Course Description

In the past decade, cloud computing has been gaining popularity at a tremendous rate. Some cloud providers are experiencing a growth rate of 50% year over year – which is just astounding. And the reason for this growth is obvious – cloud computing enables ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources which can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal effort.

Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform that offers a broad set of global compute, storage, database, analytics, application, and deployment services that help organizations move faster, lower IT costs, and scale applications.

The Azure Resource Manager, provided by Microsoft Azure, is a versatile service that simplifies how you manage your cloud resources. The Azure Resource Manager can help you define, build and maintain your application in a consistent manner. Within the context of Azure Stack, the Azure Resource Manager is the management layer (API) where you connect to for deploying resources.

With Azure Resource Manager (ARM) you can deploy, delete, or update all resources for your solution in a single and coordinated operation by using templates. The templates are in the form of JSON format, and these templates can be used for deployment in different environments such as staging, testing, and production. The Resource Manager helps in providing auditing, security, and tagging features to help you manage your resources post-deployment.

Although we have the Azure portal for managing the resources but in cases where you need to maintain and deploy multiple servers, in complex configurations - it might get a cumbersome to handle these deployment and configuration activities via the point and click portal. Moreover remembering every resource category and their respective cost evaluation can become a mammoth task.

As companies look forward to automating deployment, scaling, and operations of cloud applications in the Azure cloud (across clusters of hosts), there is a need for providing automated deployment solutions for the cloud infrastructure. With Azure ARM Templates, you can define your infrastructure environment in simple JSON file template. These file templates can be versioned, validated and checked into your source control systems. This is what we call Infrastructure-as-code (IaC).

  • Do you know what it takes to design and deploy sophisticated cloud applications and manage your complex infrastructure via the use of ARM templates?
  • How does one go about automating the configuration of the cloud resources in the Azure cloud environment?
  • How to make the deployment process consistent and repeatable?
  • How to scale the infrastructure with a simple push of a button or a simple command?

These are some of the fundamental problems Cloud and DevOps engineers struggle with on a daily basis.

This course teaches you how to design, deploy, configure and manage your Azure cloud resources with Azure ARM Templates. The course will start with an introduction to the Azure ARM templates and their core features. Then we will dive deeper into designing and deploying our cloud resources with the use of these templates.

If you’re serious about building scalable, flexible and robust Azure ARM Templates for deploying your cloud infrastructure, then this course is for you.

These DevOps and Cloud Computing skills are in high demand, but there’s no easy way to acquire this knowledge. Rather than rely on hit and trial method, this course will provide you with all the information you need to get started with your Azure cloud projects.

Startups and technology companies pay big bucks for experience and skills in these technologies. They demand DevOps and cloud engineers to automate the deployment of their cloud resources  -  and in turn, you can demand top dollar for your abilities.

I am in IT industry for more than 15 years. I work and support Infrastructure related projects. The recent change in IT phenomenon make me learning cloud technologies and more interestingly the code automation. I hope this course will help me what I quest for.

Actually I was at some subjects more advanced, it did clarify some things that are basic and important for designing the templates I need for my job. If I chose a more advanced course explaining more about the structure of arm templates that would be even more appropriate for me as I already developed arm templates before taking this course.

This course, given the MasterClass word in the title of it, misses target a little for me. I had expected less looking at preconfigured templates uploaded to the Azure Portal, but more of this is how you go about creating templates from some sort of base to final Azure environment, might be that I have misunderstood the whole concept of ARM templates, but as shown in this course I can't see the benefit over doing templates instead of clicking in the portal and then saving the setup as a template for backup purposes...

The entire course helped me to understand basic knowledge and understanding of ARM templates and how it is managed both PaaS and Iaas deployment service. Thanks.

There is way too much intro and it takes a while to get to the real class. The class could also use some better QA, some of the quizzes are hard to understand the questions as well as lectures don't always flow well. In reality all this class does is take a pre-existing template form GitHub and how you how it works. All in all though the information is useful once you get to it but not what I was expecting.

Hi there. You did a great job for introducing in Azure Templates and simple using, but it was not a Masterclass in my opinion. These are most basics and I hoped that I could learn more in the depths. Section 4 Deep Dive into Azure ARM Templates was going in the right direction, but after that you missed to use this deep dive informations in the further Sections. Watching 20 times how to upload a Template in the portal and showing it deploy was not what I hoped - why not using PowerShell or the CLI? and only show the results in the Portal. Because this is the Point where ARM Templates becomes really helpful, faster and absolutely cool. With VSCode you have the perfect editor to show so much more! like .azcli Files where you could make a scripted deploy of your hosted Templates (in a Storage Account??) with CLI Scrips. Create full Powershell scripts where you call your Templates. I wanted to see how do I use my templates in real development scenarios and have here some questions that I hoped to find the answer in the course: how do i create a Template from Scratch, what are Tips and tricks by the developing - is it really copy and paste everything? how do i put the source code in a PaaS Web App - is it even possible? How do i need to nest my templates, when does it become useful, and when is it an overkill. what are best practices for storing my templates (everything in storage accounts? or on github?) what functions do I have - I know, there are more than the ones that were covered in the Course. - where do I find them and how do I write my own Functions? - I know this is possible. You used the buzzword "DevOps" in your description. Never in the course. How do I integrate the ARM Templates in my DevOps Pipeline? How do I pass variables from my Pipline Build to the ARM Templates. How do I use Output in my next deployment steps and so on. ARM Templates are so big and I have not the Feeling after this "Masterclass" I could really master the ARM Templates. Sorry.

Explained clearly till now by selecting the prime topic of azure and not mixing up with other courses. Impressed with the explanation skills, but sometimes I felt video is going little bit faster. Overall it's a good one:)

By Raghav Jagan on 10/21/2019

This course is really good for ARM and i gained knowledge on fundamentals. Total Video: 3.5 hours, is actually too long, Section 2, 3, 4 are same, Instructor keeps on repeating the same structure, and instructor says that we are going to deep dive, but I don’t think so. IAAS and PAAS are really good and by taking this course I get knowledge on ARM.

By Robert Johnson on 7/20/2019

Very long winded intro. This class progresses very slowly, constantly reviewing prior material. Four lectures have the same name "Deep Dive Into Arm Templates", which makes it difficult if you want to go back and review some specific topic. PAAS Deployment section disappointing, as mainly showing example scripts and covering little new material. The provided sample scripts are interesting and useful.

By Grzegorz Opara on 8/30/2018

I have found the course pace bit too slow, I understand that for the clarity reasons some parts of the course or information need to be repeated several time, but I think authors has gone bit to far with this and content is repetitive and doesn't bring any value. Overall, the it's very interesting topic, the presenter is well prepared and it clearly explains everything but at the same time the content is too shallow.
