Course Description

Follow award-winning broadcast professional, Andrew St Pierre White as he takes you set-by-step, as he conceptualises, shoots and edits two of his highly acclaimed TV documentaries. The first is based on a one-hour special documentary broadcast by Discovery Channel, and the second a half-hour serialised episode of a 26-part African adventure travel story.

Once released, critics used the words, "gripping", "superb", outstanding" in their reviews of these films.

The course consists of a series of videos with details of what is being taught as written summaries.

The documentary is run, and as the story unfolds, the director/producer goes though all the thoughts, processes, equipment and creative processes used. This is a real-life event, valuable to those who both shoot and edit stories on video.

As every scene is covered, the shooting techniques, editing ideas and storytelling methods are revealed. This is an actual documentary, so what is taught is not just theory it has become fact, and you can see the results for yourself.

The documentary was produced by an indie producer, yet still sold to major networks. How this was done is discussed.

The course lectures run to 247 minutes (4,1 hours). With some, you may need to watch them more than once, because there is quite a lot of learning to do.

If you are interested in making serious documentary films, or telling thought-provoking videos for TV or social medial, then this course has a lot to offer.

Much of what is being taught here is not, and cannot be taught in a classroom. It goes beyond theory, as the course is based on actual, highly successful productions.

Who this course is for:
All those who wish to make better, more compelling and engaging videos, where there is a story to tell.
Makers of documentary films in short and long form, corporate video makers will get a lot out of this course. And for those who want to make wedding or project videos with a special flare.
This course is probably not for you if you want to learn about cameras, lenses or editing software.
If you think that learning by example is a good way of understanding concepts, then this is for you. I go through, step by step, how I conceptualised, shot and edited this gripping TV documentary.

I've taken a few other courses by Andrew St Pierre White and enjoyed them thoroughly. I signed up for this course just to hear more words of wisdom, even though I have no real intention of ever filming a documentary. I was not disappointed.

Andrew est toujours aussi motiv et partage cette envie de faire du trs bon ouvrage.

By Lori Stalter on 7/3/2020

Not everyone will agree, but I like Andrew's courses best when the course itself is almost like a documentary of the topic being presented. Andrew is a fabulous story teller and his passion for his topics comes through best when he teaches in this way. It just requires knowing how to suss out the key information he's conveying through his lectures and real world examples instead of having it written out for you on a boring powerpoint slide deck.

Beautifully made documentary how Andrew St Pierre White made his documentaries. Explaining how he did it from start to finish. Wonderfull!

By Ishwar Chugh on 6/18/2020

Its a very detailed and well explained course however, Id like it if they were guidelines or step by step instructions on shooting a documentary from start to finish. A recap at the end would also be equally beneficial. But hats off to Mr. Andrew, I was able to clear a lot of questions I had in my mind. Its thorough, critical and most importantly easily understandable. Thank you

Exactly what I needed - lots of good technical tips and how and why the opening is so important. I continue to enjoy and learn a lot.

By Jorge Alcaide on 6/12/2020

It is already the third course I take from Andrew St. Pierre and the first two were incredible, so I expect this one will also be great. Yes, I want to add something: I love the humbleness of Andrew, he describes perfectly what could have been done better, and that is big quality of a good instructor or teacher

By Anthea Moon on 5/26/2020

The first time I started to watch this I let myself be put off before I even began. I thought the subject was uninteresting but actually knew nothing of where the story would go. I normally find docos for plane enthusiasts boring..
I have been fortunate (?) enough to have 200 hours of footage dropped in my lap for a doco regarding a technology , its interesting history and its benefits. I've returned to do the course only to find how I nearly ripped myself off by putting a dislike of one simple element that is actually irrelevant before the whole...
And now I am enjoying the story, the presentation, the lessons and Andrew's self expression and humour.
Thank you.

Absolutely brilliant instructor gives a very good insight into structure of filmmaking creative process and what things to avoid when making documentaries. Lots of attention to sound effects and music. No doubt effectively spend time by learning from experience filmmaker like Andrew. After this course, you will be sure that gear is not everything...
