Understanding Node.js: Core Concepts (Udemy.com)

Understanding Node.js without any other NPM packages. Let's take your back-end engineering skills to the next level!

Created by: Joseph Heidari

Last updated February 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 2,039 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a Node.js course that barely touches the usual npm ecosystem. It works through Node's own modules and the computer science underneath them: buffers, the file system, streams, networking, HTTP, Unix, compression, multi-threading and cryptography. It runs about 77 hours across 232 lectures and 13 sections, and was last updated in February 2026. It suits developers who already write JavaScript and want to know what happens under the framework, not people hunting for a quick route to a first web app.

Reviewers keep coming back to depth. Several say it goes really deep, and one says they have not seen another course go this far. Joseph Heidari's teaching gets credit for making hard material simple and for obvious enthusiasm. One reviewer calls it overwhelming at times, and one 1-star reviewer found it repetitive, with the instructor jumping back and forth too much. A non-native English speaker said the subtitles were hard to read. Those complaints are a small slice: 1,569 of 2,039 ratings are five stars, and 37 are one or two stars.

The sections vary a lot in size. Unix, multi-threading and cryptography each run over ten hours, so this is a long commitment, and the syllabus lists one quiz and no coding exercises. Expect to follow along and build on your own. The cryptography section also needs some basic discrete math. If you want a course on Express or another framework, look elsewhere. If you want the layer beneath them, this is a strong pick, and 15,845 students have already joined.

Best forJavaScript developers who already use Node but want to understand the buffers, streams, TCP and threads underneath.
Skip it ifYou want to build an Express app or learn a framework quickly, with coding exercises along the way.

Pros

  • Goes deep into Node and computer science topics; one reviewer has not seen another course this deep
  • Reviewers praise the instructor's enthusiasm and way of making things simple to understand
  • Covers Unix, multi-threading, compression and cryptography alongside Node itself
  • Updated in February 2026 and rated 4.7 from over 2,000 reviews

Cons

  • Some reviewers find it overwhelming, repetitive or jumpy in places
  • The syllabus lists one quiz and no coding exercises, so practice is on the student
  • Needs solid JavaScript, and the cryptography section wants basic discrete math
This course is just great! I haven't seen any other course going this deep into the concept and that is what makes it great and unique.
Erfan Ebrahimi Bazaz, a student

Best for developers with a year of coding and solid JavaScript, despite the All Levels label.

Course Description

Welcome to the most comprehensive Node.js course on the internet!

In this course, we're going to do a deep dive into Node.js itself without cluttering our minds with other tools and NPM packages and truly master this powerful technology.

This course is heavily focused on computer science topics and fundamentals that are crucial to understand for becoming a great back-end engineer. You can only properly understand Node.js and unlock its full power if you understand these other computer science topics. So that's why we will also learn these other vital topics so that you can truly master Node.js and take your back-end engineering skills to a whole new level.

We will also use all these vital concepts that we'll learn in practice by building various exciting projects just using Node.js.

This is an intense course for people who want to get to the top of the field and get to a level of driving innovation and making an impact within the industry instead of just scratching the surface and following a few software trends and tools.

Each section of the course is like its own mini-course, and by completing each section, you'll learn some essential Node.js, computer science and back-end engineering concepts that will help you not just if you want to use Node.js but throughout your whole career as a software engineer. These things will stay with you for years and decades to come.

Let's do a quick walkthrough about what you will accomplish after completing some of the sections:

Understanding Buffers: Here, we will deeply understand buffers and how to work directly with binary data, which is essential for all the other sections.

Understanding File System: As a back-end developer, you'll work with files a lot, be it saving some data to disk, handling file uploads and many other examples, so it's essential to have a good understanding of them, which you'll gain after completing this section. We'll also learn how Node.js deals with files and master the "fs" module.

Understanding Streams: In this section, we're going to master Streams, which will allow us to develop highly-performant apps capable of handling terabytes of data with ease while having great memory usage. We'll build many mini-projects throughout the section, including an encryption-decryption app from scratch that could encrypt terabytes of data by directly modifying the binary data. This section lays the foundation for future sections where we'll utilize Streams heavily to create powerful and efficient network applications.

Understanding Networking: Node.js was primarily designed to create network applications, so it's of utmost importance that we gain a decent understanding of networking, which we will do after completing this section. Here's a list of items we'll learn in this section:

  • What exactly a network is

  • How the internet works

  • Mac Addresses

  • IPV4 & IPv6 Addresses

  • TCP

  • UDP

  • DNS

  • Fundamentals of deployment

We'll build 2 low-level apps using only Node.js, a chat and a file uploader app directly on top of TCP! And then, we'll deploy them to a Linux server in the most basic way without using unnecessary tools.

We'll see exactly what happens in our network card, every single 0s and 1s exchanged for a particular thing using Wireshark, and gain a much better understanding of networking and how most of the well-known protocols like HTTP, FTP, Email protocols, SSH, DNS and many others work. This section will broaden your horizons, and you'll realize that there are far more things that you can do with Node.js than just creating web servers.

Understanding HTTP: In this section, we'll utilize and combine all that we've learned from previous sections and finally deeply understand HTTP once and for all! We won't be learning how to use Express; instead, we will build something similar ourselves!

