Course Description
Questions surrounding church traditions, the role of women in ministry, and the ways “spiritual gifts” are to be understood, embraced, and embodied were as real in the Apostle Paul’s time as they are today. Looking closely at the issues the early church faced, and how Paul addressed them, can help us find practical answers that can guide us in living as new, fully realized followers of Christ.
In this online course, Professor N.T. Wright explores chapters 11-16 of Paul’s first Epistle to the Corinthians, and explains in plain language Paul’s mission to unite a diverse, and sometimes fractured congregation through Christ’s love. You’ll learn how Paul described the community of faith as the body of Christ, and how the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth changed everything — and continues to transform the world.

I started taking this course because I had been reading other books by Wright - because I watched a you tube by him. He is one of the few that support women in the ministry and I am a woman in ministry. I am currently preaching through 1 Corinthians. This is extremely useful.

Professor Wright unpacked the many facets of Paul's thinking when he wrote I Corinthians. He provided an insider's view of the issues Paul was addressing to the Corinthian church. As I listened to Prof. Wright's lectures, unspoken questions I always had regarding the resurrection were answered. I came away from this course with a deeper appreciation of the implications of our Lord's resurrection. Thank you Professor Wright!

Yes....I teach a small group bible study through my church and this material has been helpful.

Very good, however, Professor declared that there were many gifts but one spirit. Then in a question in the prior lesson said the many different gifts indicated different spirits were involved. Both statements cannot be true.

Practical and encouraging! "The resurrection of Christ sheds light on everything." This course is packed full of practical and theological insights, from the goal and use of spiritual gifts, with love as the "golden thread," to the nature of Christ's resurrection and ours!

As with all of Prof. Wright's courses, the teaching and understanding he brings to the second half of 1 Corinthians are both excellent and highly useful for me as a pastor. His expertise as a historian provides invaluable insights into the mindset and lived experience of the early church in the First Century, drawing us together with them as the church in the Twenty-first Century. Understanding how Paul's theology mixed with his practice shines a useful light on how we might be the church today, both in our worship and daily living. Prof. Wright's experience as a pastor, which he has brought to bear in his teaching on this course with his characteristic humility, is a significant help to me as a pastor, for which I am very grateful.

The distinction on unity and diversity overlain with the emphasis on love is my takeaway from this portion of scripture and is best summed up in chapter 16 verses 13--14 which say "Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love".

A Christian lives between the resurrection of Jesus and his return. In the Gospels we read about the resurrection of Jesus. In 1 Corinthians, and especially the 2nd part, we get a glimpse through Paul of the final resurrection of all Christians. It goes without saying that Professor Wright can explain this in a profound, compelling and incredibly hopeful way.

Bishop Tom Wright is thorough in his exposition without being pedantic, clear without being vague. His lectures reflect current concerns for the worldwide mission of the church. He carefully enunciates and is energetic in his presentations. His approach is understandable for the novice Bible student as well as for the experienced pastor-theologian as myself. This is the 22nd course I have taken through NTWRIGHTONLINE: these courses continue to sharpen and challenge my perspective as a preacher and Bible student . I would recommend this and all of the other courses to anyone wishing to grow in Christian knowledge and faith. Rev. Dr. Kenneth J. Macari, Edison,.NJ, USA.

I really found the course inspiring. It deat clearly with som of the concepts that Christians find hard e.g. the role of women, an understanding of the Eucharist and above all the reality of the resurrection and its implications. An excellent study which I unreservedly recommend.
