Course Description
If you're a beginner who is feeling stuck with watercolor painting then this is the course for you. I'll take you through six simple watercolor paintings designed to help you improve your watercolor skills through practice.
As we go along I'll give you tips and advice on color mixing, blending colors wet-in-wet, how to start and build a watercolor painting, creating textures, how to mix black and how to add realistic looking shadows.
Each of the six projects is designed for you to paint along with me but feel free to make each painting your own as you experiment with mixing colours and applying paint. Each painting tutorial builds on the one before it, starting from the most simple and moving to more complex subjects.
Projects include:
1. Leaf Motif - basic wet in wet and wet on dry techniques
2. Seas & Skies - creating a mood with color and technique
3. Headland - create distance in a landscape
4. Green Pear - create the illusion of 3D form
5. Sunset Skies - Blend colors wet in wet and how to mix black
6. Lily - a floral study
This course is suitable for people with basic watercolor experience, or for those with no experience at all if you are willing to dive right in and give it a go! If you have worked with watercolor before you may like to choose which painting you start with. If you are a beginner I recommend starting from the first painting and working through to the last painting.
I hope you'll join me for some relaxing watercolor practice time!

Hi, I'm Emily, I'm an artist and an art teacher. After finishing a Masters of Art & Design I returned to the simple joy of putting pencil to paper and just drawing. Since then drawing has become my passion as both an expressive art form and an enjoyable and mindful practice. In 2017, after 7 years of teaching art at university level I started my own school, The Pencil Room, where I teach drawing and painting classes and workshops. From here I developed The Pencil Room Online, to share my classes in a suitable format for online learning.
My approach to teaching drawing is to give my students the skills to draw anything they choose, rather than teaching the steps to drawing just one type of subject. My focus is on changing the way you look at what you see so that you perceive it in a way that can be translated onto paper. Once you can do this, you can draw anything with time and practice.
I love the simplicity of drawing and I value doodling from the imagination as much as realistic drawing. Art doesn't need to be serious, it can be simple and playful. Making art can be fun, challenging and therapeutic and it can change the way you see the world.
Happy Drawing!
Emily

Wonderful course! The instructor is a gem! She’s knowledgeable, and guides you step by step. I especially like her approach to colour mixing and all the tips and tricks on watercolour. She offers information on how to fix mistakes, and encourages you to experiment and apply what you learn to different paintings. You learn techniques by doing the exercises, and the results are very pretty (I’m quite proud of my pear painting). The progression of difficulty is good and all the exercises are achievable as a complete beginner. I highly recommend the course. If you’re a beginner, this course will give you the confidence to start painting and the knowledge to be successful at it!

I’ve taken other courses from this teacher and have never been disappointed. She explains everything as you go so you can pause and follow along with what she is doing. My finish product have always turned out well. I did enjoy her drawing course more than this one.

I really enjoyed this course. I’ve done a few watercolour tutorial courses in my time but this is the first one where the instructor encourages you to focus on values and tones rather than on copying her every move. In fact Emily encourages you to do your own thing to an extent and reminds you that the photo subjects are inspiration rather than a tool to copy. She gives good advice on how to tackle paintings - the order to approach each stage and techniques which you may consider at each stage. I did enjoy doing my own thing while getting expert instruction along with it. I also loved Emily’s timely reminders that every area should have a different values to prevent them looking flat. It’s the first time I’ve been inspired to actually paint from my own photos. Before this course I’d collect photos but put them away as I had no idea where to start!

The planning in this course is a bit poor. Not only does the presenter work really fast (even for me who has experience in watercolours) but often it is not explained how colours are mixed and I then have to paint and pay close attention to her palet and figure it our myself. Often she plans as she goes along.

I felt the instructor's style and choices for subjects were perfect for a beginner like myself. I liked the way the lessons were structured and broken down into easy to follow steps. The photos were supplied as resources which made following the demos easier. The audio and video quality are excellent. Also the instructor provided helpful and encouraging feedback after I posted my finished paintings. Patient too, because it took me long time to get through the whole course. I have good foundation and confidence to try some work on my own from the photos I have.
