Course Description

Many people have questions about what happens after we die and wonder if hope is simply about our ultimate future destination. It is a common assumption in Western Christianity that the primary message is about 'going up to heaven to be with God'. What if there is so much more to Christian hope than something that is going to happen later that will take us away from this world to a ‘better place’? What if there is more to the Good News that Jesus proclaimed than just 'life after death'?

This course addresses many questions people ask about 'where we go' after we die, including ideas about heaven, hell, and purgatory. Those who have read 'Surprised by Hope' will appreciate a fresh take on lasting themes and content from the book. However, this course also presents new ideas and material about the Christian virtue of hope in the present time. Professor N.T. Wright explains why Jesus' resurrection offers surprising answers by the God of hope who came to take charge of his world and dwell with his people in Jesus of Nazareth and through the Holy Spirit. Over a series of 24 lectures you will learn how the Christian hope for life in God's new creation should inspire and inform the mission of the church and individual followers of Jesus today.

In this course you will be encouraged to learn the reasons for our hope right here and right now. We invite you to explore these ideas and to be refreshed and renewed along the way, and perhaps, even surprised by the God of hope.

I'm grateful for the learning from this course. It has altered many of my views on the resurrection of Christ and what that means to me as a Christian. At times during the sessions I stopped the video and had to pray in response to personal convictions. I was a believer in Christ before viewing this video, I'm just a better practicing and more knowledgeable one know. With thanks.

This course deeply reminds me that, all my life has been deceived that "death is true, death is the reality of life" but that is the BIG lies. Death has lied to us all. NO, death is not the real and it's a fake thing. We will be raised to new lives, and enjoy the new creation harmoniously together! Actually, partly already begun and working toward that goal! And this is the real HOPE!

I always find it a joy to sit at Prof. Wrights feet for he enriches my whole being with his profound scholarship and engaging delivery. I have lost count of the times his wisdom has led me into prayer and set my mind working in ways that will benefit my preaching should I ever recover my health and voice, after three strokes, sufficiently to facilitate a return to the pulpit.

excellent content and technical support. prof. wright provides thought provoking insight into early christian thought and belief that causes one to relook scripture. like the bereans, i want to search the word and know the truth. his insights make me do that, digging deeper into meanings, history, how original language was used in other documents, etc. an exceptional study and exciting vision for the church in our day.

Its been enlightening in making deeper connection between OT promises and NT fulfilment. I've also found I have gained a better understanding of linkages in GOd's journey with people through OT. Through it all I am feeling a deeper hope growing in my Spirit and expressed in my life. Really appreciating the Practice activities at close of each session. They are challenging me to think deeply about what I'm learning , be able to articulate it, and apply it in my life. Not that I've gained all that yet but I press on. (Sound a bit like Paul :-) Thankyou Professor Wright.

This course skilfully brings together all the strands of Prof. Wright’s other Udemy courses under the 'God of Hope' banner in a wonderful and riveting way. Once I started, I didn’t want to stop! The teaching blends scripture with history in a way that draws your faith deeper into the story God has been telling in the Bible and anchors it in hope. I found myself ‘surprised’ at times, just as the course title says. As a Pastor, I have already used some of Prof. Wright’s insights to teach my own congregation and recommend this is a course every Pastor or Preacher should take - you will be surprised by the God of hope!

When writers are said to have written their best, most important (and often greatest) book, they call it a Magnum Opus. Professor Wright (in collaboration with "The Wisconsin Center of Christian Study) has now also released a Magnum Opus in the Bible Courses category. Until now off course, there will follow, God given, many more. If you really want to know what it means to meet the God of Hope, and find out how you can be one of His image bearers, taking this course is a huge step in the right direction.

I have taken most of Dr. Wright's online courses, and this one is my favorite! It covers and knits together such a wide breadth of the major themes in Scripture. So comprehensible and answers the main questions I've heard over the 30 years I've been a Christian regarding resurrection, hell, and life after death. If I could only recommend one course, it is this one. A true gem!

If you think Christianity is all about avoiding hell and getting into heaven, you need this course. If you think Christianity is all about creating heaven on earth, you need this course. If you're so heavenly minded you're no earthly good, or if you think all talk of the afterlife in the Bible is just metaphor for the utopia we're supposed to be constructing...you need this course! Did you know there's life after "life after death"? Do you have questions about the "rapture"? What about the "sacraments"? How does baptism, the Lord's Supper, creation and the New Jerusalem all combine in a cohesive story that unifies everything in the Bible? In previous courses the Professor has discussed some of this content and theory, but here is his most comprehensive and integrated effort to date supporting his biblically-based vision of New Creation and the marriage of Heaven and Earth, apologies to Wm. Blake aside. Church...it's time you shook off your Platonic shackles and reinvigorate your first-century inheritance. That way lies the renewing of the mind we all need.
