Mike McRoberts
Mike McRoberts is the author of the best selling Arduino book 'Beginning Arduino' now in its 2nd edition. He is the 2018 winner of the Raspberry Pi robotics competition held at Cambridge University in England each year and he also runs Medway makers, which is a small maker group in the Medway area of the UK.
Known as TheArduinoGuy on Twitter and elsewhere, Mike has been programming Arduinos for well over 10 years now. Mike discovered the Arduino when he was looking to build a cloud sensor to help with his hobby of astrophotography. In researching the various techniques possible to detect levels of cloud coverage he came across thermopile sensors and needed a way to take readings from one and send it to a laptop. This is when Mike discovered the Arduino and has never looked back since.
Mike has ran hundreds of Arduino and Raspberry Pi workshops at various places around the UK and has built countless devices using Arduino, ESP8266, ESp32 and Raspberry Pis, as well as other microcontrollers. He has well over 10 years experience in building projects using Arduino's both for personal use, collaboration with other people's projects and also for commerical products.

Yes, good for me. I have tried several udemy courses, but I have difficulty in understanding some of the narrative of the courses, maybe due to the English or that the tutor talks too fast. I understand I can turn this speed down, but it still makes it difficult to comprehend. The course content moves along at a nice pace,

I would give this course a 10 based on the content as it was super! The authoring of the Udemy platform seemed to be a bit shaky at times. Many instances of the audio being very faint so I turn it up only to be blasted out the next lesson. The lessons also seemed to take way too long to start...don't know why that is because it has not been an issue in any of the many other courses I've taken here. I certainly appreciated the errors that were left in the video and the way you went back and corrected them...nice to see a human on the other side too. Thanks! I enjoyed the course immensely with reservations for the platform authoring issues.

Brilliant so far. It's been 16 years since I left school and still I am able to understand and follow each lesson. You have done a very good job simplifying things and making it easier to understand. The only criticism I have is the Binary Code lessons. I managed to grasp an understanding of how Binary worked but had to search online to find better explanations/visuals, but this critic isn't the sharpest tool in the shed! :-)

So far I'm OK - I have no electronics experience at all. Everything is totally new to me - I'm going to try & stick with it. The above comments were written about a year ago. I have continued to look at other tutorials - but always end up coming back to Mike McRoberts' course for a clear description. Therefore, I've upgraded my original 4 stars to a full 5 star rating. Going back over some of the lectures that I found difficult to understand is really helping me write Arduino code for my own projects. 100% recommend every single bit (& byte) of Mike's course. Mike, please make a follow-up course.

While there are a couple of errors in the coding for Lesson 31 that were not corrected in the 2025 revision, Mike does a great job of explaining his coding while he is developing the completed sketches. It makes it easy to follow his logic, and he reinforces concepts that were presented in earlier lessons.

I enjoyed taking this course. It was very much what I excepted. I have a back ground in electronics and have done some assembly programing for the PIC and 8051 but now I am retired. I always wanted to tinker with the “newer” 8 bit processors using C so this course was right up my alley. I done most all the course content and wired tested all of your demo circuits with resource programs. Two resource sketches had compiler errors ,47. Using Real Time Clock (RTC) modules and 48. Let's make a clock. Both the programs were having the same issuei”RTC.squareWave(DS3232RTC::SQWAVE_1_HZ);. I corrected both programs and added a wire, now they work. By the way the Resource sketch did coincide with the lectures.

The course it self is good, but the audio is really low in some part that i have to put max volume and use headphones in a quiet room ( and still have difficulties understanding). The subtitles are cheap, and the teacher often do syntax error while writing code. About the syntax error i have to say that his arduino IDE version is the worst version ever seen ( like programming on a .txt file without autocompletion and code suggestion ) so it's not easy to avoid syntax error, but a few more editing should have been done in post production, in my opinion. And, again, the audio is a big issue sometimes. After all this "non technical problems", again, the course itself is good. I'll update this review in case of news.

Only just watched the introduction, even though I’m not a beginner, the content has taught me things I didn’t know. Eager to move onto more advanced content, but as instructed I’m not skipping any module just incase I miss anything important. A great start for any beginner, I’ll know later if it right for intermediate level…

Gracias Mike!

What a great course! I've tried other Arduino courses and found them dull and difficult to follow. This course is so nice and clear and the tutor gets straight to the point. I was able to follow along easily and understood a few things that I had struggled with previously. Highly recommended!
