Artem Chaika

I'm a professional Unreal Engine gameplay programmer with 7+ years of experience working with UDK/Unreal Engine 4/5/In-house engines on titles like Mortal Combat, Injustice 2, Asphalt 8, Outriders, Decimated and other unannounced ones.

During those years of work I gained knowledge of gameplay programming, especially with Unreal Engine, that I want to share with you. I know from experience how hard it is to find the right info, especially about such a complicated topic, so I hope the knowledge that I will share with you will significantly boost your career or personal projects development!

THANK YOU! Finally a course that doesn't take 500 hours of verbal discussion to explain and detail 5 minutes of code!!! For all the complaints about "too fast" and "not enough explanation" I saw... this is an 'Advanced' course, and barely that to be honest... If you can type at a decent speed and understand how to code even a little... this is BY FAR the best course I've tried on Udemy. If you are questioning all the other complaints on here... just pause the video and take your time... you can always go frame by frame and lookup things you don't understand or want more explanation on... I MUCH prefer this method than having to listen to drawn out explanations that confuse and list 300 different options more than get to the point... all to show "oh my course is 100 hours long it MUST be good!". If you enjoy spending time listening to endless lectures instead of getting to the point, this isn't for you. This guy explains enough, and more importantly SHOWS all you need to get going with UE5 Multiplayer and Gameplay Ability System. No bs. END.

I haven't been able to make my way through a lot of this course, because it's just incredibly difficult to do. I think the teacher is sufficiently knowledgeable but this way of teaching doesn't work me. I have prior experience of UE, C++, and multiplayer in C++ but trying to learn anything from this course is tedious. Putting aside the video issues where there are bits that repeat twice or thrice, there are long periods of coding in silence which could easily be filled with some light explanation, but aren't. I realize this is an advanced course, and I don't expect the instructor to spend time telling us the concepts of how multiplayer works, how replication works, etc., but in a course about GAS, I expect not to have to go back to UE documentation every 2 minutes and spend 10-15 minutes reading up on it just to figure out what and why the instructor just did what they did. I'm about 2 hours in I think, and all I've heard so far is "Lets do this", "now let's add this function here", etc. - never why we need to do this, why did I decide to do this here, etc. There is character class being written and one after the other there's this rapid fire of "now lets add this"...but why? Leave alone explanation it has not been talked about or alluded to WHY we are doing this. As I said earlier, it's just very tedious following this. I don't think the finished project is available on Git, otherwise it would have been at least worth it to have a look at the codebase just to see what practices and approaches were used without having to sit through this.

I think this course has a lot to offer and the lecturer is extremely knowledgeable. However, I don't think that they contextualise the topic of each lecture enough. I'd often find myself, knowing what we wanted to do, but not clear on how we would do it before implementing it and it's relation to the goal. This being said, I think it speaks volumes about the quality of the code when after the lesson is completed it feels scalable, it feels efficient and you can tell the techniques shown very easily open themselves up to cleanliness if you were to stick to 1 code framework, which we didn't do in this course for the purposes of learning, but all the tools are there. It's only that lack of contextualisation that holds it back, which really sucks because when the lecture is over, it becomes SO clear what all the code does and why its there. The information is all there, it just needs to be verbally reaffirmed before, throughout and after much more frequently. Overall good course, lots of extremely useful information, just a couple issues with delivery of information. Would recommend checking out!

I think the course is great to learn GAS. Is an advanced course, I think that is not for beginners, you should know a bit about programming before taking the course and consider that this system and course relies heavily on C++. You should also check the documentation on your own if there are some functions or elements that are used in the implementation and you don't know. Also, the multiplayer part is good, but is not a course about multiplayer, so don't expect to have a project uploaded on Steam or Epic ready to play online. But is a good base and with elements that must be consider if you want to use GAS in online games.

The video's audio editing is messed up, so the English automatic subtitles are messed up. I don't know why the voice editing was cut and edited word by word in the YouTube style. Conclusion: People from non-English speaking countries should not purchase this course. I will change my rating if you attach English subtitles you can understand.

This course was fantastic. It covered lots of topics other courses never touch on. It's a perfect course for someone who has finished a bunch of more beginner courses and wants to advance their skills and dive into something more intermediate and advanced. There are lots of things in here I'd never seen before (Like fast serializing arrays for the inventory & ammo systems). The instructor clearly has lots of hands on experience using Unreal Engine in a commercial environment. Can't wait for more courses from Artem. It's exactly what I was after and I'm sad that its finished.

This is an edited review. I initially gave 3 stars because of the lack of certain explanations but after reaching around 60% of this course I have to say the instructor impressed me with his coding standards and deep knowledge. Thank you for this course. It would have been 5 stars if the course was filled with more explanations. A) it would have made it more enjoyable to follow along, instead of watching code being written in silence B) it would have added something that is missing in UE which is explanations and documentation.

To address some false expectations you may have, I will be starting with a word of caution for those who consider buying this course: Do not buy this course if you are either just starting out UE, or know nothing about multiplayer in UE, or don't know UE C++ enough. Notice the "Advanced" on the title, because it is an advanced course indeed. Instructor assumes you already can navigate the Editor with ease, create and edit classes, know most of UE C++ conventions, and have a good grasp on general UE architecture and game framework classes. That means, if you have not played around UE end-to-end for quite some time, simply coming over from C# (or even STL C++) won't help you. On the other hand, that does not mean that you shouldn't buy the course if you simply have a little more than average UE knowledge. For example, the instructor assumes you already know what client prediction and autonomous proxies are, but if you don't, you can look it up online, or any other term here and there you might not know yet, and follow the course just fine, but with a little more effort. Now for the course itself: Personally I am more than pleased. First off, it rips apart GAS on both it's practical and conceptual aspects better than any online source I 've seen. In addition, it remarkably covers a broad range of game features (like footstep sounds, inventories, items) and mechanically or conceptually connects them back to GAS, in a very intuitive way. All that, by creating a very neat and organised codebase, which can be used as a reference for a lot of other projects, in my opinion. What might deter some more experienced developers is the slow speed and typing, which can work for some (taking things slow makes them stick better) but for others it could potentially be frustrating. For the second group, I'd say give it a try. The instructor's English are good enough to follow along, and the material is definitely worth it.

Wonderful course on Gameplay Ability System! Artem does an excellent job explaining the concepts of the Gameplay Ability System and gameplay tags. The course is packed with a massive amount of information. Initially, I hesitated to purchase it because I thought it was too short, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much content is included. The final project exceeded my expectations! However, for those who are not familiar with Unreal Engine and C++, please keep in mind that this is a more advanced course. Not every aspect of C++ and Unreal is explained in detail.

I'm past half of the course at the moment, and while it has issues - mostly all the long, and distracting sections of silent coding in VS which is just terrible compared to Rider - this is an actual advanced course, and one that's up to date, which is really rare. Due to this it's really useful even for experienced developers. Also voice quality, and general teaching aptitude of the instructor are both right on. I wish, however, the course covered some more of the new advanced features coming to the UE5 in the Animation department. Scope of the additional materials you've provided for lesson 17 (Lyra's animation) would be really on point.
