Content and Overview

This course is a hands-on, project-based course suitable for musicians and songwriters with little or no previous recording experience. We designed this course especially for beginners — so you don't need to know anything special about recording gear, signal flow, or mic placement before starting this course.

We simply expect that you're a musician, and that you'll be recording yourself throughout this course. And we strongly recommend you take this course with a specific song in mind to record! Songs that feature guitar, bass, percussion, keyboards and vocals are best suited for this course, but you can adapt any instrumentation. If you don't have a song ready to record, you can record the sample project song we'll provide to you.

Throughout this course, we'll walk you through every step of recording your song:

  • You'll learn how to set up your audio interface to work seamlessly with your computer and REAPER, the digital audio workstation (DAW) software we'll be using throughout this course. You'll also learn how to optimize REAPER for music recording, so you can improve your workflow and get the results you want faster and with less effort.
  • Using either your own song or the sample song we'll provide to you, you'll learn how to use XLR microphones, audio interfaces and other tools to record acoustic and electric musical instruments. Once you understand the basics, you'll feel confident combining these tools to capture and preserve the quality of your sound.
  • We'll demonstrate some helpful audio editing techniques so you can fix timing and tuning issues, compile your best performances, and edit out unwanted sections from your song. You'll also learn how create a release-ready final mix by using compression and EQ, adding reverb, and automating level changes.
  • Finally, we'll cover everything you need to know to export your final mix into your preferred digital format. Whether you need to send demos to your bandmates, upload your songs for digital distribution, or create stems for others to remix, you'll learn how to export your mix to a digital format that suits your needs.

This comprehensive course includes complete project files and other downloadable resources, such as:

  • A checklist of recommended equipment
  • Sheet music, lyrics and chords for our sample project song
  • A customized configuration file to optimize REAPER for music recording
  • An audio troubleshooting checklist
  • Free kick and snare drum samples and percussion loops
  • Helpful PDF reference documents and "cheat sheets"

At the end of each section, we'll also give you a project checklist so you can practice the skills you've just learned. By the end of this course, you'll have recorded, edited and mixed a complete song you'll be proud to share with the world!

There's a lot of free lessons out there on Youtube and such, but all of the material I've looked at was all over the place, both in the sense that the type of content I wanted was scattered amongst several videos, and in the sense that one video could have everything from beginner to much more advanced topics. This course really had what I was looking for: Concepts for the very beginner home producer, all in one place.

The instructions are very clear. As an absolute beginner on Reaper I now feel much more confident using this program but also much better at mixing music. Good balance between music theory and step-by-step instructions that slowly but steady is increasing my knowledge on how to record and making the most of my music on the computer. A good thing to know before starting the course is that you may need to invest in some music instruments and equipment. In my case I bought myself a Focusrite 2i2 audio interface, and a Yamaha NP-12 keyboard, with a USB midi cable, as well as an Blue Yeti Microfon before starting this course. Headphone is also essential.

It is a very good course for beginning the recording process and talks about some more advanced techniques that might be needed and are not apparent to the beginner. I would have liked to see more in depth info on some of the techniques, but maybe that will come as a separate course. The course is extremely useful for getting the right info and most importantly creating a repeatable and tested workflow to create songs. Thank you!

This was so so helpful to me! I already had an audio interface and mic (that thanks to this course I discovered I had not been using the right way), but so far I had only used Audacity to record and edit (a bit) my recordings. I really liked the structure of this course, all the materials that come with it and all the lessons. It made me so confident to record and edit my own material. I couldn't recommend it enough. Thank you so much!!

HIGHLY recommend this course for anyone who wants to begin recording their songs / ideas and has little to no audio recording background. Every minute with Michael is a gift, with pro tips and clear explanations. The course is small enough to manage from start to finish within days if not weeks and has everything organized in bite sizes with sections/labels.

Very well explained without any rush and excellent for novice

This course is organized around the project of recording, mixing and mastering a song on your own computer. The instructors cover so many important topics that I encountered on my own attempts and made that all look very natural. How do I correct pitch in my vocals? How can I simulate a guitar amp? How do I configure a compressor by ear? What's the essence of mastering? These are just a few examples of the gems that I discovered in this course. This is not one of those courses where the instructor seems to be making his mind up as he teaches, everything is very well prepared and taught. Very highly recommended for musicians who want to record their own songs on their computer.

For the absolute beginner importing the Reaper Config File produces some errors because their pc's are set up exactly like the instructors. There should be some information on dealing with these errors. This course and the instructor are awesome. In fact, I have been trying to decide on which DAW to use and this course convinced me to use REAPER...You ROCK!

After many years of on and off efforts trying to record music, I finally got professional help! The is the best course ever for those interested in recording their own music! The clear explanations of all the technical terms but with the practical application through the videos, were excellent! The Reaper program is great and by following the instructor's guidelines, I managed to get my own recording rendered in 2 WAVE formats and a MP3 format within 3 days, all by myself! (And I must add that I'm not good with the jargon they use in this field). Thank you so much for this course and I would recommend this course to anyone who is interested in recording their own music or other musicians' music. Music regards Philip
