What you will learn

  • Create a custom work of art that you can hold in your hand! I will give you information on where to have your parts printed, and can even print and send your part to you myself at a discounted price.
  • Apply the tools and features in SketchUp Make to the creation of 3D CAD models.
  • Create 3D models in an efficient way that will be suitable for printing on a 3D printer.
  • Recognize models that are created with 3D printing in mind and will be able to fix common mistakes found in many STL files.
  • Identify and prevent trouble "overhangs" that keep many 3D models from being printable.
  • Design and build proper support structures to aid in 3D printing.
  • Locate places online and locally where you can print your 3D models.

Course Description

I wish I could convey to you the feeling I get when I hold a physical object in my hand
that was conceived in my mind a few hours prior. Human beings were designed with
an innate desire to create, invent, and solve problems, and 3D printing technology allows us to experience this in an amazingly unique way. Possibly you have witnessed a 3D printer working its magic as it seemingly created something out of nothing. In order for 3D printers to work, there must first be a carefully designed 3D model that the printer can use. In less than four hours, you can become the designer, creating your own quality, custom, print-ready models!

In this course, you will follow along with step-by-step lessons that guide you through
the process of creating print-ready 3D models with the amazing SketchUp Make
software. After teaching many different CAD software packages over the
past 12 years, the SketchUp Make software was chosen for this course because of its ease of use for beginners and its relatively low learning curve. I have had students as young as age 10, as well as adult learners, successfully create complex models in a very short period of time with these free 3D modeling tools. My teaching methods
allow you to explore the use of the tools in a way that you will feel confident in branching out to create your own custom models fast.

After exploring the main drawing tools in SketchUp, you will tackle projects where you create your own customized models such as nameplates, key/luggage tags, and custom USB flash drives. You will learn to identify and avoid problems such as overhangs that cause serious issues with many 3D models, leading to print failure. You will convert your files to the correct format for most 3D printers, and will be given information and advice on where to get your files printed. I'm excited to help you get started with this amazing technology, and can't wait to see the amazing
products you will design!

Jared Murphy

I began my teaching career in 2004 at Foster High School in Richmond, TX where I had the privilege of teaching engineering design and CAD classes. I had 10 amazing years there, where I was nominated for the district Star Tech Teacher award and voted by my peers as Foster's 2012 Teacher of the Year. During my last two years at Foster, I served as Department Chair of the Career and Technical Education department. In 2014 I resigned my position at Foster in order to follow a calling to spend more time with my own family while teaching homeschool families at a STEM facility in Sugar Land. The last two years have been a blessing as I have had the unique opportunity to work with students and parents in the areas of 3D Printing, Engineering Design, and Robotics. During this time I have also been able to serve as a robotics team mentor and coach in both the FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Lego League.

it helped me to learn how to use sketchup effectively for 3d printing. I'm very pleased with the skills learned. Just note, to make sure I didn't have any version issues, I had to find an old copy of sketchup from their website and since sketchup wants you to do everything online, it was a bit hidden...but as google search showed me the link. with that, everything in the tutorial worked, and I was able to print the stuff from the video and a few simple designs on my own.

So far so good. Much better than I could get on the program tutorial. Missed a few things I guess. Will take course again to get more practice. Could not tell how to actually place dimension lines on my model? Overall, very helpful course.

Although I have been using SketchUp for a number of years now, during this course discovered some simple but useful changes that have helped my workflow. My models are now coming out cleaner first time more often. This is the first time I have completed a Udemy course and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Jared, for the hard work you have put into this course. I hope that you will consider launching an intermediate and advanced course in the near future.

I was looking for a good and quick introduction to 3D printing but your course far exceeded my expectation. Thanks for launching me into the 3D printing world with guidance and instruction in setting up the necessary software, practical, clear guided hands-on practice examples of using the software and quick skill acquisition that I will need to move forward, guidance concerning the practical issues of producing the output needed for submission for printing and available service options. A very thorough presentation.

I was very satisfied with the course. I learned enough about SketchUp to start doing some designs. I have already printed couple of designs I made using what I learned. I would strongly recommewnd this course to anyone who wants to learn this software.

Good value for the money. Got me off and running with Sketchup. Easy to follow. Gave me the overview I needed now I can experiment. Clear and concise. If you are new to Sketchup I would highly recommend. Even a 63 senior like me could follow it.

Great course for beginners in 3D printing and Sketchup. Jared's lessons were easy to follow and very informative. I found myself designing some pretty complicated models with just this course alone. I highly recommend it. That being said, I think this course would be more comprehensive if Jared added a few more steps in prepping 3D files for printing - i.e.: converting to solid files, and knowing the differences in print material etc. All of these extra things I had to research on my own and took quite some time.

The instructor is very knowledgeable in the program, but he needs a more professional recording method. There are mouth noises and baby noises and little distracting sounds to try and ignore, otherwise I would give it a 5 star rating. I like the way it is divided tool by tool, it makes it very easy to go back and refresh anything that was forgotten. It's also good he gives options at the end that don't involve having to go out and buy a 3d printer immediately.

This course pointed out a variety of tools I was unaware of in sketchup. I'm looking to mill/print robots parts and sketchup is a great program I've found to create easy prototypes in. I'm confident I can start prototyping parts after taking this course. Thanks for making it available.

By Shayne Pettersen on 5/29/2016

Very clear and great explanations of the basics. Good starting point for sketchup. I really enjoyed the course quick to the point and very easy to understand. I have the convenience to try my own projects in sketchup. Excellent starting point for anyone new to Sketchup.
