React Fullstack with node/express, PostgreSQL and AWS (Udemy.com)

Learn how to setup a React Fullstack app on AWS with a PostgreSQL database

Created by: Mohammad Iqbal

Last updated September 2021

Our take

Based on the ratings of 690 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2021. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, six-hour walkthrough of wiring a React front end to an Express API, a PostgreSQL database, and finally a real AWS deployment. Mohammad Iqbal builds a small blog app with posts, comments, search, custom messaging and an admin panel across 67 lectures, then spends the last three sections on AWS. It's pitched at intermediate developers, and the requirements list assumes basic React-Redux. Reviewers confirm that. This is not a place to learn React or SQL from scratch. It is for people who already write components and want to see how the pieces connect on a server.

Students who liked it praise the breadth for a free course and the tightly edited videos. One reviewer says it filled gaps other teachers left; another was looking for exactly this kind of AWS overview for Node apps. The complaints are consistent though. The instructor moves fast, code sometimes appears on screen that was never typed on camera, and new folders show up in section three without explanation. Lower-star reviews report errors, a final GitHub project that would not run, and authentication that never worked for them. The Redux setup lives in a separate course, and there is no certificate and nothing to download.

The bigger issue now is age. The last update was September 2021, the code uses class based components, and reviewers were already calling it outdated in 2020. Expect to debug. Even so, about 71,000 people have enrolled and the 4.4 rating from 690 reviews holds up, with nearly four in five giving four or five stars. It costs nothing. Worth it if you are comfortable troubleshooting alone and want a map of the full stack. Skip it if you want polished, current code.

Best forReact developers who want to see a database, an API and an AWS deployment wired together without paying for it.
Skip it ifYou're new to React or Redux, or you want current code that runs without debugging; it was last updated in 2021.

Pros

  • Free, and covers front end, Express API, PostgreSQL and AWS deployment in about six hours
  • Three sections on AWS, from an overview of how it works to a full step by step deployment
  • Videos are edited tight, and reviewers say the pace suits watching someone type
  • Builds one real app: blog posts, comments, search, custom messaging and an admin panel

Cons

  • Last updated September 2021 and uses class based components; reviewers report errors and a broken final repo
  • Moves fast and skips steps, with code and folders appearing on screen that were never shown being created
  • Redux setup is in a separate course, and there is no certificate or downloadable resources
Definetly not for the beginners, it's a fast paced learning experience but goes straight to the core of the back-end of modern apps.

Intermediate is accurate: basic React-Redux is required, and reviewers say it is not for beginners.

Course Description

Learn the Most used technologies currently in web development

AWS is the most used Cloud computing platform by far, with over 30% market share.

PostgreSQL is the one of the most popular SQL based database engine in the world.

I dont think I need to say anything about React.

We will begin with the basics, then move onto setting up the database. We will setup the Express routes which will allow us to communicate with our database. Then we will build out the client side blog using React components. We will animate the posts and comments, then move onto something more difficult. We will begin AWS. I will give you a detailed explanation of how AWS works then we will go into a complex deployment with AWS.

This is one of the best courses I have ever seen on Udemy and the most amazing thing is that it's free. Thank you Iqbal!

By Amos Kibet on 7/22/2021

The course was generally good. However, the instructor was a bit fast, and there was some slides where code was already prepopulate don his screen which was not available in the previous screen. I had to pause the video to write the code on his screen, which took a lot of time.

Technologies are old (class based components), hard to understand (very fast code writing with many mistakes), even final project in github doesn't work at all because of some errors

By Rizki Adiguno Wibowo on 6/30/2020

Covers full stack development from scratching back end, front end and implement it on AWS

By Stephanie Schustermann on 5/11/2020

amazing, he explains everything and shows every step

Amazing value in this action packed course!! If you're interested in learning about Progresql and the inside workings of AWS, this is the course for you. Definetly not for the beginners, it's a fast paced learning experience but goes straight to the core of the back-end of modern apps. It can get frustrating if you get errors with your code, so pay 100% attention on what's on the screen. Thanks, Mohammad!

- Going too fast that not able to follow - Not sure of what's happening at the end of each code snippets - Not able to debug if I have a typo while following the really fast video, since the instructor is not writing them on the functional manner

By Puja Fitzpatrick on 11/17/2019

Mohammad is great at teaching this full stack tutorial. He has helped me put all the pieces together and fill in gaps where other teachers could not. He has taken the time to edit his videos, and it shows! I also like his pace - not too slow, especially when we're just watching him type. Thanks for a great course!
