Course Description
Most Important: Friends, please be sure to look through the course curriculum with meticulous care before buying to be sure this course will work for you. Thank you.
This course is being updated to bring it up to date with SQL Server 2017.
As of 3/27/2018, 40 videos have been replaced.
Replacement of all videos will happen over a month or so.
Reviews from before 3/6/2017 are from the older version of this course.
The new course features questions built right into the videos.
The new course features audio done with a studio microphone.
If you are at the intermediate or advanced level in SQL, do not join this course.
My explanation can be very detailed at times, so be sure you enjoy that.
Some of the videos cover programming, and some cover using a variety of resources without programming.
I use AdventureWorks2016CTP3, but you can also use AdventureWorks2017. Both are saved under the lesson 2 resources. There is no practical difference between the two for the purposes of this course. You must already know how to download lesson resources. I do not show how to do that.
Various topics are discussed through the videos. For example, there is not just one video on indexes because indexes are too big a topic. I discuss indexes through the videos where they play a role. The same applies to other concepts.
Be sure to look under the lesson resources for additional information and the code.
My explanations, in some of the videos, but not all, can be very detailed, so be sure you enjoy that before enrolling.
If you are looking for powerpoints, fancy graphics or a talking head, please do not enroll. I don't use those.
I do in different places use zooming to emphasize points.
The videos are an average in 10 minutes in length, so please be aware of that.
All the code is created in the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
I talk about execution plans quite a lot over multiple videos.
This course does not cover joins, normalization or stored procedures.
Friends, to get the most from this course, please watch it all, from beginning to end. There is a lot of information here:)
Thank you,
Tom and Adiv

We use SQL Server Express as a Data storage destination for Rockwell OBDC databases which also connects to XL Reporter for Data Collection and I have little experience with the software. It was cool to see that SQL can organize and arrange SQL data and I can see how others might find it useful. The explanations were great and the opportunity for hands on were built in. But for my case our use is hands off and just runs in the background of our other software. We currently use Express2008 but I see it is being updated. I would have liked to see more informations on the limitations of the software and key differences or updates between the new and older versions.

This has been a really useful course for me, I've learnt a great deal about how MS SQL Server works and its given me a lot more confidence in using the system. Lessons are at a quick but manageable pace, and you can always pause and rewind if you miss something. The material covered is really interesting if you need to create T-SQL and for me becoming a MSSQL Server admin has given me a great deal of information about how queries and indexes etc work. Thoroughly recommend

I am very experienced in MS Access. I am using this course to learn and become proficient with MS SQL Server. So far the course is excellent. The instructor explains and gives examples for everything. That is a very good trait for an instructor. It really cuts down on the "Why did he do it that way?" questions.

The CC and the Transcripts really need work. It was obvious the class was translated from something. It was hard to follow along with the class. If I didn't know SQL as well as I do, I would have been totally lost. It's a good thing the instructor used the GUI for everything he did. I wasn't crazy about the over use of the execution plan. I would have rather performed more exercises than keep looking at the plans. I understand how important the execution times are, but to me it was overkill. Have one chapter on execution plans. I did like the course taught how to use the GUI designers, as well as the typed in sql commands.

The SQL code for me is pretty trivial. However, not having used SSMS for a couple of releases, it has been very useful to see all of the enhancements that have been added.

I have completed a number of Tom's SQL courses. You should keep in mind that there is SQL databases and there is the internet. This course is about SQL. To build an online interface for your SQL database, you will need to other courses (on ASP, Razor, cshtml...). So this is a great SQL course!

Tom's explanations of concepts are clear with good samples. Excellent - all around. Clear and concise! Very easy to understand. He knows how to explain in a very easy and clear way and I do not get lost at all. Great class!!!

Great when your screen matches what's on the tutors vid. Here's a tip. I tried to load the tutor's 'person' excel' sheet and got error. 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' provider is not registered on the local machine. (System.Data). My tip, is to retry, using other versions of excel in the drop down. Mine worked successfully using 97-2003 version, even though I have excel 2016 on my machine. Strange, but it worked, and i was on course again.

Very basic and is building on experience. A very good overview with some depth added with basic extensions to updating and selection parameters. Don't know if it is Udemy or the courseware, but it shows that there is still 1 section left to complete. Why?

An excellent introduction to SQL using MS SQL Server, for the complete beginner. Really clear explanations for the newby, and very professionally put together. This is really not a course for people who already have experience of SQL, but despite this, it does go from absolutely nothing to covering some really useful commands. I highly recommend this introductory short course.
