Course Description

Phytochemistry is the area that comprises the study of chemical substances found in plants, including the metabolism that originates these compounds, their ecological context, their production by plants, their classification, isolation, and potential applications for human use, including applications in areas such as medicine, cosmetics, and food industry. Thus, this course aims to introduce the viewer to this fascinating world of phytochemistry by addressing the topics of secondary metabolism, types of secondary metabolites, methods of studying plant extracts, an overview of structural elucidation techniques, and biotechnological applications.

This introductory course has theoretical classes on the subjects covered in the form of a video, and at the end of each section, there is a Quiz on the content to be answered. In some classes, a scientific article is added as an additional resource for further reading on the topic. The course is divided into 6 main sections:

  • Introduction to phytochemistry

  • Secondary metabolism

  • Secondary metabolites

  • Plant investigation methods

  • An overview of Structural identification methods

  • Biotechnological applications of natural products

So if you ...

  1. Want to know the area of phytochemistry

  2. Want to know what kind of molecules can be found in plants

  3. Are you curious to understand the principles of isolation techniques of molecules of a plant

  4. Want to know the main techniques for identifying compounds isolated from a plant

  5. Want to know what is the role of plant molecules in nature

  6. Wish to know how to look for plants that may be useful in medicine

  7. Would like to know the usefulness of plants in the food industry, agriculture, among others

English:

Hi, my name is Guilherme, I have a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, a master's degree in Experimental Biology, and a Ph.D. also in Experimental Biology, both from the Federal University of Rondônia (Brazil). I recently finished a degree in math and I'm also finishing an educationl degree in physics. My main research area is the search for compounds that are active against the parasites of malaria and leishmaniasis. I also have been programming for a while, especially in the programming languages Python and R. My main interests are biology, biotechnology, programming, medicinal chemistry, and artificial intelligence. My main goal here in Udemy is therefore spreading the knowledge related to these areas to people around the world.

The course is well structured and gives a good overview of the science of plant chemicals and how these impact various aspects of life. It may be slightly difficult to follow for people who are not versed with chemistry and it would have gone a long way if it had explained basic concepts of chemistry to newcomers.

By Arianna Gini on 6/10/2025

Yes it was a good match for me, interesting topic. I need to point out however that there were some imprecisions regarding the explanation of some topics related to chemistry, about the understanding of the mechanisms of chemical phenomenon such as light absorption

By Bethany Weller on 3/24/2025

This course has been a great match because I really like chemistry and trees. The visuals and molecule diagrams are excellent. The PDF resources are very helpful and I have learned some new things by watching the videos.

By Stephen Turner on 12/8/2024

This was a very good introductory course and covered structural elucidation of purified compounds. These methods include nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, and infrared spectrometry. In presenting these methods, the details of compounds were revealed in greater detail, making the subject more concrete and understandable. The spoken English of the instructor was acceptable, but there were several mispronunciations. I recommend adding a page at the end with the correct pronunciations of words covered that students need to know.

By Robert Bolton on 2/18/2024

The class content and materials are great. The only drawbacks are 1) the instructor is a little hard to understand and 2) the transcript has many spelling errors.

By Erik Williams on 10/2/2023

The quizzes fave information not present in the lessons. And are not worded correctly and can be confusing causing you to get them wrong. Words and things never used during the lessons should t be brought to the test/quiz. Other wise very useful information

Being a chemistry student, this helped me to broaden my knowledge. The lectures were of perfect length, were engaging and to the point. I thoroughly enjoyed the course.

By Robert Conti on 2/20/2023

Loved the pacing and digestible introductions into each subject. Short and easy to follow along.

By Brandy on 7/9/2022

Allthough this course is an overview there are still important insights to glean especially if you have a background in phytochemistry. There are some fasinating gems in these lectures that surprised me. These courses give a lot of whys and deeper insight into phytochemistry. I recommend this course for both beginner and intermediate.

Muito bom, para nós, que somos da área da Biologia ou das Ciências Naturais, de uma maneira geral. Definitivamente recomendo
