Assertive Communication Skills for Business & Social Life. Speak Confidently. Set Boundaries. Difficult conversations.

Created by: Kara Ronin

Last updated April 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 18,627 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Kara Ronin's course is a compact video class on speaking up, saying no and setting boundaries. It runs 3.4 hours across 52 lectures in nine sections, with eight quizzes and some printable worksheets. The syllabus moves from limiting beliefs to group situations, one-on-one talks, body language and then verbal strategies, which is the biggest block at about 67 minutes. The audience list points at new managers, emerging leaders and people who tend to go quiet or get talked over.

Reviewers like how easy it is to watch and how many usable phrases it hands over. One said they started testing the techniques while still working through the course and saw results right away. Another said it changed how they saw their own passive style. The complaints are mostly about delivery. Reviewers found the instructor's high-pitched voice or her habit of walking side to side on screen distracting, and one called the course unsuitable because of both. Others found parts basic, with too many recaps, and one wanted more worked dialogues and practice scenarios.

The numbers are solid: 4.6 stars from 18,627 ratings, about nine in ten of them four or five stars, and 58,510 students. The last update was April 2026, adding five lessons on being assertive in unexpected moments. It is a light time commitment and a good first step if you tend to go quiet at work. If you want deep role-play or already handle difficult conversations, it will feel thin.

Best forNew managers and quiet communicators who want ready-made phrases for saying no and setting boundaries.
Skip it ifYou want long role-play practice, or you already know the basics of assertive communication.

Pros

  • Gives ready-to-use phrases and step-by-step structures for saying no and setting boundaries
  • Short at 3.4 hours, and reviewers call it easy to watch and quick to apply
  • Refreshed in April 2026 with five lessons on staying assertive on the spot
  • Covers groups, one-on-one talks, body language and verbal strategies in nine clear sections

Cons

  • The instructor's high voice and side-to-side walking on screen bother some reviewers
  • A few reviewers find it basic, with too many recaps for the runtime
  • Few worked dialogues or practice scenarios, and one reviewer asked for more
I started testing and implementing the techniques as I progressed through the course, and I got positive results right away.
Zlatko Chavdarovski, a student

Labeled all levels, but it suits beginners and passive communicators best. You only need a printer for the worksheets.

The Assertive Communication Skills Masterclass remains the Bestselling Udemy course for learning how to be more assertive. There’s a reason why.

You CAN tell people what you truly think and feel, and you can set boundaries when you need to. You just need to learn how to communicate assertively to do it effectively.

Assertive communication is a critical skill for emerging leaders, new managers, and people who are more introverted in social situations.

When you know how to communicate assertively, you can say “no” without feeling guilty, set boundaries to protect your time, priorities and goals, articulate requests clearly and confidently, and deal with awkward situations with ease.

Imagine being able to lift the frustration, stress and anxiety you normally feel when you have to stand up for yourself. Imagine life without being a pushover because people respect the boundaries you have set. Imagine people looking at you as a strong, confident person.

All of this is possible and learning how to communicate assertively will help you achieve it.

I’m Kara Ronin, Best-Selling Udemy Instructor and a Udemy Instructor Partner. I established my business, Executive Impressions, in 2012 where I specialise in helping people develop their social skills in business, leadership skill, communication skill, and executive presence.

I’ve helped many of my in-person clients transform their communication and become more assertive, and I’m dedicated to helping you do the same in this video course.

With over 50K students who have already taken this course, here is the most common review I get: "When someone is able to describe situations you can relate to and the way it makes you feel and think it really relates to real life situations. This course does just that, I lost count of the number of times I thought to myself "oh yeah, that makes sense now" - Julian.

Assertive communication is not about being bossy. It’s about taking control of your communication and your life. It allows you to communicate clearly and honestly to people around you. This in turn helps you to come across as more authentic.

In this course, you will learn how to

  • be more assertive,

  • identify your natural communication style and break bad communication habits,

  • overcome your fears about being assertive and speaking up honestly,

  • get heard in chaotic group situations,

  • connect and engage in one-on-one conversations,

  • use body language to use to support your assertive message,

  • set boundaries and say “no” without feeling guilty,

  • express your feelings, opinions and wants honestly and clearly,

  • make clear requests with your friends, family and work colleagues,

  • better manage conflict and difficult conversations,

  • become more confident in your decision-making, and

  • make your job and life less stressful because you know how to protect your time, priorities and goals.

This course has a particular focus on helping passive communicators become more assertive. Having said that, this course will help all types of communicators (passive, passive-aggressive, and aggressive) to learn the fundamentals of assertiveness and help anyone become more assertive at work and at home.

I had to use a pitch-modification app to lower the instructor’s voice, as the very high pitch was quite difficult for me to listen to throughout the course. I suppose that’s one way to make sure you command attention! Other than that, the material is very good. I started testing and implementing the techniques as I progressed through the course, and I got positive results right away. Thanks for the course—I recommend it!

By Sonia Moreno on 7/15/2026

This course really changed the way I used to see my passive way of communication. I learned how to become an assertive person step by step. I'm ready to start practicing my new skills to become a better professional!

Include two-way situational conversations for each example so learners can see how the techniques work in a realistic dialogue. Bold the key words and phrases emphasized in the videos (e.g., I noticed, I feel, I need, I understand your point, however, no) to make them easier to identify and practice. Provide additional real-world examples that demonstrate how to apply assertive communication in both personal and professional situations. Add more practice scenarios so learners can build confidence using the techniques in different contexts.

By Tiffany Joy P. Gonzales on 5/3/2026

This course is very helpful and practical. The strategies are easy to understand and can be applied daily in both personal and professional life. It helped me become more confident in group conversations, speak up without guilt, and handle interruptions calmly and assertively. The techniques made a real difference in how I communicate at work and with others. I highly recommend this course to anyone who struggles with speaking up or holding their talking space.

By Anonymized User on 4/25/2026

By Thandeka Phakathi on 4/20/2026

I don't identify myself as assertive, the course has made me realize that I'm headed there. I appreciate the practical steps and suggested statements given as guidance, and that they are so relatable in both work and personal setting. It's a solid informative short course that I'd highly recommend.

By Prashant Jadhav on 3/24/2026

My experience taking this course has been very good. It was a really helpful for me as it addressed real‑life communication challenges, helped me build assertiveness, and provided practical strategies that I can apply in both professional and personal situations.

By Puneet Khandelwal on 2/19/2026

I liked the course more because the examples included at most places were the most common sort of issues that one in a day to day life. It gives you more sense as to the way you are handling the situation might not be the right way and therefore making you think the alternative responses. Assignment also helps.

By Erick Palacios Moreno on 2/5/2026

The course is complete in describing the styles of communication emphasizing that assertiveness combined with skills of active listening, validating beliefs or comments from others will give us the confidence to raise our opinions and wants with clarity. It gives you steps for different processes such as expressing feelings, opinions and wants that the instructor recommends to use. It has coaching worksheets that can be used for different situations to address distinct topics from preparing a group or 1-1 conversation to evaluating how assertive one is. It has supported me in understanding my behaviors and I have better self knowledge. I believe it's a complete course overall. The instructor is clear, well educated and knows the content by heart. It has a strong, confident voice that keeps your attention focused.
