Course Description

Test Driven Development is a key discipline every software developer should practice to ensure the quality of their code.  In this course I'll show you how to use this discipline in your everyday coding practices to help ensure the quality of your code base.

  • In this course we’ll be going over:

    • What is Unit Testing and Test Driven Development and how does it help you.

    • What is the PyTest testing library and how is it used for writing unit tests in Python.

    • How to setup some common Python development environments to use PyTest.

    • What are Test Doubles and how do you implement and use them with unittest.mock.

    • What are some Best Practices for unit testing and Test Driven Development.

    • We’ll also walk through some hands on example programming sessions using TDD in Python.

New to the TDD approach of coding, I felt supported in getting to know the ideas behind TDD and how to use it in code. The complexity gradually increased with every next lesson. This worked fine for me. It disheartens me when I loss the reasoning behind the lecture content. That was absent in this course. What would have made the course excellent for me would have been using the TDD principles fully in the Supermarkt Checkout Kata. I can understand that at some point some progress in the course is needed. On the other hand: using the RED, GREEN, REFACTOR cycle strictly could have perfectly been shown within the class methods of the Checkout class for calculating and using the product discounts. During the course, the code for that was passed in rather quick with little interaction. It is code that is easy gets an error due to the various if-then cases. TDD is promoted as just the way of working that helps finding and preventing errors in the code. Also clear, comprehensable named tests are promoted as documentation on the working and intention of the code. In addition to that, later on in the course during the part of the use of the Mock framework the Checkout Kata could be expanded with reading in the items data from file. Showing how it is first tested with Mock and MagicMock and than finally really implementing the reading of the items data. To me that would have been a course flow that would have given me an even stronger understanding and knowledge on TDD.

If you want to learn about the basics of test driven development and pytest tips and tricks that I was not aware of. The instructor was very knowledgeable, very clear in what he was explaining. The course was well outlined by first teaching us the concept of TDD and pytest, and finally walking us through an example to apply all the concepts we have learned.

I started this course a long time ago, just before being involved in a new project without any testing skills. 5 years have passed since then, as I figured out I didn't finish this course officially, so now I'm here for this reply. The course helped me a lot to dive into the main concepts quite quickly and deal with the project I was engaged in. As I joined the team, I surprisingly found out that more experienced developers aren't aware of basic testing concepts like parametrization, scopes, etc. that are revealed in this course. Even though the course is pretty old, it still sheds light on everything you need to hop into testing your software in the shortest period of time.

By doing this course I got well acquainted with the aspect of test-driven development and got a good understanding about testing standards in python using unittest and pytest. Overall, a good course that helps us gain good knowledge and understanding on the aspect of test-driven development TDD.

An excellent introductory course and a perfect place to start your journey in unittesting with python. In addition, it sets the mindset on TDD in a very explanatory way! However it is not a complete guide! I would expect more examples and exercises on TDD concept and a deeper dive in mock and monkeypatch with a larger variety of examples (e.g. API calls, DB calls)!

This was good, but not great. If you're disciplined and keep pausing to either code along or try code ahead of him, you can learn a lot. I did! But it's not as polished as some of of the other lectures that have built-in exercises to do, and the section on Test Doubles, MagicMock, and MonekyPatch is not sufficiently explained. I'll need to find some youtube tutorials to learn those. If you can get this for $12, easily worth it.

Until now (Section 4), the course offers a good amount of information, but I need more use cases. Practical ones. Continuing on "test1" cases with simple asserts or meaningless raises doesn't really help my thought process. I'd like to see one technique paired with one actually good example, and after that a bigger more complex example. Now that I've finished the course, I'm midly satisfied. Having a full in-depth example of another Code Kata at the end of the "slide-like" videos is absolutely necessary to me.

it was good. for people new to unit software testing, coming from an etl and database testing background, the object oriented testing method is still new to me and I could use more detail around that. The processes used in the kata's are good. It's good to see the actual process of iterating and refactoring, and the use of the to-do lists.

Good course - very understandable and clear. I might recommend a little more detail on the Section 6, which I think is a critical section and also a little challenging to get one's heads around. I started programming a long time ago, and then stopped for about a little over 10 years while I did the management thing. I'm back now and TDD is something that I have had to learn since we didn't do it back in the day. Great course though overall

Several other books on TDD just state the idea, but there's never any execution to follow along. I think this helps drive home the point of the Red, Green, Refactor Cycle. I was very satisfied with the course, although I think there could be a more in depth dive into test doubles, I feel like one needs to take this bit, apply it for a month or two, and then go back to that subject in another course or book.
