Working with Design Patterns in Go (Golang) (Udemy.com)

Great lesson per usual from Trevor. Although Trevor stated 10 months ago that "those videos are coming" to complete the final Worker Pool Pattern, thus the lesson section is incomplete, which means I must deduce some star value. That said, he did teach everything needed to implement the logic yourself!

I'm not really sure if this should be aimed at medium level web developers, maybe beginner is more appropriate. The patterns themselves are basic. Things like the factory pattern / abstract factory pattern take up a bit too much time, when they could be done in a few lessons. However, for the patterns that are here, the instructor gives great hands-on instructions so I feel like I will come back to these from time to time. If your aim is to learn Go while doing something less trivial than your average introduction to a language, then this is a bit more fun. As I was a Go beginner and the instructor's voice and instructions were clear, I'll give it a 4. With more patterns it would have probably gotten a 4.5 or better. My favorite section was the pool pattern.

As usual with Trevor, his experience reveals itself in the simplicity of well designed code to transfer the concepts and principles very clear. The student is not distracted with other 'smart' stuff that looks good initially but the value in understanding is lost in the 'black box'. Thank you Trevor for another good course.

Overall, I enjoyed this course and received some good practice implementing patterns in Go. For me, the highlights include Dr. Sawler's general demeanor and presentation style which is welcoming, approachable and gives a "don't worry; we're going to get this done together" attitude. You definitely don't have to be a Go expert to follow along with this course. I found the JSON/XML adapters and the database/API repositories very instructional. And, the worker pool section and its integration into the main project helped to drive home concurrency patterns. By way of feedback, my main concern is that so much time was spent on aspects not related to design patterns, particularly in the UI/JavaScript and in configuring ffmpeg. Having a UI as a demonstration is definitely compelling but perhaps a command-line application could result in more time spent on the patterns and less on presentation. And finally, I yearned for a bit more background on the patterns themselves, with more details on when to pick a certain pattern and why. Despite these points, I would very much recommend this course to anyone interested in exploring design pattern in Go.

The course is decent in the first half, but it doesn't use any good practices. The result is simple, but it's hard to extend and not scalable. The code base is complex for a simple task. I know it's about patterns, but I don't feel like you can grasp all the design patterns the course tries to teach. It just feels weird.

Excellent course! Very clear explanations and easy to follow coding steps. Demonstrates using design patterns in Go by building a single project that uses each design pattern.

Currently, I'm going through very first section of the course and didn't yet start the design pattern section. But I'm enjoying this part right now. Although the same web application building process was described in his previous Modern Web Application Building course, this time he's explaining the same material in more detail. Let me update the review after completing the course.

Trevor always deliver solid content and does a really good job explaining these design patterns developers use that we may not have noticed when working with different paradigms. He applies real world scenarios where these patterns could be applicable. More patterns will be released in this course and will definitely look forward to it.
