Web Development From Scratch: Learn By Doing For Complete Beginners. HTML And CSS. Code Your First Website In 1 Hour.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 13,866 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2015. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free 71-minute introduction to HTML and CSS, 21 lectures across five short sections, that ends with a single formatted web page. Bradley Berger walks through what a website actually is, a handful of HTML5 tags, basic CSS styling, and then a short section on Dreamweaver. Nearly 250,000 people have enrolled, and the rating breakdown is friendly at 4.3 across almost 14,000 reviews. This is for someone who has never opened a text editor and wants to see a page appear in a browser before committing an evening, let alone a weekend, to the subject.

Reviewers like how the teaching moves step by step and stays plain. One says Berger points out problems and shows the fix rather than just what to type, and singles out the tip about using percentages instead of pixels for max-width. Beginners with zero background call it easy to follow and motivating. The complaints are about depth. A reviewer who already knew HTML 4 says he learned nothing new beyond floats, and that very little CSS was covered. Another wanted more explanation of where code goes and why. One three-star reviewer found the pace rushed and felt the course exists mainly to advertise the instructor's paid ones.

The real catch is age. The content was last updated in 2015, and one of the five sections is spent on Dreamweaver rather than hand-written code. There are no quizzes, exercises, or assignments, so practice is up to you. Next to Build Responsive Real-World Websites with HTML and CSS or Modern HTML & CSS From The Beginning 2.0, this is a warm-up, not a substitute. Take it if a free hour sounds like the right size of commitment, then move on to one of those.

Best forAbsolute beginners who want to see a web page they built in the browser within an hour before spending money on a longer course.
Skip it ifYou know basic HTML already, or you want flexbox and grid; a CSS-fluent reviewer says floats were the only layout covered, and it dates from 2015.

Pros

  • Free and only 71 minutes, so trying it costs nothing but an evening
  • Explains why, not just what: one reviewer cites the max-width in percent rather than pixels tip
  • Step-by-step delivery that complete beginners say kept them motivated
  • Ends with a real page styled with CSS, not a theory lecture

Cons

  • Last updated in 2015, and one of five sections is on Dreamweaver rather than hand-written code
  • Very shallow: one reviewer with prior HTML knowledge learned nothing new, and says CSS is thin
  • No quizzes, exercises, or assignments, and one reviewer felt it doubles as a sales pitch
The teacher explained in nice detail every step along the course. In particular, I found extremely useful whenever he pointed out issues and included the fix to those.
C D, a student

Genuinely for beginners with zero coding background; the requirements list is just eagerness, and that is accurate.

Teaching skills! I really liked how the mentor taught each and every little thing, which is really important in a beginner course. It made me understand well and also the course content is a mandatory to know content. Thanks for providing us with this course!

I did really enjoyed this course. The teacher explained in nice detail every step along the course. In particular, I found extremely useful whenever he pointed out issues and included the fix to those. For instance, the use of max-width in % rather than px. It's simple detail, but it gives you the idea how useful his insights were during the course. I recommend this course to anyone who's just starting. Thanks, Bradley for this course.

Excellent class... I can now confidently tell that I know how to code in Html and knew all the basics about CSS.I am so happy that I found this course on Udemy. If you are a beginner or intermediate this is the best place you can start with. Loved Professor Bradley

The course was good for a beginner I learned a couple of terms but was having some trouble as to where exactly to place some of the codes and why they were being placed where they were. Overall I feel the course was great being that it was free, but would’ve liked it to go more in detail when it comes to explaining things.

I have a good understanding of html 4, some new elements of 5 were introduced I did not know but very little css was covered, I am some what fluet in it and other than floats learned nothing new. Hesitant to buy the advanced course with out knowing what it contains if it is as basic as this course it is f no use to me

It's a good course for beginners. I like the fact that code is readable, formatted and well-explained. I didn't like the general filler text that most beginners courses throw at you. It doesn't make for an easy retention of the subject - mysite.com, lorem ipsum, generic headings, etc. How about a basic webpage about John Cena or about a cactus or about some movie. Teaching in context is very important when you're teaching beginners.

Thanks you for the free course, though it was delivered so fast that shows no interest on the instructor other than to sell his other courses. With such a frustrating learning experience I wouldn't enroll on his promoted courses.

Presentation of HTML/CSS and examples were relevant and enjoyable to watch. Lessons taught enough content to comprehend but not overwhelm. Instructor did a great job explaining concepts, linking them together, and encouraging us to learn by doing our own coding. The audio pace and voice were perfect to understand. I highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to learn HTML and CSS!

I have wasted a lot of money on web design courses, which left me bored, confused and I just gave up and tried things on my own. That's why I tried this free intro course and I am happy I did. Everything just fell into place; it got my creative juices going and I am now keen to move ahead with a more adv web dev course. Good job! The pace was a little fast for me, a lot of pausing, had to review to get my floaters right, (I omitted a semi-colon!) It turned out great in the end. The instructor knows his stuff.
