Course Description
The Apostle Paul writes a passionate letter that sheds light on the difficulties he experienced in his relationship with the Corinthian church. Prof. Wright teaches how Paul dealt pastorally with misunderstandings and assumptions that he longs to correct. Writing from a distance after his painful visit to Corinth, Paul addresses challenges to his apostleship and ministry with boldness and Godly sincerity. In this second letter, you will see how practical issues of ministry and mission caused times of darkness for Paul. Yet, out of these struggles comes a fresh beam of light from the God who raises the dead. Down the ages, the Church has benefited from the Apostle’s ‘theology of weakness’ and his vision of God’s strength and sufficiency through it all.
This is a timely and relevant course for followers of Jesus in today’s world to examine what is going on in terms of the larger Biblical story of God’s unbreakable love for his people. You will learn about God’s purposes to establish the Church as a Messiah shaped family in which people live together with rebuke and forgiveness, grief and joy, and suffering and comfort. Prof. Wright will connect Paul’s vision of apostleship to Jesus’ death and resurrection, which will help you recognize when and how God is at work in your own life and the world.

Professor Wright did a masterful job of presenting the dynamics of the relationship between Paul and the Corinthian church and the strategies Paul used to bring about reconciliation. These strategies were born out Paul's suffering and total reliance upon Jesus for the strength to bring it about. Professor Wright's understanding stemmed from his own experiences in church leadership. Thank you Professor Wright!

Of course, in this course I gained a lot of insight into the relationship between Paul and the church in Corinth, and what this can and should mean for the church today. But the greatest learning moment for me is the insight into the fact that believing and therefore living as a Christian is an alternation between suffering and comfort. That is a further renewal of my mind.

Well, for several reasons: I find Tom Wright to be such an engaging and comforting speaker; I study a lot on my tablet and find this a really relaxing way to study; the software is becoming easier to use with every update and, I do not want a full-on relationship with the lecturer, but I do want the option to interact as I feel necessary. So yes, using the application on my tablet suits me very well presently.

Since I am beginning a new study with the community of faith developed in an online platform on 2 Corinthians, the material Tom Wright presents has been beneficial, useful and vital in helping others to understand the themes and topics addressed. What marks our lives as believers are these key concepts of redemptive means in addressing conflicts and issues with one another and in a larger fellowship, church or body of believers.

N. T. Wright does a thorough job of sharing the background of Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians (as we have it), and enriches us with keen insights for growing, learning, serving and worshiping. He is particularly good at seeing the fuller purposes of Paul’s citations of Old Testament scriptures, beginning with the use of Isaiah 40-55, to bring the rich themes of comfort for God’s church. By doing so, Professor Wright enables us to see the connections of the church with the promises of God to Abraham and down through the prophets. This is particularly enriching.

Truly a great study not only on 2 Corinthians, but also a great study into Paul's heart, humanity, and humility. This study left me with a renewed hope in the challenges of Christian life and ministry and a sobriety of vision in what it means to embody both the death and the life of the Messiah. I have hope and a greater sense of what it means to live out the call of God. I am so very grateful for the available courses Dr. Wright provides. I feel that I am being discipled as I go through each course, that I am living that part of the Great Commission in being a disciple so that I can then disciple having grown up in the knowledge of God. I appreciate these courses so much.

Being in full time ministry for 11 years, this course brought much encouragement, hope and healing for me. The heartaches and issues Paul faced with the Corinthian church is what every church will face, though a different degree for different churches. Paul approached the issues at hand with love, wisdom and prayer. He didn't process his pain and disappointment in a fleshy manner but a Christ like manner (Cross bearing) I found encouragement, hope and healing in seeing Paul's approach. This is definitely a model for all ministers to emulate. I encourage everyone who is in full time ministry or wanting to enter full time ministry to enroll on this course to be equipped, strengthened and encouraged. Shalom!

Prof Wright has again used his remarkable combination of academic learning and pastoral care to bring to life the apostle Paul. Understanding that this great apostle suffered from depression will be a real help to anyone either suffering themselves or seeking to support someone in this situation. The explanation that Paul describes his apostolic ministry and reinforcing what it is to be great in the kingdom of God refreshed my faith. We are truly blessed to be able to learn from Prof Wright through the online courses.

This course is a must-see gem! As always, the Professor brings 1st-century insights lacking in most commentaries, but they're particularly important in this case. Second Corinthians 5:21 has always been one of my favorites, a text I confess to often de-contextualizing. Never again! And if you've ever made some sort of theological ziggurat out of the "third heaven" (one I'm not guilty of), prepare for a blushing education. And I think you'll be humorously surprised by Paul's use of rhetoric and sarcasm as he closes this very personal letter to a church in turmoil. Once again, the Professor removes the 20-century scales from our eyes and places us squarely on the long-ago dusty roads of Greece and Asia Minor, hearing the words of Paul in entirely new ways. A treasure!
