Course Description

Are you tired of manually copying and pasting values in a spreadsheet?

Do you want to learn how to obtain interesting, real-time and even rare information from the internet with a simple script?

Are you eager to acquire a valuable skill to stay ahead of the competition in this data-driven world?

If the answer is yes, then you have come to the right place at the right time!

Welcome to Web Scraping and API Fundamentals in Python!

The definitive course on data collection!

Web Scraping is a technique for obtaining information from web pages or other sources of data, such as APIs, through the use of intelligent automated programs. Web Scraping allows us to gather data from potentially hundreds or thousands of pages with a few lines of code.

From reporting to data science, automating extracting data from the web avoids repetitive work. For example, if you have worked in a serious organization, you certainly know that reporting is a recurring topic. There are daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports. Whether they aim to organize the website data, transactional data, customer data, or even more easy-going information like the weather forecast – reports are indispensable in the current world. And while sometimes it is the intern’s job to take care of that, very few tasks are more cost-saving than the automation of reports.

When it comes to data science – more and more data comes from external sources, like webpages, downloadable files, and APIs. Knowing how to extract and structure that data quickly is an essential skill that will set you apart in the job market.

Yes, it is time to up your game and learn how you can automate the use of APIs and the extraction of useful info from websites.

In the first part of the course, we start with APIs. APIs are specifically designed to provide data to developers, so they are the first place to check when searching for data. We will learn about GET requests, POST requests and the JSON format.

These concepts are all explored through interesting examples and in a straight-to-the-point manner.

Sometimes, however, the information may not be available through the use of an API, but it is contained on a webpage. What can we do in this scenario? Visit the page and write down the data manually?

Please don’t ever do that!

We will learn how to leverage powerful libraries such as ‘Beautiful Soup’ and ‘requests HTML’ to scrape any website out there, no matter what combination of languages are used – HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Certainly, in order to scrape, you’ll need to know a thing or two about web development. That’s why we have also included an optional section that covers the basics of HTML. Consider that a bonus to all the knowledge you will acquire!

We will also explore several scraping projects. We will obtain and structure data about movies from a “Rotten Tomatoes” rank list, examining each step of the process in detail. This will help you develop a feel for what scraping is like in the real world.

We’ll also tackle how to scrape data from many webpages at once, an all-to-common need when it comes to data extraction.

And then it will be your turn to practice what you’ve learned with several projects we'll set out for you.

But there’s even more!

Web Scraping may not always go as planned (after all, that’s why you will be taking this course). Different websites are built in different ways and often our bots may be obstructed. Because of this, we will make an extra effort to explore common roadblocks that you may encounter while scraping and present you with ways to circumnavigate or deal with those problems. These include request headers and cookies, log-in systems and JavaScript generated content.

Don’t worry if you are familiar with few or none of these terms… We will start from the basics and build our way to proficiency. Moreover, we are firm believers that practice makes perfect, so this course is not so much on the theory side of things, as it adopts more of a hands-on approach. What’s more, it contains plenty of homework exercises, downloadable files and notebooks, as well as quiz questions and course notes.

We, the 365 Data Science Team are committed to providing only the highest quality content to you – our students. And while we love creating our content in-house, this time we’ve decided to team up with a true industry expert - Andrew Treadway. Very good content consdering it's an introductory web-scrapping course. I had web-scrapping experience before working with BeautifulSoup and requests library. Still, the course was of a great importance conceptually, explaining client-server applications, apis etc.. highly recommend it for beginners

It was a good overview course. I kind of felt like things were a bit too robotic as far as the instructor going over material. Seems like a robot is teaching you, I kind of feel like it didn't give that human feel of instruction. Information felt speedy at times machine generated. Just would have liked to have more of a human feel on it. Nice course though but lacks personal touch

I am a big fan of 365 videos. But, if you actually are looking for constructive feedback it would be that there is a rushed feeling to the tutorials and it takes less of a hands-on mentality and more of a pedantic tone. Granted the subject matter isn’t necessarily simple but I can’t help but think 365 would do better by adding more personality to the curriculum. Also, I can’t follow along with the very first section Exchange rates API GETting a JSON reply because there was no mention, that I could gather, of accessing an API key. . ?? Nobody has really cornered the market with thorough and specific tutorials. Mostly what you see is from start to finish, zero-to-hero archetypes. Trying to capture a larger demographic I suppose but what I crave for is an extremely thorough walkthrough and analysis of a single interesting project start to finish, bypassing all the fluff and foreplay that typically accompanies coding tutorials. And, skipping ahead, I don’t see as a valid option.

This course was really useful to get the fundamental of web scrapping. What I didn't like was that there weren't files with the answers to the exercises and the instructors haven't responded to many questions related to those exercises. This really surprised me, since I've taken many courses with 365Careers, and they always put a file with the answers.

Highly recommended. I have looked for Web Scraping courses that include requests-HTML and this is the only one that covers such topic. Still, I would liked to have seen an overview of advantages and disadvantages of using requests-HTML vs Beautiful Soup. Or when it is more effective/efficient to use one vs the other. Great course

Difficult anaconda install. Many of the options are different. Every video I watch, the instructor has a different interface you have to download. Got past all the install issues. Need to work up to some of the homework / exercises. I couldn't even get started on the itunes API. Think about breaking it down into smaller chunks and have student work through each chunk, building up to the larger homework. Pretty much everyone should at least be able to start the homework without looking at the solution just to get started. I plan on re-watching from the beginning and trying to use different APIs. I have played around with a couple websites, like etrade. Couldn't get past the first step. Not great.

Explains very well the basics and its good for people with no background in Web Scraping. I would say that really only the last 2-3 lectures are advanced. I was expecting more lectures on posting requests and handling cookies in scraping websites without API's. Could also add how to find elements by Xpath as well. Other than that great course!

By Paul Wilson on 3/29/2020

Superb way of teaching, very simple and straightforward. Learnt a lot so far and I've been using BS4 for several months already, but I certainly don't feel you need prior knowledge. Having reached the end I think this course provides the basics required to at least point you in the right direction but you are *very* far from being an expert. At least you'll know where to start, and that's often enough.

By Kevin Bradley on 3/25/2020

Took this course for more advanced ideas on using bs4 and learning more about requests-html. Though more introductory than I expected. The content was well presented with a good tempo and relevant examples/exercises. Great for a beginner. I would recommend adding more to the js section as it left me ready for more.

As a person who has no previous experience with API, HTML and Web Scraping, I found this course very interesting and informative. Some of the parts need time to digest, and I will definitely go back the course to review again. But as a beginner on this area, I have a hard time to link what I have learnt into real life applications. Yes I can extract all the links or paragraphs or some certain elements of a web page, but what can I do with it? and what is the benefit of scraping a paragraph instead of just copy and paste it? Apparently, apply those tricks requires some sort of creativity, but i think it will be great to give a hint on how to apply those tricks into daily work. The most useful part for me personally is to extract the table (There is a clear benefit of doing this), and i can think of some applications in my daily work. Overall, great course for beginners!
