What is Power Automate?

Microsoft Power Automate is a no-code and easy-to-use platform to automate repetitive tasks and improve efficiency. Individuals and workers use Power Automate to streamline their workflows and automate routine tasks, so they can focus more on high value work. Users of Power Automate has seen a 15% increase in productivity after using Power Automate for only a week.

What is the difference between Power Automate Cloud vs. Power Automate Desktop?

There are two main flavors of Power Automate: Cloud and Desktop

  • Power Automate Cloud: Cloud is used to automate tasks within software applications (think Emails, OneDrive, Twitter, Trello, SharePoint, Excel Online) that exist in the cloud. Connectors (or app bridges) are used, and a Microsoft 365 account is required. This course does not cover Power Automate Cloud.

  • Power Automate Desktop: Desktop is more popular, as it uses the programs on your local machine and works with desktop and web interactions. Anything that you do on your computer desktop or web, you can automate with Power Automate Desktop, including legacy and first-party applications. Power Automate Desktop is available to Windows 10 users, and comes pre-installed with Windows 11.

What can you do with Power Automate Desktop?

Microsoft Power Automate Desktop can be used to automate tasks in your desktop and web applications. Here are some of the tasks that you can automate with Power Automate Desktop, that you cannot with Power Automate Cloud:

  • Create, read, and write folders and files on your machine

  • Edit, read, and write local Excel files

  • Perform CMD and scripting actions

  • Create and read PDF files using OCR

  • Record actions on any software applications (even legacy or independent / first-party) and automate it

  • Automate web page clicking and typing, and extract values you need

  • Robotic Process Automation

What are the main features of Power Automate Desktop?

  • Desktop and web automation - automate anything on your desktop and on the web browser, including reading / writes files, sending and processing emails, and scraping values from websites

  • No code and easy to use - no code required; Power Automate Desktop uses a workflow designer that is a drag-and-drop based system

  • Comprehensive and extensible - automate all programs using UI Automation features, including legacy programs; extend to other software applications using recorders

  • Link to cloud flows - link Desktop flows to Cloud flows; enabling you to transfer information between both types and trigger unattended and attended Desktop processes

  • Sophisticated logic - use complex logic gates to make your Desktop flows sophisticated, including conditions, variables, loops, error handling, subflows, and more

  • Share flows - share flows with anyone, allowing you to create impact and improve productivity for yourself, your team, and across your organization

  • UI and browser recorders - create automated flows by recording the task yourself, and Power Automate Desktop does the rest

  • Robotic Process Automation - embrace RPA for both desktop and web by performing automation tests, in both attended and unattended desktops

  • The future - Microsoft has included Power Automate Desktop pre-installed in Windows 11 for a reason; automation available to everyone is the future

Loved this course! I’ve already recommended it to my coworkers who are also Senior Consultants. My only feedback is that it would be helpful to have sample files available for download...creating them manually was a bit of a PITA. I also noticed a couple of areas that seem out of date. For example, in Section 2, Module 15, there’s no specific callout about adding file extensions. The instructions mention the “pathway already filled,” but don’t note the need to add “.txt.” Other modules mention extensions, but since this was the first time encountering it, it took me over 30 minutes to figure out that the missing “.txt” was the issue. Another example is Section 2, Module 22. With the recent updates, you can’t run a process from the Main Desktop view unless you publish the flow from the Designer view. There was no callout for that, and it took me a while to troubleshoot. I wasn’t able to run or copy the flow until I realized it needed to be published, and I ended up rebuilding part of the section before I noticed the publish option. Overall, it was a great course, and I’m excited for The Intelligent Worker platform and future content. Thank you!

I was playing with Power Automate myself, and this course put everything in structure: a big thumbs up. Perhaps what is more important than the actual content is the way the instructor uses the flows - in ways that you wouldn't normally think of. This helps broaden your perspective on this software. I would definitely recommend you to pause the video, see the steps Henry built and make them on your own. This will help you further "warm up" to Power Automate. A note to the instructor: I believe the course will benefit yearly updates; perhaps something like "what's new in 2023", "what's new in 2024"... so that the course stays evergreen.

Always appreciate a course like this that goes through the meat of a tool in a logical way with examples to follow. I had to build all the files used in the course myself; so as others have said, providing a zip of all the files would save time and encourage folks to follow along which is so critical for learning.

I just finished an online course on Power Automate Desktop today, and I'm really impressed with what I learned. The course was clear and straightforward, making complex automation tasks easy to understand. The practical examples helped me quickly grasp how to apply what I learned. I now feel ready to start automating my workflows and save time on repetitive tasks. Overall, a great course for anyone looking to enhance their productivity!

Great course! I was a complete beginner, I heard and saw something about PAD before in several videos but I didn't have a clue what all can be automated! Everything was very well explained. I would just appreaciate if we could get some data ahead because some flows were already prepared and it took me quite some time to adapt it to my environment, my directories, think about what I should write in files to be able to read from them etc. Other than that, thank you so much.

Hi - in the videos I use, at the end of them there are sometime the last secounds of speakting missing. The slowly working machine in the presentatin is boring. In the last lession with IF and ELSE conditions, I had to enlarge the variables reading the date with index information where to find the date in all variables. In the trainign section this information was not used. In my case - whenever I wrote the variabe without this information, the system displayed an error.

This course is really very interesting and well structured. It starts quite easily and the level increases, which I found good. The language is very light, understandable, microphone in the picture is very good. Only my personal message to him was answered with a standard message.

Fantastic course. Very well structured and informative. Gives you the whole your of Power Automate Desktop and really builds a strong foundation of knowlegde that you can build upon. Thank you very much for a amazing course.

By Aneta Kogut on 3/4/2023

I recommend this course to everyone who would like to get to know the very grounded basics of Power Automate Desktop. The language is quite clear and understandable, sound good, examples clearly explained. This is quite good range of topics cover to get the broad picture of power automate features.

By Rubdul Bah on 2/22/2023

The course does have a pretty good dive into Power Automate desktop for many interesting uses. Henry does appear very knowledgeable and gives good insights into possible use cases for Power Automate. However it seems that some topics such as scripting receive too shallow of a dive to understand how to integrate into the environment and connect them properly to the flow. Despite this if you are one debug out kind of minds this should be no problem for you to understand the concepts on display. This is the kind of course I could recommend to beginners and it will be made all the easier if you have prior programming experience. You may want to do a few projects first before calling yourself an expert however, how about automate looking up flight tickects.
