Our take

Based on the ratings of 896 students and a sample of their written reviews, as the course stood in September 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a practice exam bundle for the AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate DEA-C01, 260 questions across four full-length tests, co-written by Stephane Maarek and Abhishek Singh. It's built as the last step before test day, meant to sit alongside Maarek and Frank Kane's main DEA-C01 course rather than replace it. Despite the "beginner level" tag, reviewers who do well here already have hands-on AWS experience or have finished the main course first.

Reviewers who passed the exam say the detailed explanations helped them understand the material, and several praised the scenario-style questions for forcing real reasoning instead of guessing a service name. Accounts of difficulty are mixed: some reviewers found the actual exam tougher than these practice tests, one found the practice questions harder, but several called the long, tricky-scenario format good preparation either way. A sizable chunk of the 4.2-star average comes from complaints about stale content: questions referencing deprecated services like Snowmobile and S3 Select, a wrong Lambda timeout default, and gaps around newer exam staples like Redshift, data quality, Airflow, and Flink that some reviewers hit on test day but never saw here.

The course was updated as recently as September 2026, but reviewers were still flagging outdated questions in August, so the refresh cycle seems to lag the real exam's drift toward Redshift, data quality, and orchestration tools. Treat it as a confidence check and a way to practice long scenario questions, not a guarantee. Paired with Maarek and Kane's main course and some hands-on AWS time, it's a solid final lap. Skipped alone, without the prerequisite course, it won't teach the underlying concepts.

Best forPeople who've finished Maarek's DEA-C01 course and want exam-style scenario drilling before test day.
Skip it ifYou want practice questions that track the exam's newer Redshift, Airflow, and data quality emphasis.

Pros

  • 260 scenario-based questions across four practice tests, not simple recall
  • Detailed explanations helped several reviewers understand and pass, they say
  • Long, tricky scenario questions mirror the real exam's format, reviewers say
  • Content was updated as recently as September 2026

Cons

  • Multiple reviewers flag outdated questions on deprecated services like Snowmobile
  • Gaps around newer exam focus areas: Redshift, data quality, Airflow, Flink
  • Some questions read as long-winded or ambiguous compared to the real exam
All 65 questions were quite long and designed to test your understanding with tricky scenarios. However, it was great practice, and I'm glad I took it.

Quality speaks for itself

SAMPLE QUESTION:

A data engineer is encountering slow query performance while executing Amazon Athena queries on datasets stored in an Amazon S3 bucket, with AWS Glue Data Catalog serving as the metadata repository. The data engineer has identified the root cause of the sluggish performance as the excessive number of partitions in the S3 bucket, leading to increased Athena query planning times.

What are the two possible approaches to mitigate this issue and enhance query efficiency (Select two)?

  1. Transform the data in each partition to Apache ORC format

  2. Compress the files in gzip format to improve query performance against the partitions

  3. Perform bucketing on the data in each partition

  4. Set up an AWS Glue partition index and leverage partition filtering via the GetPartitions call

  5. Set up Athena partition projection based on the S3 bucket prefix

What's your guess? Scroll below for the answer.

Correct: 4,5.

Explanation:

Correct options:

Set up an AWS Glue partition index and leverage partition filtering via the GetPartitions call

When you create a partition index, you specify a list of partition keys that already exist on a given table. The partition index is sub list of partition keys defined in the table. A partition index can be created on any permutation of partition keys defined in the table. For the above sales_data table, the possible indexes are (country, category, creationDate), (country, category, year), (country, category), (country), (category, country, year, month), and so on.

Let's take a sales_data table as an example which is partitioned by the keys Country, Category, Year, Month, and creationDate. If you want to obtain sales data for all the items sold for the Books category in the year 2020 after 2020-08-15, you have to make a GetPartitions request with the expression "Category = 'Books' and creationDate > '2020-08-15'" to the Data Catalog.

If no partition indexes are present on the table, AWS Glue loads all the partitions of the table and then filters the loaded partitions using the query expression provided by the user in the GetPartitions request. The query takes more time to run as the number of partitions increases on a table with no indexes. With an index, the GetPartitions query will try to fetch a subset of the partitions instead of loading all the partitions in the table.

