Course Description
Ever wondered what Test-Driven Development (TDD) truly is? Dive in as we demystify this powerful approach through a hands-on coding challenge.
We'll delve into the world of unit tests, uncovering their role in solving complex tasks in digestible chunks.
Join us as we construct a 'Game of Life' simulation with a twist: writing unit tests comes first.
We'll use Jest to create these tests, piecing together our project in achievable steps until we bring it to life within a browser. Experience the pragmatism of TDD and unit testing firsthand, navigating this course as our co-driver.
Keep in mind that our approach may not cater to all tastes; we encourage you to explore a few free videos to see if we're a match. Our focus is pure, unadulterated JavaScript - no React, no frameworks. We value your satisfaction, and would rather offer a refund than have you leave unsatisfied.
Many believe TDD to be a complex maze, but we're here to show you its simplicity and elegance! Our course outline? We start with an end goal, like 'construct a Game of Life', then atomise it into manageable tasks. If you've worked in a software company, you'd recognise these as user stories. For every selected task, we'll ask: "What tests would prove that this task functions as expected?" Then, the journey unfolds:
Dissect the task and enumerate the tests required for a 'Done' stamp
Heed Kent Beck's advice - "start small or not at all", by writing the simplest test and corresponding code to pass
Stub out dependencies
Gradually transition constants to variables, moving from specific to generic
Excited? Let's turn complexity into simplicity, one test at a time!

I have been passionate about programming since my first computer course instructor showed me how to convert numbers to binary, hexadecimal, and octal. I completed my Batchelors degree in 2003. I then went on to work for companies such as BBC WW, LBi, AKQA, Yell, Macmillan English Campus, DK/Penguin (Idiotsguides), and the Home Office.

Great material. My only suggestion is to increase the tone of your voice a little, in some videos it is difficult to hear.

Great course if you want to learn about the TDD process!

The course was a good intro to learn how to do the tests, then write the code and refactor, however there was not much of an explanation regarding the philosophy behind TDD. The game was tested and created using two files side by side. Hard to follow because most of the functions were cut by the width of the available screen. I had hard time coding along and trying to read the code. The intention was good in order to show both the game.js and the game.spec.js files. I am using a 15" computer and both files using VSCode can be displayed perfectly. Other than that, the course was a good intro to TDD

A lot of information and nice to see and follow somebody's process, but definitely requires quite some know-how of javascript and a good feel for TDD workflow

The instruction was pretty disjointed and very stream-of-consciousness. This needs to be polished and explained further to give the student an understanding of what the instructor is thinking and why. Otherwise, a pretty decent course as an introduction.

I think it could have shown a little bit more of the Jest framework itself. Most of the comparisons are `toEqual` and the only interesting bit is how to handle `setInterval`. It might be that the chosen example doesn't allow you to explore more of jest. But it shows the concepts of Test Driven, which is okay.

Excellent job teaching strong fundamentals of TDD with Jest.

This is a reasonably good course. It seems to be a bit rough without chapter lead in or summaries. The content is good ... could be broken out more.

Excellent content and explained very well, with good walk through. Highly recommended.
