Course Description

There is a lot going on in the news these days and it seems to travel quickly! 'News’ is about something that has happened—something as a result of which the world is going to be different. News is also about how other things are going to happen for which we have to get ready. It is far more than mere 'advice' or simply an event like any other. This is good news about the past (the events of Jesus's life) and good news about the future (the renewal of all creation).

We invite you to enroll in this short course based on Prof. N.T. Wright's book, Simply Good News. You will instantly get into the heart of the idea of what makes something 'good news'. You will also be brought into the world of the 1st Century writers of the New Testament in order to make more sense of what 'good news' means in our world today. You may wish to acquire Prof. Wright's book, Simply Good News, in whatever format that works for you. This course will be a great introduction to Prof. Wright's book that will allow you to live in a place where 'good news' makes a difference.

As I have felt before, I have sat enthralled by Prof. Wright's masterly exposition of his theme and oftentimes I have responded as I would hope to on hearing a great preacher. I have said previously in responding to his lectures that I have felt ashamed at my own limitations as a preacher and longed to resume the leadership of worship, although currently health problems make this a remote possibility at best.

Wonderful course. I was always confused about Dr. NT Wright's eschatology. I think these valuable lectures have given me many helpful insights into it. I am a first-generation Christ-follower from a Rajasthani Hindu family in India. Dr. Wright's lectures have helped me to understand the framework of the Bible in a better way. I was continually comparing his ideas with the traditional Hindu worldview. Right now, I am studying MTh. New Testament in a seminary. I wish that these courses would be made available to us at an affordable price.

As an "intro" course, this allows new learners to get a feel for the teaching style as well as the course presentation of Dr. Wright. His direct and simple (not shallow!) presentation, in conjunction with the text prescribed, gives one much to think about and practise. The misconceptions that are part of our theological DNA were addressed with logic and clarity, and the alternative is most attractive! A new heaven and earth is something to be anticipated indeed.

Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself. C. S. Lewis

Nothing N. T. Wright does is ever wrong! He is a brilliant theologian as well as a wonderful leader of the church. He is a great voice for the church to listen to today. I believe that he is steering the church back to its origins and encouraging us to see the bigger picture of the Kingdom of God. I look forward to reading everything that he writes as well as to "sit at his feet" through these teaching opportunities.

The story in its historical context is so much more meaningful. Tom Wright in general has, by putting Jesus' life in the context of His time, enabled me to see Jesus as wholly man as well as wholly God and opened up huge new vistas in my understanding of the Christian faith. Wright has given me a Jesus that I can relate to, sympathize with, admire as a man and then given me the knowledge to understand how He is part of the Trinity. I cannot recommend this course highly enough.

Since being away from this type of instruction for an extended period of time I found it a little hard to get back into the lecture circuit but all in all I found this course a challenge to some of the theories of what the "good news" is in today's world.

By Michael Dean McLain on 8/15/2015

Wondering what my life would be like if I'd understood the Gospel more fully when I believed... The Gospel is the central message to man about what God is doing through Jesus in the world. To understand this more fully is to enter the mind of the creator more deeply, to see Him for who He really is. Paul considered knowledge of God more important than anything. In fact, he said that everything else is rubbish in comparison! This book can help immensely in that endeavor! Chances are, this book will blow your mind! All glory to Jesus! Tom Wright writes with a flowing conversational style that all can embrace and understand. The Course style helps you to retain the material through lectures and quizzes. I highly recommend (in this order), Jesus, this book, and this course!

I can't begin to state all that I have learned (and continue to learn as I go back and re-read sections) from this course. The Gospel is even more amazing, splendid, wonderful than I understood before! It Really IS Good News! And it's Good News for the whole world, the whole creation. Thank you for your hard work and efforts putting together these courses. I plan to take everyone of them!

Whether you have been a follower of Jesus for many years, a new believer, or simply exploring aspects of the Christian faith, this course is a "must" for everyone. Prof. Tom Wright illuminates the the essential message of the Good News of Jesus Christ in ways that deepened my relationship and understanding of God. He opened my eyes to things I had never before considered about the Gospel, which have positively impacted my faith & the way in which I plan to share the Good News with others. I encountered the Word of God afresh, as Prof. Wright powerfully explained the purpose and plan of God in the death and resurrection of Jesus. This course is relatively short, but packs a powerful and positive 'theological punch' that is simply life-changing.
