Course Description

How do we know that Jesus was actually raised from the dead in bodily form? This course with Prof. N.T. Wright, The Resurrection of the Son of God, examines the extraordinary claim that Jesus of Nazareth was raised from the dead in a bodily fashion to appear in person to people after his cruel death, crucifixion, and entombment. This journey will look at the ancient world's understanding of the afterlife from Jewish and Greek perspectives along with the implications of their understandings as it relates to the early Christian claim of the bodily resurrection of Jesus. New Testament documents will then be examined for broader understanding of resurrection generally as well as for specific information as it relates to the claim that Jesus was raised from the dead in bodily form.

The student is urged to read the book Surprised by Hope by Prof. N.T. Wright (ISBN: 0061551821) published by HarperOne. This book is a powerful partner to have while working through this course. If you would like a very thorough scholarly work on the subject by Prof. Wright, you may wish to consult the book The Resurrection of the Son of God (ISBN:0800626796) published by Fortress Press.

The course The Resurrection of the Son of God takes advantage of the thorough scholarship of Professor N.T. Wright as he methodically works through the relevant material.

Prof Wright brings the story of our Creator and His good creation into sharp focus by his very accessible exposition of the key Biblical texts linked to the astounding reality of our risen Lord and the resurrection ground on which the body of Christ stands. He does it in ways that challenge the church language I grew up with, and simultaneously fill me with awe and wonder and a richly deepened renewed sense of vocation. Thank you Prof Wright and the team at the Wisconsin Centre for Christian Studies for this treasure. Praise and glory to our great God!

I learned much about Jesus' resurrection and its significance for the early Christian church and now for us. The resurrection launches the new creation and is, in itself, the first fruit/evidence of the new creation was an excellent insight to take away. Also significant was the discussion on how early did the Christian community embrace the resurrection and weave its worldview around this new reality. Further, I loved the term trans-physical and the idea of how our lives today need to reflect our faith in life after life-after-death. The quizzes were beneficial. I hope to learn more from you. Thank you very much!

One thing that really resonated for me was hearing the difference between people being raised from the dead and Jesus' resurrection. While people raised from the dead reentered life in the same corruptible body and eventually died (again), Jesus was given an incorruptible body that is eternal. And Paul says that will happen to all of us when Christ returns to earth. Another crucial point is that resurrection is life after life after death. It is not the same thing as going to heaven after we die. Sad to say, we don't hear any of this in church, even on Easter Sunday. Resurrection is the heart of our faith, and we need to truly understand what we say we believe. Thank you!

I found the course well integrated with Prof. Wright's book "Surprised by Hope" and helpful in illustrating some of the concepts he put forth in the book. (I also have read his "The Resurrection of the Son of God," to which I could refer for more background as needed.) I highly recommend this course to everyone who wants a more accurate vision of the long purposes of God and how we humans fit into that picture.

This is a significant piece in the completion of my personal jigsaw concerning Christianity and my belief. I believe the Prof. Wright will bring his usual erudition and knowledge to the subject and help me understand even those elements I have yet to realise. Now, having completed the course I am, as usual in awe at Prof. Wright’s gift for interpretation and presentation of scriptural text. He is the best theologian I have ever listened to. Great text, great production, great organisation, great course!

This course has given me questions to challenge my knowledge of the passages used, and to present different ways to consider what the author of the particular passage might be trying to tell us. It has also helped in my preaching to my small, well educated (in Bible and Church) as well as in their own work expertise. They appreciate the nudge the regular reading of scripture and worship of the service, but a challenge helps their spiritual growth and ministry.

Living for the kingdom is the main thing I learned. It is so different from the preaching of individual salvation which predominates what I have been taught. My brain is still reeling from the Acts lecture and the implications of new creation breaking into the present evil age. Last night in Las Vagus the largest mass murder in my country occurred. Will evil keep increasing until Christ appears? If yes, is it because we as Christ's agents are letting him down?

I appreciated the dynamic given to the scripture readings that resulted from the explanation of greek terms (e.g. 1 Cor 15:44); and also the very much down-to-earth presentation of the word "heaven"

Great course ... just ended to quickly. Not really, just did not want it to end. You have put together great content with a very user friendly format. Thanks much and I look forward to future opportunities.

Having read Dr. Wright's books and listened to him on many occasions I already know his amazing way of being God's vessel for our time. What a joy it has been to sit at the feet of Rabbi Tom as he shares so wonderfully the message of the Resurrection of Jesus and what that means not only for the future but more importantly what that means for the life of the Church and disciples of Jesus in the present. Tom has enabled me to be able to pull together the bits and pieces of God's New Creation in such a way that for the first time I now see a more clearer picture of God's Beautiful Story of rescue, redemption and restoration. Thank-you!