Set up Athena partition projection based on the S3 bucket prefix

Processing partition information can be a bottleneck for Athena queries when you have a very large number of partitions and aren’t using AWS Glue partition indexing. You can use partition projection in Athena to speed up query processing of highly partitioned tables and automate partition management. Partition projection helps minimize this overhead by allowing you to query partitions by calculating partition information rather than retrieving it from a metastore. It eliminates the need to add partitions’ metadata to the AWS Glue table.

In partition projection, partition values, and locations are calculated from configuration rather than read from a repository like the AWS Glue Data Catalog. Because in-memory operations are usually faster than remote operations, partition projection can reduce the runtime of queries against highly partitioned tables. Depending on the specific characteristics of the query and underlying data, partition projection can significantly reduce query runtime for queries that are constrained by partition metadata retrieval.

I am having many problems, with both the training and this test exams. Most of the learning contents were useless for these test exams. Question after question I'm noticing that everything is new for me. I ran 3 exams so far and in everyone of them I got 66% or less. I'm learning all over again with the text exams. I dedicated months to take the classes and practice hands-on. I'm very concern and I'm considering giving up the exam.

By Ivan Boyaryn on 6/28/2026

I have barely passed the exam. Unfortunately, both these practice tests and the course from Maarek weren't as useful as I hoped. I have more than 5 years of experience as a Data Engineer in AWS, and I expected to learn here additionally the knowledge about AWS which is not often used in real life but tested in the real exam. I have learned rarely used knowledge ... but mostly not the one which is tested in the real exam. I have passed mostly due to my experience, logical thinking and a bit of luck.

By Amayas BOURAHLA on 6/25/2026

The exam was a bit harder than the practice tests. There were no short questions simply asking which service to use. All 65 questions were quite long and designed to test your understanding with tricky scenarios. However, it was great practice, and I'm glad I took it. I was consistently scoring around 75% on all the practice exams.

By RicardoLP on 2/13/2026

I just passed the exam and both the course and these practice exams have been useful! Thank you for this! However I did the exam yesterday and some questions were not in any of the courses: - MERGE command in GLUE - VACCUM REINDEX / RECLUSTER - DSSE-KMS ( In the course you mention it should not appear yet -> It now appears) - DynamicFrame process There are some more but cannot remember! Just giving this feedback so you can use it to include it in the course or for further exams! :)

Very comprehensive. It provides a valuable and necessary complement for gaining a deeper understanding of real-world use cases and how various AWS services function differently, including in areas such as security, scalability, availability, durability, compliance, and governance.

By John Galpin on 12/10/2025

First of all I did pass the exam. I do have +4 years of hands on experience doing Data Engineering in AWS. I took these exams multiple times and did a review of some sections for the course its paired with. Overall the questions in the exam will be in line with the medium and hard difficulty questions of these practice tests. Maybe 10% actual exam will be on par with the easier question here. There were several questions on data quality not covered in the review material really.

By Vanshaj Jain on 9/15/2025

Great for in-depth understanding of the material and useful for the exam. Ignore the people who are saying the following - 1) Real exam is easier than these questions- It's not, be prepared with the same level of trickiness in the questions and nuance. 2) Questions didn't come from these practice papers - They did, albiet few but greater point is to have an understanding over rote memorization of questions which this course provides well. Cons - Explanations are a bit general, could've been tailored better to the questions but it's still fine. 2) Some questions are still asking about Kinetic Data Analytics despite it being depricated.

By Sandeep Koar on 6/15/2025

Just Brilliant!!! This practice test along with their course was one of the most critical factor that helped me to clear my exam. These tests are very close to the real exam and the explanations given for each of the correct and particularly incorrect answers will solidify your knowledge and deep understanding on this subject. The instructors have put lot of effort, indeed. Thanks Stephane and Abhishek.

The mock tests helped a lot and I was able to successfully pass the test. I recommend studying through this material because it is very faithful to what the test is. Os simulados ajudaram muito e consegui passar com êxito na prova. Recomendo estudar por esse material pois está muito fiel ao que é a prova.

By Cynthia Betina Jofre on 8/12/2024

I took the AWS DE exam last week, and making a comparison, in general terms the questions are well presented, deep enough, very similar in structure to the real exam. However, there are more questions related to S3 storage and life cycle rules as well as the networking domain than in the real one. I think the author could add more questions about data transformation, which is for far the domain with more questions in the real exam (redshift, glue, severless pipelines)
