of political conflict and harassment as compared to some of the other churches to which Paul wrote. Such insight helps us to see variables that we might otherwise might miss when we simply read the New Testament straight through. As such, N. T. Wright helps us to build up our faith and our church, which is a theme of 1 Corinthians. Additionally, many of the issues that the church of Corinth experienced have echoes or parallels with the contemporary church. Professor Wright enables us to grasp better Paul's principle to "Copy me, just as I'm copying the Messiah" ( I Corinthians 11: 1). For this and much, much more, I'm grateful for Professor Wright and give thanks to God.

This was a pivotal moment for me where I could connect the dots of understanding a couple of feelings that happened to me concerning the Eucharist & also the feeling I had when I went in to a particular church. As ever he explains very clearly the text in it's context which illuminates the understanding as it was given in the first century & then how we understand the application for us today. Prof Wright talks in the last lecture of being built up & he is a first class communicator to aid this happening in each lecture. His very evident love for God shines through his words so draws you to want to know more. Thank you Prof Wright in helping to build us up in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Yes, it is a good match. Since the death of my 22 year old daughter, in 2018 matters of faith and eschatology have become very important to me. My world view and Bible understanding have been heavily influenced by my upbringing as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, although I am no longer a practicing member.

It is difficult to express how much I enjoyed this course, but I will say that it was a learning experience that I treasure, and just to say also that it was a delight to participate every day in such inspiring lessons. I appreciate the breadth and depth of Dr. Wright's knowledge, which brings an added dimension to the study. Thanks to everyone who helped bring this series to Udemy, so that many people everywhere could take part.

I will always want to listen and learn with Tom Wright; his style of delivery, passion for the subject matter is of the very highest quality. He always inspires me to greater study and my faith is enhanced as a consequence. After all, we all need inspiration to continue our faith when doubt and cynicism is everywhere. This is, of course synchronous with the subject and harmonizes entirely with humanities perception of the meaning of life.

This excellent teaching resource gives a unique opportunity to benefit from Professor Wright's experience as a historian, theologian and pastor; much the same as the Corinthian church was able to benefit from Paul's historical, theological and pastoral experience. As a pastor, I find Prof. Wright's insights to be very practical and useful, and always presented with a gentleness that reveals his pastoral heart. As with his other courses, he demonstrates how the scriptures are fully relevant and applicable today. I now feel much better equipped to address certain pastoral issues with the firm grounding gained from taking this course. I am very much looking forward to part 2 of this course.

I always found 1 Corinthians one of Paul's more difficult letters. Professor Wright has given me many new insights through his clear and in-depth explanation. Unbelievable how you can see your insights changing after decades. This course (and I followed them all) was one of the most enriching in that regard.

Professor Wright (also known as Church of England Bishop Tom) is ALWAYS thorough in his lectures and engaging in his presentations. He aims to inform and encourage folks from a wide spectrum of familiarity with the course content. I am a pastor who has studied the Scriptures in depth for over forty years: (with a Doctor of Ministry degree in preaching the Pauline corpus.) I ALWAYS learn something new, challenging and exciting from Bishop Tom's courses. (I even get tripped up from some of quiz questions!) This course in First Corinthians was especially helpful for me! The issues confronting the Corinthians are SO relevant for the North American church context. Marriage and family morality, plus rivalries and loyalties in church bodies over leaders with great charisma are no different now as then. The Corinthians' witness dilemma over food sacrificed to idols by pagan neighbors impacts me personally as well. I live in Edison, New Jersey which has a high percentage of South Asian Indian, Muslim and Chinese residents. We have attended celebrations where food has been offered to "gods and goddesses." This has been quite a struggle what to eat as to not offend nor to compromise our convictions. We also are very sensitive to our observant Muslim and Jewish friends over food served as well. To conclude. Professor (Bishop) Wright's pastoral and scholarly perspectives on these and other concerns are well worth the time and money invested. I have been enrolled in many www.ntwrightonline.com courses and will continue to be a loyal student. Rev. Doctor Kenneth J. Macari
