Course Description

Hi,

My name is Mustafa Ozcelikors, a Senior Linux & Android Engineer and team leader with more than +9 years of experience working in automotive with Master's Degree in Embedded Systems, who have won Google SOC event in 2017 and who have been actively contributing to open source and commercial projects. I have been using Yocto Project for almost 10 years, dating back to my college years.

"Applied Yocto Project using Raspberry Pi 5 (with Embedded Linux practices)" is an unique Embedded Linux course unlike any other. The course utilizes drawings, slideshows, diagrams, examples, hands-on applications in order for you to visualize every subject in your mind with ease. Course level starts with beginner, but some advanced topics are also explained.

Theoretical subjects are carefully planned and almost for every important subject, multiple block diagrams have been created for better understanding. Almost every figure, schematic, drawing comes from years of experience in the field, not from the internet or from any book. In practical subjects, we take a deep dive in exploring Yocto Project together, and open up a terminal together to achieve things within it.

At the end of the course we together will have a custom Linux distribution with distinct machine configuration, kernel, recipe examples, and Qt application.

You are in this now for the following great content:

  • Understand the core philosophy behind Embedded Linux systems from Introductory to Advanced subjects.

  • Understand why we use Embedded Linux in certain products.

  • Understand how Linux systems and Raspberry Pi 5 boot.

  • Grasp how embedded Linux tasks work (unpack, patch, configure, compile, install, deploy, package).

  • Understand Linux distributions and package managers.

  • Comfortably handle tasks regarding Yocto Project and its configuration with ease.

  • Understand how Raspberry Pi 5 layer and board configuration work in Yocto Project (meta-raspberrypi, hardware specs, serial console).

  • Create your own machine configurations within Yocto Project.

  • Create your own layers for your Linux distribution.

  • Comfortably create new recipes for software packages that use multiple build systems (GCC, GNU Make, CMake, PyPi).

  • Integrate third party software (e.g. GNOME, XFCE, Qt) in Embedded Linux products.

  • Integrate graphical desktop in your Embedded Linux system.

  • Deploy system images to Raspberry Pi 5 and work with secure shells and serial console software.

  • Create patches for existing software packages using DEVTOOL.

  • Understand how to comfortably understand and modify kernel configurations (Kconfig, config fragments).

  • Downgrade and upgrade Linux Kernel version of your embedded Linux distribution.

Thank you very much for your interest! I hope to see you in the first lecture!

Kindly yours,

M.Eng Mustafa Ozcelikors

Instructor Details

Mustafa Ozcelikors

I am a Senior Embedded Software Engineer focusing on Linux/Android with more than +8 years of experience working in automotive domain, who have won Google SOC event in 2017. I have +18 publications in well respected journals and conferences and have been a contributor to several open-source projects before.

I work on creating embedded products/tech demos by customizing high level operating systems such as Android and Linux, dealing with build systems such as Bitbake and Soong, porting open-source software and creating custom software (Native C/C++, Qt, Java). Although I am mainly a platform/software guy, in my projects I do graphics design, animation design, and PCB design to do the complete product by myself.

For a while now I have been creating videos with drawings, block diagrams and hands-on examples on the topics that I am most comfortable on. Visit my Udemy, Youtube, or personal web page for more details on my work.

So far, I have found the tutorial very practical and useful, especially because it focuses on actually setting up and working with Yocto rather than only explaining the theory. The explanations of Poky, BitBake, layers and the overall Yocto workflow are helpful for building a solid foundation. However, some of the setup sections can be slightly confusing for beginners because the instructor's environment contains existing projects, external drives and customized VS Code workspace configurations that aren't necessarily required for learning Yocto. Some Linux/Git commands also assume a certain level of familiarity. It would be even better if the tutorial clearly distinguished between steps that are essential for Yocto and steps that are specific to the instructor's personal development environment. Overall, the hands-on approach is one of the strongest aspects of the course.

Thank you for teh great course! It would be very helpful if you added total required disck space into the course requirements. In my case I needed to free the disk during the bitbake command run in order to succeed.

The course is well-structured and clearly explained. If it had included demonstrations of sample kernel driver module development for I2C and PWM/Timer modules using Yocto, it would have completely covered Embedded Linux.

By Riyal Fernando on 6/14/2025

Great introduction into the yocto build process. Content was clear and easy to digest. Yoctoproject tool was very nice. Some extra content I would have liked to see: - configuring storage partitions - removing/adding drivers from kernel - adding your own custom driver to the kernel for custom hardware (maybe this falls into embedded kernel development to be fair)

By Michal Búzik on 4/19/2025

I appreciate that the lector presents the content in a step-by-step and structured way, which helps with understanding. Just a little improvement is needed in timing and connecting the explanation more smoothly with the actual presentation, as sometimes a wasting gap of time appears.

Your explanation was very clear and helpful. By following the videos, I was able to successfully build my own project using Yocto. The course is well-structured, providing step-by-step guidance that makes even complex topics easy to understand. The practical examples and hands-on approach helped me gain confidence in working with Yocto. Thank you for this excellent course!Thank you for the excellent course! I am currently working on a project where an application interacts with SOME/IP, transmits data via the networking stack, and the receiving application recevies data via some/IP transfers the data to a Qt front end using Qt Creator. I have a request for a lecture: It would be great if you could add a project demonstrating data exchange between an application and the networking stack, where the client runs on a Raspberry Pi and the server runs on QEMU. I can use this as a reference for my project
