Remote Teaching Online // How To Record Lectures at Home (Udemy.com)

Teaching Online & Lecture / Lesson Recording From Home For Very Beginners

Created by: Nick Nyxson

Last updated June 2020

Our take

Based on the ratings of 569 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2020. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, 48-minute walkthrough of how to record a lecture at home and get the file to students. Nick Nyxson covers audio recording, video recording, which presentation software to use, and how to share the result on YouTube or Google Drive. The syllabus is exactly as narrow as the headline suggests, and he says so in the first lecture. It is for teachers, lecturers and professors who have never recorded anything and want to know which buttons to press, not for anyone who already owns a microphone and an OBS profile.

Reviewers like the plainness. The course has a 4.6 rating from 569 reviews, and the praise is consistent: short, simple, straight to the point, no filler. One reviewer liked that he takes his time explaining why one platform suits a situation better than another. The complaints are just as consistent. It is very basic, and one reviewer wishes it had been scripted because there are a few fumbles. Another found lectures 1 to 4 clear but the last three, on uploading to YouTube and Google Drive, not very useful. One student said questions went unanswered, and one found the voice fast.

It costs nothing, takes under an hour, and was last updated in June 2020, so expect the software screens to look a little different now. There is no certificate. Next to the other Teaching & Academics picks, which are courses on writing, statistics, nutrition and Spanish, this is the odd one out: a quick how-to for teachers rather than a subject to study. If you need to get a first recorded lesson online this week, it does the job. If you want editing, lighting or a full OBS course, look at the instructor's other material instead.

Best forTeachers and lecturers who have never recorded a lesson and want the basic steps in under an hour, for free.
Skip it ifYou already record with OBS or a decent mic, or you want editing, lighting and platform advice beyond a YouTube upload.

Pros

  • Free and only 48 minutes, so a nervous teacher can get from nothing to a shared recording in one sitting
  • Reviewers repeatedly call it simple, concise and free of filler, with no slick scripting
  • Explains why to pick one recording tool over another, not just which buttons to click
  • Covers both audio-only and video lectures plus how to share them on YouTube and Google Drive

Cons

  • Very basic and unscripted; one reviewer counted a few fumbles and wished it were tighter
  • The last three lectures on uploading to YouTube and Google Drive struck one reviewer as not useful
  • Last updated in June 2020 and no certificate; one student said Q&A questions went unanswered
Nick gets it! No fluff or filler, no overly slick presentation or heavy scripting, straight to the point. Very useful!

Truly beginner: no requirements at all, aimed at teachers who have never recorded a lesson. Anyone past that will find little new.
