This is a short, focused introduction to Sass and SCSS from Joe Parys, co-taught with Peter Sommerhoff. The syllabus shows about four hours across 41 lectures and 15 brief sections: variables, partials, mixins, imports, media queries, operators, functions, inheritance, conditionals and loops. It assumes basic HTML and CSS and nothing else. Quizzes follow most topics, and more than 30,000 students have enrolled. Despite the word "Advanced" in the title, it reads as a solid beginner course.

Reviewers like the clear explanations and the logical way the examples build. One says it leaves a good feeling of understanding the main features. The complaints are about age. The course was last updated in May 2016, and several reviewers point out that the Ruby-based Sass it uses is deprecated, as are the Susy and Compass frameworks in the final section, while Breakpoint looks unmaintained. The recommended Sublime Text editor also draws grumbles, since it is paid and reviewers would rather see a free one such as VS Code. One reviewer says lists and maps are missing.

The ratings are still good, with 4.4 stars from 5,268 ratings and most of them four or five stars. The teaching holds up, but the tooling does not. Newcomers should use Dart Sass, as one reviewer advises, skip the frameworks section, and lean on the official Sass documentation for anything deeper. Used that way, it is a quick way to grasp the core concepts. Anyone wanting a modern setup or real depth should look elsewhere.

A very interesting and enjoyable course BUT it really needs some updating. For instance, Ruby-based Sass has been deprecated has been deprecated since March 2019 and the Sass frameworks Susy and Compass are also deprecated, while Breakpoint doesn't seem to have been updated since about 2015. Some of the recommended add-ons for Sublime Text are now deprecated. and don't work as expected. I also thought that the choice of a quite expensive editor, Sublime Text, rather than one of the excellent free ones, such as Visual Studio Code, was a mistake. One can follow along using another editor, but it just makes thing that little bit more difficult. Otherwise, it is a really great course.

I only know CSS. I have 20 years IT experience and 13 years web development experience. Lately my development work has been more backend and I'm not up on the latest developments. I heard about SASS and SCSS and wanted to learn them. I did not realise that they are related. I thought they were completely separate. This has been an excellent course so far explaining what SASS and SCSS are and how they differ.

This was a great introduction and overview for me regarding Sass and scss. I have built several websites in the past using just regular HTML, CSS3, and PHP. Building websites has always been more of a hobby for me, and I had hired a professional to design my primary business's website (for my law office at rhdefense.com). But that developer disappeared, for some reason, leaving behind (among other things) a bunch of scss files. And that's when I realized that to modify my site, I probably need to understand scss.
I would have given this course a full 5-stars, but there were parts where I felt the discussion for Mac users like myself could have been fleshed out more. All the installation demos, for example, apply only to Windows, with just a comment about OSX and Linux (i.e., no demo).
Overall, I think this is one of the more useful courses I have taken here at Udemy. It is among the first that I have actually completed.