We'll start by understanding the most important HTTP concepts, such as connection types, client-server model, messages, requests, responses, HTTP Methods, status codes, mime types, necessary headers and so much more. And then emulate an HTTP protocol directly on top of TCP using the net module and see precisely every single 0s and 1s that get exchanged for an HTTP request and response interaction!

Once we understand the fundamentals of HTTP and the "http" module, we'll take things to the next level and start building our framework. And then, using our framework, we'll make a fully functional web application.

This section will take your web development skills to the next level. You'll have a much better understanding of how all these popular NPM packages, like Express, body-parser, Multer, cors, etc., that are built on top of the "http" module work. Well, you'll learn how to make them from scratch, just using them will not be that much of a problem!

Update February 2024 - New Module Is Out! Understanding Unix:

With over 15 hours of comprehensive new content, get ready to learn how you can harness the power of multiple technologies and programming languages together with Node.js to create extraordinarily powerful applications!

Unix, one of the most influential inventions ever in the software industry, is crucial for software engineers to understand. In this module, we'll delve deep into some of the key concepts such as Bash, Shells, IPC, Data Streams, Process Management, Clustering, even some C and much more.

We will also understand these Node.js modules:

  • Child Processes

  • Cluster

  • Process

  • Path

  • Console

  • OS

All these Unix concepts that you'll learn in this section instantly apply to many other programming languages. You'll gain a foundation that you can keep building on to create much higher-quality applications than ever before.

At the end of the section, we'll develop a video editing web application with Node.js without using other NPM packages. And this is just the beginning! You'll be able to do much more than this once you're done with the section and see many new possibilities that you never thought about before.

Update May 2024 - New Module Is Out! Understanding Compression:

In this section, we will explore the fascinating world of compression. Understanding compression is crucial for reducing the size of your data, and one important use case is to enhance the speed of your network applications. We'll dive into the Node.js Zlib module and see how it is possible to reduce the number of bits needed to store and transfer your data without losing any information!

This is a true blessing for a developer, to get the correct intuitions of what a programming language is. And how it is built upon structures and structures. The reveal everything "beyond the veil". This instructor is legendary, I hope there will be much much more courses like this

By Manuel Nunez on 7/5/2026

At this point, I am familiar with everything he has been discussing. However, looking back, it took a significant amount of time to learn and connect all of these concepts. Having a guide like this from the beginning would have saved a great deal of time and helped accelerate the learning curve.

By Youssouf Sidibe on 5/29/2026

this is a good course but I don't really understand English so I use subtitles but it's not easy to read it

By Minh Cong Hoang on 2/13/2026

In this era of AI, we have truly realized the importance of problem-solving thinking and the fundamental knowledge that Joseph has provided. We are very much looking forward to a course on system design and database design implemented with FastAPI by senior backend engineer Joseph. Thank you very much, Joseph

By Anonymized User on 1/29/2026

very great course and instructor, if you truly want to understand node.js under the hood i recommend this course, i hate the term "Black Box / Magic Box" when you give an input and get an output without knowing what happened in between, this course clarify everything for you and deep dive into computer since basics.

By Attabiyya a Feline on 1/26/2026

As a beginner with no IT or networking engineering training who wants to start learning programming, this course content is exactly what I need. I wish I had taken this course a year earlier; it would have saved me a lot of time figuring things out without any direction. Thank you.

By Anonymized User on 12/26/2025

This is a very in-depth Node.js course that starts from the absolute basics, even covering binary code fundamentals. The author explains things in great detail and often repeats the same concepts multiple times. This is both a strength and a weakness: repetition helps with understanding, but it can also become tiring and significantly extends the course length (around 70 hours). Many videos include real mistakes and live debugging. On the one hand, this is valuable because you learn how to debug together with the author. On the other hand, it takes a lot of time, and some of these debugging parts could have been cut to make the course shorter and more focused. Despite these drawbacks, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the author. The course covers a huge range of topics: from 0 and 1, buffers and streams, all the way to threads and cryptography. The section where you build your own “Express-like” framework is especially great — it really helps you understand how many things work under the hood in Node.js. Overall, a very valuable and educational course.

By Tim Cisneros on 12/17/2025

I have taken a lot of courses on Udemy. While there are a ton of great courses on the platform, I have to say this is THE best course I've ever taken on here. Joseph has a gift for teaching and breaking down complicated concepts into easy to understand segments that build upon one another. The structure, pace, and amount of good information available in this course is unmatched and I would easily pay 10 times the amount for it. It's that good. God bless you Joseph, and I wish you the best in your future career.

By Rishab Gupta on 12/2/2025

This is exactly what I was looking for. To clear my computer science basics. I love how this course goes deep into each of the modules and explains it in great detail. I am especially excited about the Unix section, and is exactly the kind of fundamentals I wanted to get comfortable with. Thank you, totally worth it.

By Anonymized User on 9/28/2025

understand the fundamentals. yeah, that is true. giving clear explanation at the kernel viewpoint is not that easy. thanks, teacher, keep going! a lot of people are just normal application programmers. they use framework and libraries to speed up the development process, even using AI, AI definitely takes their jobs away. the underlying stuff is not that easy though.
